From $100,000 to $250,000. McCain proposed the same thing. The only problem is that when the House Republicans suggested this during recent negotiations, the Democrats rejected it. Maybe now that Obama is on board, congressional Democrats might be more open to the idea.

I'm in favor of raising the amount insured.
I don't think it will make much of a difference. Most people with that much money hanging around diversify and keep their investments in different money-earning vehicles.
That being said, the "$100,000" could easily be adjusted for inflation and the amount being floated is not unreasonable.
