Wal-Mart clerk killed in Black Friday stampede

posted by Susan Johnson | 10:47am Friday November 28, 2008

I’m sorry but something is wrong with you if you need merchandise so badly that you would rush a store to get it.

A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.
The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

I can see being moved along by the crowd and have no choice (this has actually happened to me before) but people were still trying to get into the store while the paramedics were trying to save his life:

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk’s life.
“They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. “People were still coming through.”

I wouldn’t want the iPod Touch, the HP laptop, Samsung camera if I knew that someone died so that I could get. How can you give your gift to someone knowing that it’s associated with a death? Especially if you were one of the people who trampled on the Wal-Mart clerk.

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. Look, I don’t understand Black Friday in the least but this story just drives home the fact that we can commit terrible wrongs – any day of the week – and be completely unaware … or in denial, even blaming someone else.
How can our unconscious yet still culpable sins be repented of? We need God’s grace to recognize them in the first place and then repent.
I hope the folks involved receive that actual grace.

The majority of the stampedees were probably women. As the pack approaches the store they stand and wait patiently as the Gate Keeper’s eyes widen knowing the impending danger that lay ahead for him. Working in teams planning and plotting. Hearts race and mouths salivate as the moment nears…IT HAS OPENED. I can see the rage in their eyes as they clutch their purses and pass the school supply isle and housewares making a bee line to electronics. Growling and snapping at others while scanning the shelves for the remaining MP3 players, PS3, Xbox, and Wii games. Anger soon sets in after not coordinating the attack as planned and now they are reduced to scavengers. In a fit of anger and jealousy a scuffle breaks out in the music isle where there are no-name mp3 players and digital cameras left. While exiting they stare each others findings and congradulate each other on the great deal.

If this was some third world country where starving people where rushing in for food I could halfway make since of it. But these are idiots stampeding for crap! People…learn to separate your wants from your needs! This is why so many are poor right now! You want toys…you need food and clothing.

Sick, sick, sick. How greedy can you be? If the stampede was really responsible for his death (after all he could have had a coronary or something) I wish they had locked the store and prosecuted all of those a*holes for reckless endangerment or something.
every time I see one of those ads about stores that open at 4am I always wonder about the employees. What time do they have to be at the store, so we can shop at the crack of dawn? What happens if they say no to coming in that early? This just really makes me want to throw up, it’s so sick.

I won’t go near a large store the day after Thanskgiving. I can’t run that fast and the cattle prod batteries wear down real fast after zapping the other shoppers.

That Wal-Mart story is precisely why I do most of my Christmas shopping online and weeks in advance. It’s also why I avoid going anywhere on Black Friday and just spend a lazy day at home instead. There isn’t anything in stores that I need badly enough to deal with the crowds and insanity.

Merry Christmas to all those people who murdered this employee just to save a buck. How sick are ya’ll to continue shopping knowing what you did. My prayers go out to this employees family and friends.

My heart goes out to this employee’s family. I hope Walmart at least provides financially for his family, but I doubt it. Two black Friday’s ago (not during the rush, but in the vacant late afternoon) a Walmart employee dropped a stack of electronics on me that he was putting on the shelf. They haven’t even covered the cost of the hospital.

Hmmm… I’m not sure I can condemn the shoppers. In a large crowd like that, I imagine it would be hard to know what was going on in front until you were actually there, and at that point it’s hard to stop. They could have seen EMS personnel tending to somebody, but unless there were large amounts of blood or something, it could have looked like he just fainted.
I guess you could say that the crowd in general should have known that rushing in like that was dangerous, and shouldn’t have done it. But that seems thin.
I primarily blame store management for advertising aggressively and then failing to ensure crowd control.

Haven’t we learned anything yet? Isn’t there a better way than to risk injury or death to save a buck? This is truly disturbing

I never go out on a day called Black friday. Sounds like a bunch of animals. I would rather pay a few pennies more and be safe. Doesn’t sound like the kind of area I would want to be in.

This is truly sickening and quite sad. The worst times brings out the good in people and the best times (save a buck) brings out the bad in people. I hope the employee who died that his family gets compensated. I hope they catch those dumb mobs at the front and be charged and be sent to the death penalty. A mob of thousands should have some control, however blaming the government or others does no good it’s though dumb stupid mobs in the front those killers that should be of blame and be put to death. I am truly upset and just outright furious.

Though a single tragic death in a retail stampede in New York is newsworthy, the hostage takings of hundreds in Mumbai, formerly Bombay, grabs my attention. After three days drugged up Tamil pirates that landed in the financial district targetting British and American passport holders in 5 star hotels, the jewish quarter, not to mention the use of AK 47s and grenades to clear your way through a train station seems the more morally repugnant deliberate act of cowardice.

I can’t believe people can be so stupid about early sales cause now days people are out of control about sales. I also heard about another store 2 people shot each other in “Toys R Us” here in California. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn’t shop at the stores that have sales because people kill people who are in their way of life and you hear about people and how they wait and what time they started to live in the parking lot. They even put a coffee pot on the sidewalk and try to make it look like they’re camping out or they moved in as well. I would say people are too crazy out there for me and my family.

I really hope people see what’s going on in the world. People’s lives are of no value anymore. Innocent people around the world are getting killed for no reason at all, and now people are getting killed so we can save a buck. If people would stop and think and respect others, if for nothing else, but just because because we are human being who bleed the same color blood and breathe the same air. We need to learn to live and love each other. We are all children of god. GOD BLESS EVERYONE

To the person who remarked on the greedy mob being “lefty lib democrats”…get over it. McCain lost and Obama is the incoming President. The focus of the comments area has to do with the black Friday madness that contributed to the death of a clerk at Walmart. A person lost their life (and another miscarried) because people were unable to regulate themselves when the mob mentality took over. Have you ever heard of the mob mentality? This is not a political issue, this is a human nature issue. Our country is in one of the worst recessions in history and as such people are really feeling the pinch of said financial burdens. That being said, our society has gotten away from respect for human life in the drive to compete with everyone, be the best, acquire the most goods and basically only show concern for oneself. You displayed that in your remarks by attacking others instead of getting to the heart of the matter which is someone lost their life and for what reason? For some plastic bobbles that will end up filling our landfills in time. I am sure you and your “righty conservative repubs” see no issue in that and that is part of the problem in and of itself. Greed is not good. As we saw on Black Friday, Greed can kill. Thanks Guy Arthur Thomas for your insightful comments. Next Please!

No one knows the party of the shoppers—no count was taken.
FYI, most liberals do not approve of shopping at WalMart because:
1. When a store charges such low prices, they crush locally owned businesses, the heart and flavor of every city and town.
2. Low prices mean low wages for WalMart employees.
3. They greatly discourage unions. No one has a defense to turn to when WalMart mistreats their employees.
4. No, they cannot work elsewhere because all the competitors stores have closed down or are not hiring because their business is so poor. Thanks to WalMart.
5. Low prices? How? They also forced low buying prices from suppliers—which means large companies that make WalMart’s products have to pay their own employees less, in turn.
BIG FYI to the above commentators: OBAMA DOESN’T SHOP AT WALMART.
