But they pushed society hard into granting them the right to marry and now they aren’t going to have either in Florida:

The most controversial– the Florida marriage protection amendment. Voters in Florida decided to identify marriage as the union between a man and a woman, nothing else– banning gay marriage and extra benefits for domestic partnerships. Florida will now be one of approximately 30 states with a definition of marriage in its constitution.

I think that most people probably don’t have a problem with civil unions so that gays can legally establish their relationship for visiting their loved ones in the hospital and other legal situations. But it doesn’t seem like society is ready to embrace a new definition of marriage.
But the beauty of America is that the states decide this issue and if gays want to marry they can move to Massachusetts, it may not be as beautiful as Key West but if they really want to marry they have some place to go.
BTW, this passed overwhelming in a state that Obama won — 60% voted for it. This isn’t just Christian Republicans stopping gay marriages, this is Democrats as well.
