Michelle Obama: Don’t vote for a candidate because she’s cute

posted by Susan Johnson | 2:10pm Thursday September 18, 2008

Clinton was smart to avoid this kind of sexist drivel:

Michelle Obama asked voters Thursday to make their choice on the issues, not because, “I like that guy” or, “she’s cute.”

How dismissive and sexist! Following in sweetie’s footsteps I see.

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Did you miss the ‘I like that guy’ part?
She is saying don’t use trivial reasons like appearance or personality to decide your vote. She didn’t say who ‘he’ or ‘she’ is, or that this was the only good quality any candidate out there had. Only that you should vote based on more substantive reasons. And that’s ANTI-sexist.
Why, do you think people should vote for someone because they’re cute?

Sarah Palin’s Michelle McGinty-like good looks are pretty much the only reason to vote for her, unless moose policy is your number one issue. None of Palin’s other selling points hold up to close examination.

BTW, Michele was talking about herself. She’s cute, too, or haven’t you noticed?

How is that sexist? Don’t vote for somebody just because they’re good looking, or because they’re nice, or because they’re from your home state or because they like pickles. It’s like when Barack and Hillary were saying “don’t vote for me because of my race” and “don’t vote for me because of my gender.”
It’s about issues.

Not for the Republicans. It CAN’T be about issues or they will lose big.
Keep your back to the wall from here on out because if the past eight years have taught us anything, they’ve taught us that the Republicans are dirty fighters par excellence. They’re already filling the airwaves with the nastiest, sleaziest, steaming piles of bull**** they can extrude from their devious little minds, and it will only get worse.
Tell anyone you know who buys into this crap to take five minutes to check the facts on http://www.politifact.org or http://www.factcheckers.org
If they aren’t willing to spend five minutes doing this minimal act of civic responsibility, tell them they don’t deserve the vote that far better than they are died to defend.

You know, a group that until.. can’t say this year, what, a month ago never said the word ‘feminist’ unless it was an insult, and viewed any ‘ist’ charges as PC is incredibly awkward (no surprise there) at using the term themselves.
Rather like McCain’s campaign complaining the SNL skit with BOTH Clinton and Palin was ‘sexist’ because Clinton was portrayed as more substantive than Palin. Let’s see.. one woman politician got a more positive portrayal than another and its.. sexist?
I feel like Inigo Montoya. ‘Sexist.. you keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.’

Full quote (source HuffingtonPost):
“People shouldn’t make a decision this time based on, ‘I like that guy’ or ‘she’s cute,’” she said.
The line won a big round of applause. Before it subsided, she interjected: “And I’m talking about me.”

Truly, i’d say this makes your argument rather moot.

rob, seriously… eew. and that whine, ugh! and mcginty, you don’t know what sexism really is, if you’re getting all bent because of this. your faked outrage is bared for everyone to see when you can’t get the basics right.
by all means, michele, ignore the issues and vote on looks – miss juno for president (oh and that old white guy, mcspain, too). we would expect no better from you at this point.
