Steve Waldman has the numbers from the exit polls and does an analysis. Obama gained among every group: Catholics, Evangelicals and Jews. I guess reaching out to those groups and finding a way to down play his infanticide vote (in the case of babies who survive abortions) worked .
And I guess Christians will reap the benefit of their vote when Obama signs the Freedom of Choice Act. Well done, my Christian brethren.
One silver lining of this election (and there have actually been several) is that Christians can sever their identification with the Republican party. I'm not saying that we'll abandon the party (or the abortion issue -- we can never give up that fight), just that we now no longer are tied to it they way we were under the Bush administration. That removes a huge burden off our shoulders! Thank the Lord for that!

How about we declare a truce for just a few days, folks? Let's all take a breather, as our good friend Charles Cosimano suggested in an earlier post. We could all use it.
Why don't we each share a story about something good or inspiring or moving that we witnessed during the election campaign, or some positive word that will uplift and strengthen us for the road ahead?
Come on, let's do it. If nothing else, it will exercise mental and spiritual faculties that haven't been in much use of late.
Sorry, Michelle, but the religious right forfeited the pro - life issue by supporting the Iraq War and making it clear that they could care less about the massive civilian casualties: 700,000 to 1,000,000 people. Evangelicals claimed that the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis was justified by increasing the freedoms of and providing a better future for the Iraqis that remained. Well, excuse me, but isn't that the same logic that the pro - abortion people used, that unwanted children inhibit career and educational opportunities, etc.? (Please spare us with the idea that the Iraq War was about self defense, we have been over there 6 years and have produced absolutely no evidence that Saddam had the ability or the willingness to sponsor a military or terrorist attack on America. The only reason why good evangelicals ever believed it was because Bush said so, as if Bush was the Bible incapable of LYING or a Protestant pope or something. Not one single evangelical leader who bought the Iraq policy hook line and sinker as recanted after Bush showed his true colors by repeatedly stating that he believes that all religions worship the same God and that there is salvation outside of Jesus Christ, which is no different from Bill Clinton's, Jimmy Carter's, or for that matter even Barack Obama's soteriology. Religious right leaders pronounced George W. Bush a member of the kingdom of heaven based on his "values" and political affiliation, and for that reason they blindly supported the slaughter of 700,000 Iraqis.)
My guess is that these evangelicals looked at the Iraq carnage and decided that when giving between one party that is openly anti - life and another party that lies about being anti - life, they decided to go with the people that weren't hypocritical liars. Not that I endorse their decision (any more than I would have endorsed Iraq warmonger in chief wannabe McCain), but you cannot claim that they failed the pro - life cause by refusing to ignore the blood of over 700,000 innocent Iraqis.
I second yelladawgNC: "How about we declare a truce for just a few days, folks? Let's all take a breather, as our good friend Charles Cosimano suggested in an earlier post. We could all use it."
Michele,
I didn't find your tone to be sarcastic
James writes above: "Yes, Iris. Because Christians should apparently believe that God wants them to permit their babies to live only if their government provides all things necessary for life. And we all know that mankind has survived for millenia only because of the blessings which governments have provided, taking from one simply because he has "enough" and giving to another simply because he doesn't have "enough"."
James,
Didn't God tell us that we are our brother's/sister's keeper? I agree with you that we all shouldn't be relying on the government for everything.
I would also suggest that you don't rely on Republicans for too much. They've already had plenty of time to revisit "Roe V. Wade" in the last couple of years (specifically with the Bush appointees to the High Court).
Maybe instead of lobbying the government with lots of money and resources, Christians (particularly Evangelicals) can start setting up adoption programs, and pre-natal care programs for overwhelmed mothers. (Interestingly, I don't think Dobson - Focus on the Family; Pat Robertson - 700 Club & Liberty University; the late Jerry Falwell - Moral Majority; Benny Hinn; etc. put any of their massive resources toward adoption programs or helping poor expectant mothers.)
Even if you abhor the abortion procedure and scientific justification, you must consider that if abortion is outlawed - they'll still be performed. Just because something is the law of the land; it doesn't necessarily end or deter the prohibited behavior. You can consider how unsuccessful the "Drug War" has been.
Maybe Christian charity is the best way to prevent abortion. All the Evangelical and Catholic groups lobbying the Bush administration haven't achieved squat.
'No' to truce.
as you move forward in your life in Christ.
Sounds nice.
