Bob Jones University apologizes for racist policies

posted by Susan Johnson | 12:23pm Saturday November 22, 2008

Well, it’s about time! Why the heck did it take them this long to understand that God isn’t a respecter of persons and that we’re all created in the image of God and therefore all have equal worth and value:

A fundamentalist Christian University has apologized for racist policies including a one-time ban on interracial dating that wasn’t lifted until nine years ago and its unwillingness to admit black students until 1971.
[...]
“We failed to accurately represent the Lord and to fulfill the commandment to love others as ourselves. For these failures we are profoundly sorry. Though no known antagonism toward minorities or expressions of racism on a personal level have ever been tolerated on our campus, we allowed institutional policies to remain in place that were racially hurtful,” the statement said.

So, do you question their timing?

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Wow, that’s really saying something.
So, do you question their timing?
No, I don’t. Boy, you are more skeptical than I. Who knew? :-)

Moonshadow – you are dead right in questioning Bob Jones University’s timing in apologizing for their racial policies in the past. They hoped the whole issue would just dry up and blow away, but the president got a petition signed by 500 current students asking for the apology. As always, money was the bottom line. They didn’t change the ban on enrolling black students until 1971, when the gov’t threatened to withhold their federal money if they didn’t, and they didn’t apologize until they were afraid prospective students would be put off. Very perceptive of you!

Mary! The *president* got a petition signed by 500 students asking for the apology??
No, no, no, no. Go look at the petition. There are a few current students that signed. But very few. Many were too afraid to sign. I talked with them personally. And I signed way back in the Spring.
And Stephen Jones (my former student, btw) had absolutely nothing to do with it. This was Jon Henry’s brain child. It was entirely alumni-driven. Go check out the facts.

The apology seems interestingly timed…let’s see, the first Black President has been elected…on November 4, 2008 and coincidently Bob Jones U. has decided to “issue an apology” for it’s past racial policies? Guess it is a “better late than never” apology. ____It took them until 9 years ago to lift a ban on interacial dating? Great Christians, huh?

Maybe you should ask yourself that same question next time you think about your stance on gay rights.

It took the Southern Baptist Convention 150 years to apologize for starting their denomination on defending slavery.
“Slaves! be obedient to them that are your masters, according to the flesh, in fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ”– St. Paul
So how much longer will it take for so many Reformed churches to apologize for refusing to ordain women?? No doubt 50 years from then there will be an apology to LBGT community.
And let’s not pretend we don’t know why so many Reformed mothers homeschool their children… Google “Rushdoony” and “inter-racial marriage”.

A dissenting opinion here. Bob Jones U and its neighbors alike were still reading the Old Testament story of Noah as supporting slavery and segregation well into the 1960′s. Sadly, members of my own family, in South Carolina and Texas, did, too. They don’t need to apologize for their “remarks” about African-Americans. They need to apologize for their reading of Scripture.

I am also sure the timing was not a coinicidence…Liberalism is ascendant with all the hypocrisy you usually find there and it has pretty much gained the power to do as it pleases. I shouldn’t be the only one in awe of the racism of democrats and the doublethink used by the media to defend it. The first black President easily stole the election after having attended a church which promoted black nationalism overtly and was led by a pastor who screamed almost incoherently about “greedy white people” and the damage they cause. Louis Farakahn was an honored guest…yes the one who stated the white race are “devils” and white people are “potential humans”.
Want to guess the odds of a white candidate winning after even passing *by* a church which stated that it was “unashamedly white”…or was dedicated to “white values” or even “allegiance to white leadership who espouse our values”?
So Bob Jones has seen the light. Or at least it’s tax status :) And if it hasnt belatedly realized that its position is wrong it has at least recognized that it is powerless to have an opinion different from liberal orthodoxy.
It is just reality. If you are not Barack Hussein’s church, or a wealthy Chabab Lubavitch center of Democrat donations, then you are not allowed to preach racial or ethnic preservation.

I agree with those who point out that this apology is long overdue, but to those who know anything about the South, the dozens of segregated schools and colleges there for centuries until the mid 1960′s, and the long history of this university of “never apologizing” for anything, this is a major paradigm shift in “attitude” for BJU. It would be a huge and hypocritical mistake for we reformed believers to mock this new college president for doing the right thing. The timing has nothing to do with the president-elect and everything to do with thousands of BJ grads who have been petitioning via letter for over ten years for the school to right this egregious wrong. For these dogmatic fundamentalists to publicly apologize for a position they formerly held at willingness to lose hundreds of millions of dollars (they lost their tax-exempt status back in the ’80s)is really quite remarkable and the state of SC should be proud. Most of the people I know that hold really inexcusable hurtful opinions die without making amends. I’d like to know more about this Stephen Jones.

Creedo,
It’s “Chabad”. Better to be an anti-Semite and illiterate. It makes you less credible. And they generally support the Republicans (which is a crime since no Jew should be supporting the Xian party). Sheesh!
And why don’t you tell us about stealing an election, since everyone with a functioning brain stem know the SOB in the White House right now stole the election in 2000 (I guess the though of a Jew a heartbeat away from the presidency was just too scary for the open minded Pubs), and probably 2004 (in Ohio).
Damn, you people make it so easy.

Nothing funnier than a helpless liberal whining about typos. When beaten on the facts find something…a typo, a punctuation error maybe even a split infinitive :)
I suppose by “they” this poor guy meant that US Jews support Democrats. Such an embarrassment. He did manage to get the spelling correct. Too bad what he spelled was factually wrong.
Barrack Hussein received 78 percent of the Jewish vote
John Kerry garnered 74 percent of the Jewish vote in 2004
Al Gore won 79 percent of the Jewish vote eight years ago
(njdc.org/blog/post/update2008jewishvote112008)
Why do you think Democrats always spend so much valuable campaign time at these racist Chabad-Lubavitch enclaves? The ones where the women remain standing outside the rooms while the men sit and talk. Liberal hypocrisy at its finest.
Now of course by supporting the Democrats “they” at least are not supporting an “Xian party” right Scott?
And we know who won the election in 2000. That is why Al Gore said “congratulations Mr President” when the electoral votes were counted in the senate:) And we know he skated to yet another victory in 2004.
And remember…President Bush won *without* campaign help from ABC, CBS,NBC,CNN et al. He won without government paid groups like Acorn registering 105% of the vote. He won without Palestinian terrorists phone banking for him and he won without 300,000.00 donations from the PLO. He won without Secretaries of State refusing to purge dead voters from the rolls. In other words, unlike Barack Hussein, he won fair and square. Twice.
There is a lesson to you here Scott R. The “easy” way is not always the right way. Often it is just being lazy.

Creedo,
You know nothing about traditional Judaism, so your anti-Semitic whining falls flat. Somehow I’m sure you’re not ashamed of being a racist – which is why you’re an apologist for Bob Jones U, and why people in the South had no problem being apologists for slavery and Germans were complete apologists for their…Germaness – including after the war.
Again, you demonstrate your limited intelligence by your attacks on Chabad. You could say that woman being separated from men is misogynist. But you couldn’t call it racist. But you did. So how can we take a person who is grammar, spelling, and vocabulary-challenged seriously? Besides being a racist anti-Semite.
Jews vote for Democrats, because the Republicans are the Xian party. The Pubs are supported by the fundamentalist/evangelical Xians, who are, for the most-to-entire-part, not fond of Jews, and who only support Israel so that all the Jews in the world will move there, enabling JC to come back – who will then slaughter us if we don’t convert. Personally, I can live without ”friends” like that.
Gore said “Congratulation Mr. President” to the Liar-and-Cheater in chief because he didn’t want the country ripped apart. We well could have devolved into civil war over the State of Chad – personally, I think the Democrats gave in a little too easily – sometimes a little civil disobedience in the protection of liberty is necessary. That’s a take on Thomas Jefferson, which I am sure that would elude you as well.
And now we only have 57 days before the door of the White House slams on Bush’s butt, and the ghosts of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR and Kennedy say “Don’t come back.”

Face it Scottstien. You have been humiliated..again.
Your struggle to keep your stories straight reminds me of a Florida Democrat struggling to make sense of a simple ballot. I can scroll up two posts and see you say:
“And they generally support the Republicans (which is a crime since no Jew should be supporting the Xian party). Sheesh!”
And then read this one where you admit “Jews vote for Democrats, because the Republicans are the Xian party.”
And now I really think I should have a little pity on you and just leave it at that :) I should not pain you more by reminding you of Algores lawyer fueled attempts to divide the country when he lost the 2000 election. Or how ironic it was to see him whine about losing in court…after running to court to overturn an election.
The democrats didn’t “give in”. They got their asses handed to them and whimpered off with their tails tucked. Like you should do now.
Or do you need another two posts to give me six more illogical and conflicting claims?
