It's not just that Ayers is a terrorist...

Obama isn't trying to hide the fact that he is liberal. His acceptance speech in Denver was one of the most full-throated defenses of liberalism I've heard in a long time. And John McCain has never hesitated to suggest that Obama is a liberal.

But connecting him with Ayers is going a step too far. For one thing, McCain/Palin rarely mention Ayers by name... they simply say Obama was "palling around with terrorists". They go on to suggest that he is not one of us. In short, the entire Ayers strategy is an attempt to sow fear. It is a racist tactic that should be condemned not modified to: "Obama is smoother and more marketable than Ayers, but ideologically they're coming from the same place".

Flail away.

After all, it's pretty obvious to everybody what a sick , twisted, parody of itself the GOP has become. They have no ideas, no clue as to what to do, now that their ideas have been tried and just don't work. So attacks with only the flimsiest scraps of 'proof' will have to do.

Obama hasn't spoken to Ayers in years. They were on a couple of charity boards together, including one run by a friend of Ronald Reagan. But since you Republicans have nothing else to offer, show us the full depth of your sickness. The voters are watching, and they're not impressed by the display.

You could, of course, offer something positive. Something to get us out of the economic crisis. But you have nothing to offer, and are now proving it by the daily displays of temper tantrums.

You need a time out. A long one. You're going to get the notice in a month.

Hate hate hate. Smear smear smear.
There were plenty of Republicans on these boards and at these same meetings. They make it sound as if it was just Bill and Barack. Have you never been on a board or at a meeting? How about with someone you didn't know well? How about with someone with a bad reputation. It's quite possible Barack enjoyed working with someone who gets the job done. Even someone who had turned their life around.

I am so thankful that Obama takes the high road at every turn and is not dragging pure old John McCain and his trophy wife through the mud. As president he will be able to be respected for his integrity.

In a 2 year process of vetting, if this is the best the Republican party can do, they really ought to lay off. They are starting to foam at the mouth.

October 10, 2008 2:34 PM

Oh, Michele!!!!! Please STOP THIS CHARACTER ASSASSINATION. Ayers was Distinguished Scholar, McKissick Museum of Education at the University of South Carolina in 2005. Does this mean GOP Governor Mark Sanford supports terrorists, too? Nazareth College gave Bill Ayers an honorary Ph.D. in 1996! Does that mean they are terrorists? The city of Chicago named Ayers "Citizen of the Year" in 1997 after he secured a $49.2 million award from the (Republican) Annenberg Foundation for school reform. (This is what funded the project for which he and Obama served on the same board--BIG DEAL.) Are the citizens of Chicago pro-terrorism? Are the Annenbergs?

Ayers was never convicted of anything. Obama has condemned the acts of the Weather Underground (committed when he was 8) as "despicable." END OF STORY.

This whole thing is a TOTAL CROCK and you know it and so do McCain and Palin, who are resorting to it because they are utterly desperate and have no cards left to play. They are trying to scare people about Obama, but anyone who listens to Obama and looks at what HE'S done with the cards HE was dealt in life can see what kind of man he is: decent, compassionate, looking to serve.

We are so lucky that a man like that is running for President, is willing to subject himself to what we all knew would come from the Republicans: these vile lies and dangerous attacks.

Obama will win on November 4, and he'll win because he ran a better campaign in all respects: smarter, better organized, on message, focused on the middle class, with substantive plans for the future.

"Will you only be happy, Michele, when someone plugs Obama? Because that is what you sound like you're aiming for. Same with McCain and Palin."

Of course that is what Michele and the other agitators on the right want. They want someone to listen to this drivel they are spewing, get righteously angry, pick up a gun and do to Obama what was done to MLK, Jack and Bobby Kennedy.

Mark my words, within 90 days of Obama winning the election, he will be shot by someone in the name of keeping a terrorist out of the White House.

Such is the Reformed Tradition at its best.

The economy is in free fall. There are much bigger, much more serious issues going on in the world yet you keep harping on Ayers, which is trivial in the larger scheme of things. Why?

I have to echo an earlier poster here. Will you only be satisfied if Barack Obama is killed, Michele? Will that be only thing that *finally* makes you stop beating the dead horse of the Ayers issue? That's what it's starting to sound like.

It's one thing to oppose Obama on his political positions. It's another to brand him a terrorist or terrorist sympathizer, and even your fellow conservatives and Republicans are starting to see the difference. I'd suggest doing the same. You're crossing the threshold into shrill and irrational by continuing to focus on Ayers to the exclusion of everything else going on in the world.

Maybe you should take a break from blogging until after the election.

Michelle, your ridiculous contortionist attempts to demonstrate affiliations and affinities that simply don't exist only continue to demonstrate that, like McCain and Palin, you are all out of any substantial ideas, proposals or solutions for this country or its people. Do you really think that's a valid way for any Christian to engage in public and political square? Are you not aware that the country's flirting with economic disaster, involved in two wars, that people are suffering, that we need healthcare and good jobs, and that we have real energy issues that need addressing? Any of that ring a bell????

Please, go home and find something edifying and constructive to contribute to the discussiion.

McCain-Palin supporters threaten to kill Obama and the candidates do nothing
Staff Reporter | Posted October 8, 2008 12:13 PM

FOUNDING SPONSOR

Senator John McCain and his running mate Governor Sarah Palin have been accusing Senator Barack Obama of associating with terrorists in recent days, and as a result, audience members at McCain and Palin rallies have called Obama a "terrorist" and threatened to kill him.

"Sarah Palin was on the verge of inciting a race riot in northern Florida" this week, the Nation reported. The paper said Republican audience members "hurled a racial epitaph" at an African American member of the media while other audience members yelled "kill him" and "treason!" when Barack Obama's name was mentioned. Palin did nothing to stop the attacks and reportedly responded: "Boy, you guys just get it!"

Palin began the attack on Monday when she told 8,000 fans at a rally in Florida that Obama "launched his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist," according to the Washington Post. "This is not a man who sees America the way you and I see America," she said.

The McCain-Palin ticket has become increasingly negative in recent days and some have called their attacks "dangerous" and "racist." But it's not just Obama who has come under attack.

Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank describes the scene at a rally in Clearwater, Florida this week, where he said "arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin blamed CBS News anchor Katie Couric for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." Palin supporters then "turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse," Milbank reported. "Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, 'Sit down, boy.'"

Michele, it will probably make very little difference in terms of the public discourse if you disavow your Party's inciting of violence against Obama because I don't think you have much of a readership or influence, but for the sake of your own reputation, any future you may have after you graduate, and for your own conscience and soul, PLEASE speak out against this demagoguery. I'm totally appalled at the inability of anyone on this board to distinguish between Michele stating the plain fact that, 'Obama has ties to a leftist revolutionary (former?) terrorist,' and the complete distortion of 'Michele hopes Obama dies a grizzly death.' There's a vast, vast difference between the two. Apparently she can see it, and you cannot. You are the ones being alarmist by insinuating, even straight out accusing her of supporting violence. PLEASE. I'm astonished. These are plain facts, people. And a few wacky people getting up-in-arms at a republican rally are so, so, so far removed from conservatives like us who are simply and justifiably worried about the consequences of electing a president who associates with terrorists and those who support terrorist organizations. Please remove your anger from those who think this is important information and use the energy to think about whether this is someone you want running your country.

ds0490

"There's a vast, vast difference between the two."

Not so much, especially as it is being cast here. "McCain shouldn't just focus on the guilt by association aspect of the relationship but should ask the question: why would a radical leftist who was driven to terrorism choose to support Obama? Obviously the answer is Obama shares his views."

Obama shares the views of someone who bombed places within our nation. Therefore Obama must also want to bomb places. That makes Obama a terrorist, and we have to stop terrorists.

By that measure McCain must share the views of David Duke, since he at one time endorsed McCain.

The guilt by association argument, especially when there is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that Obama shares Ayers' political views, is being used to inspire violence.

Even Rod Dreher gets it.

And then we have the following incidents:

"A man who authorities said was keeping weapons and military-style gear in his hotel room and car appeared in court Thursday on charges he threatened to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Raymond Hunter Geisel, 22, was arrested by the Secret Service on Saturday in Miami and was ordered held at Miami's downtown detention center without bail Thursday by a federal magistrate. "

www.tmz.com/2008/08/25/obama-under-fire/

A Denver TV station is reporting authorities may have foiled an assassination plot against Barack Obama, and there's talk the suspects may be members of a white supremacy group.

KUSA-TV claims three men are in custody after a routine traffic stop in Aurora (near Denver) turned up two rifles, high-powered scopes, ammo and meth. The man in the car led authorities to a hotel where another suspect jumped out of a fourth floor window in an attempt to escape."

Hillary Clinton, which Trotta described by saying that, "some are reading [it] as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama." Hemmer quickly corrected Trotta, having noticed that she had said "Osama" when she meant "Obama." At this point, Trotta said, "Obama. Well...both if we could!" Trotta then laughed gleefully."

This is the context into which McCain and Palin's remarks are being made. Two foiled assassination attempts and a national news organization laughing about killing a presidential candidate.

Fox Poll: Nearly Two-Thirds Say Ayers Makes No Difference To Their Vote
By Greg Sargent and Eric Kleefeld - October 10, 2008, 2:44PM

These numbers, buried in the internals of a new Fox News poll out today, are the first time a national poll has tried to gauge the impact of Barack Obama's association with William Ayers. And the numbers are pretty bad for McCain:

There has been some discussion of Barack Obama's relationship with the former radical activist William Ayers. Because Ayers is linked to plots to bomb the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol in the 1970s, and because Ayres recently said he wished he had done more, some people say Obama's association with Ayers calls into question his judgment. Does Obama's connection with Ayers make you less likely to vote for him for president or does it not really make a difference to your vote?

Less Likely 32%

No Difference 61%

Strikingly, the numbers are worse for McCain among independents: Only 29% say the Ayers association makes them less likely to vote for Obama, and more than twice as many -- 64% -- say it makes no difference. The data suggests that the vast majority of the respondents saying it makes them less likely to vote for Obama are Republicans, who probably wouldn't have supported him anyway.

Meanwhile, the poll suggests that McCain's attacks could be blowing back on him: A majority -- 51% -- say he's running a negative campaign, as compared to only 21% who say that about Obama.

Focusing on the trivial issue of Ayers to the exclusion of every other issue in the country, including the primary issue of the economy, is both shrill and irrational.

And Michele has yet to speak out against the people at McCain/Palin rallies who are calling for Obama's death, calling him a traitor, calling him a terrorist, and throwing around racial slurs. In fact, Michele goes the opposite direction by continuing to flog the "Obama = terrorist and/or terrorist sympathizer" meme on this blog despite the mounting evidence that such tactics are doing nothing but inciting racial hatred and could lead to violence.

More thoughtful conservatives have dropped Ayers, are speaking against the ugly rhetoric showing itself at McCain/Palin rallies, and are shifting their focus to the economy. The question is, will Michele do the same, or will she keep on this irrational path of Ayers?

It's a fair question.

Not evil. Just increasingly shrill and irrational. And she needs to take a break from blogging until after the election if all she's going to offer between now and then will by Ayers.

By not speaking out against the hateful rhetoric and racism being spewed at McCain/Palin rallies, and in fact by continuing to flog the same, tired Ayers nonsense that is stoking those fires, she's not doing the GOP or conservatism any favors. Words have consequences, and keeping up the "Obama = terrorist/terrorist sympathizer" meme is dangerous, as other, more thoughtful conservatives are starting to note.

"The guilt by association argument, especially when there is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that Obama shares Ayers' political views..."

Interesting, because I think there is evidence. He had his first political party at Ayer's house. How many of you go over to your terrorist/revolutionary friends' houses to throw parties? Oh, that's right, you don't have any, because there's absolutely no reason you would have sought them out unless you were interested in their ideas. And this is the second questionable figure to emerge from Obama's past.

"...is being used to inspire violence."

Interesting, because I find their connection worth exploring/contemplating, but yet I wish absolutely no violence on Barack Obama, or anyone else, for that matter, ever. I can't even kill bugs, seriously. Even small ones. I hope Obama gets a team of 64 intimidating, muscle-bound, black-belt body guards to surround him at all times. Doesn't mean I don't find his character way dubious.

I'm defending Michele here... there is a big difference between people like her and those who would monger fear at a political rally. I don't think people should back off of the question because they're scared of getting lumped in with some loons out there.

I think it works out nicely for Obama that we'll all ignore the question because Palin handled it all wrong.

Marjorie, are you familiar with Joe Bonanno and his connections with John McCain?

Bonanno was the head of a fairly large NY crime family. He "retired" from the position and took up residence in Arizona. When he celebrated his birthday back in 1995 I believe, he invited John McCain.

Now...why would John McCain be receiving a birthday invitation from a retired crime syndicate boss? Better yet, why would he send his best wishes to the boss when he was unable to attend the party?

www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/24/AR2008012403383.html

"A top political adviser in Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign helped arrange an introduction in 2006 between McCain and a Russian billionaire whose suspected links to anti-democratic and organized-crime figures are so controversial that the U.S. government revoked his visa.

Rick Davis, who is now McCain's campaign manager, helped set up the encounter between McCain and Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska in Switzerland during an international economic conference. At the time, Davis was working for a lobbying firm and seeking to do business with the billionaire."

Why would a sitting US Senator seek out a meeting with a person connected to the Russian Mafia? What was McCain wanting?

Those people should just give it up. The only way they will ever be convinced that Obama has "come clean" is if he stands up and says "You know what? You're right. Ayers and I are bestest fwends. Anything less and Obama is "still hiding something." These people have made a choice, and that is to count as a lie everything that Barack Obama says about himself, and has ever said. The amount of misinformation needed just to hint at a TENUOUS connection between the two men is telling (The meeting at Ayers' house was not a fundraiser, as some have reported. Ayers did not recommend Obama to chair the Annenberg foundation, as some have reported. Obama's quote about Ayers being "a guy who lives in my neighborhood" did not have the word "just" in front of it, as some have reported. etc.) And they keep moving the goal posts as to what exactly is the significance of the Obama/Ayers "relationship."

The Palins’ un-American activities

Imagine if the Obamas had hooked up with a violently anti-American group in league with the government of Iran.

By David Talbot

Oct. 7, 2008 | “My government is my worst enemy. I’m going to fight them with any means at hand.”

This was former revolutionary terrorist Bill Ayers back in his old Weather Underground days, right? Imagine what Sarah Palin is going to do with this incendiary quote as she tears into Barack Obama this week.

Only one problem. The quote is from Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American who founded the Alaska Independence Party. Inconveniently for Palin, that’s the very same secessionist party that her husband, Todd, belonged to for seven years and that she sent a shout-out to as Alaska governor earlier this year. (“Keep up the good work,” Palin told AIP members. “And God bless you.”)

AIP chairwoman Lynette Clark told me recently that Sarah Palin is her kind of gal. “She’s Alaskan to the bone … she sounds just like Joe Vogler.”

So who are these America-haters that the Palins are pallin’ around with?

Before his strange murder in 1993, party founder Vogler preached armed insurrection against the United States of America. Vogler, who always carried a Magnum with him, was fond of saying, “When the [federal] bureaucrats come after me, I suggest they wear red coats. They make better targets. In the federal government are the biggest liars in the United States, and I hate them with a passion. They think they own [Alaska]. There comes a time when people will choose to die with honor rather than live with dishonor. That time may be coming here. Our goal is ultimate independence by peaceful means under a minimal government fully responsive to the people. I hope we don’t have to take human life, but if they go on tramping on our property rights, look out, we’re ready to die.”

Great, gas is down to $3/gal. but the $20 in my wallet is worth $10, if that.

As on 9/11, I'm glad to have young, young children - toddlers and preschoolers - who haven't a clue. Their carefree spirit boosts my mood - we went to the county park this afternoon and played and laughed. You know, just look 'em over for deer ticks afterwards and, well, no ice cream treats, of course.

If guilt-by-association holds water, then I'm going to hell big time. And if six degrees of separation is valid, I'm not the only one in hot water on this.

Anyway, I keep coming back hoping to read about this fall term in seminary!!!! I hope to God michele isn't reading these reckless accusations. If she is, she could use your prayers because this is undoubtedly breaking her heart.

Peace.

This whole Obama=terrorist thing is such a tactical mistake on McCain's part. His staff pushed and push this dangerous opinion all over television and now he is now forced to defend his opponent instead of letting the question linger in the air. Sad.

I think the Palin's have proven their love of country by sending one of their children off to war.

I wonder if Obama would be willing to do the same thing?

Somehow, I think not.

Clearly McCain has decided that his best chance of winning the election is if Obama is killed before election day.

I sincerely hope that is not his plan, but with the increased rhetoric coming from Princess Palin, it might well be the case.

Hopefully they will fail in their efforts.

Well, Anonymous, it is interesting to speculate about whether or not Obama would send his daughters to war.. the campaign is full of just such idle speculation.

But, since his oldest is 10 YEAR OLD, that's all it is. Speculation.

Well, well, well...brother was a druggie and party boy, daughter was a mobile hospitality suite, and the unlucky guy get's stuck by mama Palin and forced to marry the girl.

Were I that boy I'd be demanding a DNA test before I claimed the kid. Sounds like the girl slept around even more than mama, and that poor Levi should get him a lawyer and force the Palins to prove he is the father.

Isn't it funny how liberal attacks always seem to devolve into the crudest possible sexual imagery?

Hey...just calling a spade a spade. Mama slept around with her hubby's best friend, so it's no wonder that the girl became a pass-around at school hockey games.

Like mother like daughter.

And, since the conservatives used the National Enquirer as a source for Edwards, they can hardly object to using it as a source now.

Exactly. I believe it was Rod Dreher who was defending the Enquirer when the Edwards story broke. He also danced a juvenile little jig when Edwards finally admitted to the affair. I wonder what he and McGinty will do when the goods finally come out on Palin?
