PETA is so over the top! There is something pretty nutty about complaining about what type of dog Obama wants to purchase.
"No one needs to tell you that this country is proud to be a melting pot, and that there is something deeply wrong and elitist about wanting only a purebred dog," Newkirk wrote in the somewhat strange letter.BTW, what is it with the office of president that everyone has to have a dog when they enter the White House?"Millions of Great American Mutts -- the dog that should be our national dog -- are set to die in our nation's extremely overcrowded pounds and shelters for lack of good homes. Every animal purchased from a breeder or a pet shop takes a home away from a needy animal at an animal shelter, waiting and hoping for a chance at the American dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The Obamas have two children. Children have parents. Pets have owners. There is no correlation between the two. We can trace the actual breakdown in American society to the very moment that individuals believed that ownership of pets equated to parenting of children. Wow people, get a clue before you actually hurt yourselves. Think about it, hmmm, two children or a discussion on pet ownership. ... its a no brainer ...
Umm.. the point, Reaganite, of making fun of PETA is that EVERYONE is an elitist to them.
If you own a golden retriever, you're an elitist. So, the bar is lower than usual with PETA, not higher.
Obama to PETA "You don't have enough votes to elect a dog."
"What's creepy is that he doesn't already have a pet. I mean really, what kind of person lives such a rarefied life that they don't even have a cat or a hamster or something?"
I guess I'm rarefied as well because I don't have anything either. I find it hard enough taking care of kids, why would I add to that? I've always thought my sisters-in-law were nuts for owning huge dogs when they have little toddlers to care for. I had enough to handle with my kids.
But even when they move out of the house, I won't be getting a pet because I'm not an animal person. I like going to the zoo and looking at them but I don't like touching them.
I love animals enough to know that having a pet is more responsibility than I want right now. PETA's tactics have always driven me nuts. (You don't get people to respect all life, including animals, by using tactics that show a basic disrespect for other people's rights.)
If Obama wants a purebred dog, more power to him. Without lots of different breeds of dogs, it would be difficult to breed healthy mutts.
