One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1. She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life. A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments.
The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others.
Through it, I have seen people reach out

“People really should think about what power they are willing to give this man and what he would do with it.
Doesn’t that statement also apply to John McCain? Or any other nominee? You sound a little envious that people are so supportive of Obama. Well after 8 yrs of Bush’s lies and deceit what do you expect?
George Bush has damaged the country by driving the divisions between us even deeper.

Well then Michele, I’m sure that the news that there was a plot to assassinate Obama sent shivers up and down your spine.
Because that’s what you’re pushing. Your words advocate violence, and if anything happens to Obama, you -and your fellow right-wing bloggers – will be sharing in the blame.
Oh, and I’m not fallen – that’s your religion, not mine.

Maybe the time to think of what kind of power we were giving someone was eight years ago. Look at the state of this country right now.
I think people should think about the power they are giving anyone, in one of the most powerful positions in the world.
You are suggesting we elect a man who changes his mind daily on what he wants to do for this country.
It’s pretty much a given, if he can’t keep his campaign in one particular direction, and he can’t do anything other then mud sling his opponent to keep any real focus on his inadequacy as a candidate, then the country will most certainly be in a worse state of chaos then it already is.
I truly amazes me, that because of party lines and prejudices, americans would be willing to sacrifice their own well being to elect another, clearly, inadequate president.

What is Reformed about this posting? From what I’ve read, you make Reformed Christianity appear to be a wing of the Republican Party–dangerously close to idolatry. Rather than self-righteously accusing others of idolatry, should our Reformed faith, with its admission of human sinfulness, call for a season of humility, repentance, and compassion even as we participate in the final days of this election?

You GREAT Americans!
Faith!
Fear!
Fools!
“You vipers and snakes! Why do you inject fear?
God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear!
God has given us Love, Power, and a Sound mind.
We speak about our enemies as Terrorist. Terrorism is an organized way of using fear. Are we terrorizing our own Country?
WOW!! This is a sad time in the USA.

The Republicans ARE trying to terrorize people into voting for them. Their true colors emerged in this election campaign, and the American people are rejecting their methods and their message. The Republicans practice both failed politics and failed policies that belong in the trash bin of history.

Michele, I sympathize with you. I know the feelings you’re having. You really dislike the guy who, it appears, will win the Presidency. It’s worst than awful! [LOL] I know the feelings because I’ve had 8 years of it. And, you’re feeling bad because all those “lefty libs,” as you like to call them, will be happy.
You’re not asking for it, but here’s some advice…take a deep breath and relax. Maybe this will be a time for you to reexamine your perspective. Maybe you should stop calling people names like “lefty libs” or branding candidates as Marxist when they’re not. Maybe it’s time you should realize that we’re all children of God, even it they’re not Republicans. Hope you feel better.

Can you survive without a stop light? Do your research and tell me how many great black inventors? Ohhhhhh, it is amazing. Your money says “In GOD WE TRUST”, you don’t even believe such a phrase. However, Many people have been led to believe if you “white” you must be right or must always lead. Not true. All of the critics, complain about what’s right but did you submit info or try to get involved to help make it right. What have you done lately to better your community or state, beside go along with the program. Color has no bearing when it comes to doing the right thing for entire world. Perhaps many of us will have time to rethink our perspective. Seems as though that’s what Obama and people like you (his shadows), want us to do. How did it work out for you over the last “8 years”. It looks like it didn’t help you. In fact, when you set your sights on “man”, you’re bound to be terribly disappointed. I’m not sure “sad” would be the emotion rational, intelligent people are thinking right now, I’d say it goes something like this:
It looks like the Ayers approach is having its effect. Instead of bombing the outside of buildings, go inside the buildings as a instructor and begin to change the “minds” of the little goslings.
Start early in public school, don’t teach the children about communism, Marxism, secularism so that when it matters they won’t have any clue what they’re drinking! It’s worked in past history and it appears to be working with many of you.
Have you ever thought of standing on your own two feet and making a living for yourself and give your time to help others that are in need around you because you want to do that, not because Big Brother legislates it. It would be an understatement to simply say you take for granted the priveleges you had bestowed on you.
Very foolish people on this site. Someone even suggested there should only be left wing liberals that make comments.

I work in a public school. No, students are not taught about communism, Marxism, secularism.
They are not taught about the founding documents, they are not taught about the Constitution, they are not taught about the Federalists Papers.
Perhaps at some schools, but not many.

Anonymous Reincarnate,
I did grow up in public schools in Orange County, CA. But I’m also 47 years old. Gifted programs, wealthy schools, that was my experience. We did learn about this in school, but I also lived during some of the cold war and knew and understood what the difference was between the USA and communist/socialist governments.
I lived in Germany as an Exchange Student in High School, did missionary work in Austria, went to Bucharest, Romania immediately after the fall of their dictator (who’s name I can’t remember how to spell), spent time in the embassy in Bucharest because of an injury my mom experienced and emergency assistance we needed and even ended up “adopting a Romanian” family in the early 90′s who came through International Rescue Committe and invited them to live in our home with us. Because of their determination and hard work and the one on one with an American family, they have had much success here.
I now live in the “liberal” Seattle metropolitan area and we send our 13 year old daughter to a private school where she receives an excellent education. You need only watch Jay Leno when he sends reporters out to ask questions on the street, how bright a vast number of our citizens are (scary).
It’s some of the Obama supporters that you may want to worry about. I listened to an excerpt from a Howard Stern program where he sent someone out to ask them who they were voting for in New York. He asked people in predominantly Obama friendly areas about why they were voting for him and plugged in all of McCain’s platform in place of Obama. They all said they were voting for Obama based upon McCain’s platform! Who’s drinking Kool-Aid?

MzEllen: “They are not taught about the founding documents, they are not taught about the Constitution, they are not taught about the Federalists Papers.”
I’m surprised, MzEllen. I’ve worked at a public school for over 15 years. We have government class that is a requirement for all of our students. They study the founding documents of our nation, explore the structure of our government, learn about the leaders in that government over the years who have contributed to making our nation one of the greatest in the world. They also explore some of the not-so-great things that have come out of our government, in hopes that they can learn from past mistakes.
Having run for public office a few years ago I have had the pleasure of speaking to this class about the experience, sharing with them how the process of becoming a candidate works, what happens in debates, and how some campaigns work. The teacher has also invited sitting office-holders to come in and talk with the students about the responsibilities of their office, and to take questions from the students about how government works from their vantage point.
I know a number of other schools here in SE Iowa also offer this class, and teach it in a similar format.
I’m surprised at your earlier remark about Marxism and Socialism being taught in the schools. Other than a few paragraphs in a world history book and an economics text, I don’t even think our kids hear anything about those concepts. It’s unfortunate since it leads to a number of misconceptions, but with so much else on the plate that we need to teach the kids I’d rather they go out with a poor understanding of other economic/governing systems than to go out with a poor understanding of our own.

I am trying to put my finger on why this rap rubs me the wrong way, you see … and I think that it’s because I don’t know the spirit in which it is delivered. If it’s supposed to be ironic or tongue-in-cheek, then I’m missing that. And that could be that I don’t get rap culture.

No, no, I’m not Reformed, you see.
(I don’t want to highjack this thread, but I appreciate your interest.)

I’m surprised too.
I’d say that just about everyone involved with this blog has a high-schooler’s understanding of politics and American government.

itsnottoolate, i got my education from public schools, too, and my small-town school did an excellent job of teaching us about socialism, marxism, communism, capitalism, and many other isms. and, mzellen, we also learned about the federalist papers as a lead in to our education about the constitution. these “isms” are still taught in our high school history classes today.
how do i know? my wife works in public schools, 3 close friends of mine are teachers in public schools. my kids are in public schools.
my kids learned about the declaration of independence, constitution, bill of rights, the branches of government, the revolutionary war, and our founding fathers early in school, as early as the 4th and 5th grade. the higher grades go into more depth still.
this is why people who paid attention in school realize that obama is neither a socialist nor a marxist nor a communist, no matter how many times mccain and you say he is. progressive taxation is a system that has been employed in this country for more than a century, supported by presidents and congresses and the vast majority of economists since.
you’re using leno’s “jay walking” skit as a measure of how many people out there are dumb? as if leno would show the many who actually have informed answers, ’cause that’s funny. you must be joking.
i heard the same stern show that you’re referring to. and just to point out, there were mccain supporters that he did the same thing to (attributed obama’s policies to mccain) and they completely agreed. for example they thought that mccain piking biden as v.p. was a good choice.
so, your claim about not teaching the “isms” in public school is wrong (you even argued against yourself), you use leno and stern as your sources of information and assume that obama supporters have never made a living for themselves. i see.

and you say you aren’t funny? please moonshadow, you’re too modest. but, yes, i was interested to know why you found it blasphemous. that’s why i threw in the painting question. our culture is saturated with biblical references. often, my kids complain about not getting a large enough helping of mashed potatoes and my response to them is “ask, and ye shall receive.” i’m not mocking, but simply using words that are well known to me as an answer to someone in wanting. maybe some would consider that blasphemous as well.
“I’d say that just about everyone involved with this blog has a high-schooler’s understanding of politics and American government.”
though some of us have studied beyond the high school level. but i can’t assume that for anyone else on this blog.
