Atheist's sign stolen from the Captial

Saturday December 6, 2008

Well, that didn't take long, did it? What the heck was this person thinking: A controversial anti-religion placard that's a part of the Capitol's holiday gift went missing Friday morning only to turn up at a Seattle radio station nearly...

At least no one strapped the person who posted the sign to a rack and disemboweled him. Seems y'all religionistas have become slightly more civilized since your glory days, no?

I definitely do not approve of stealing the sign.

But I would note one difference between the sign and the Nativity scene (which I do not think should be on government property).

The sign intentionally insults the beliefs of others. The Nativity scene may offend some non-Christians (though not all) but there is ntohing in the tableaux which intentionally sets out to insult and denigrate the beliefs of others.

If the people who stle the sign were religious, then they certainly acted in a hypocritical fashin.

The people who posted the sign acted in a manner every bit as self-righteous and judgmental as the the people they claim are so intolerant.

Note to blah...

Nor did anyone shoot them in the back of the head and dump them in mass graves like the ones I saw in the former USSR where up to 250,000 we buried...many for simply holding "unelightened" religious beliefs instead of embracing the atheism of Stalin.

As a Christian, I totally oppose the theft of the sign in question. As a believer in the spearation of church and state, I also think the Nativity scene should not be set up on government property.

But there is a difference between the two displays. The Nativity scene may have the effect of offending some (though not all) non-Christians, but that is not its intention. The sign was deliberately worded to insult the beliefs of religious people of all kinds. It makes a broad, stereotypical judgment of the kind you would expect from the most rabid fundamentalist.

That is hypocrtical, too.

Note to Michele...
I see my initial post did make it onto the board (Complete with numerous typos. Really shouldn't write just after getting up!) This posting system really needs work!

Wasn't there a controversy in Washington about Hannukah symbols either last year or a couple years ago? Is this a kind of sport up there?

Robert, I'm pretty sure about this but could be wrong. Somebody please check me. A couple of years ago a Jewish group wanted to put up a Menorah (sp?). Understandably, a Christian wanted then to display a manger scene. It was originally rejected as being too religious. So he sued. His case was taken up by the conservative Alliance Defense Fund. They won and a settlement was drawn up allowing all points of view without discrimination. Hence the atheist sign.

What gets me about this is the seeming hypocracy. Some Christians felt excluded and understandably wanted "a place at the table." But now, when the atheists want a place at the table, some Christians think we should be excluded.

Why can't they can have the nativity scene with a menorah, Mary wearing a kaftan, Joseph in a dashiki and kufi and a black baby Jesus holding the sign which was stolen.

Wouldn't that make everyone happy?

The thief blew it. He violated his belief system, the law, and drew attention to an ideology he disagreed with.

The comment section of the linked article can't be taken as the intent of Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) who put the sign up. So the obvious question to the offended is how could a sign state FFRF's lack of belief in a way you would not find offensive? Dan Barker the co-president of FFRF was a Christian preacher before he became an atheist, so the wording on the sign reflects his need to take a stand on the issue.

When you think about it there's no way to create a display of a negative belief, so a sign stating their belief is the only thing FFRF can do. The article also had the text of the theist rebuttal and the abandoned first draft which frankly struck me as pretty weak.

I do not think the sign is a good idea because it makes FFRF seem like the Grinch. Christmas is a popular holiday and most of the non-religious like Christmas trees and are at least neutral on Nativity scenes. Personally I like Nativity scenes because I like children and animals, so I think they look cute together.

It may seem all grinchy-like but, when better to point out the hypocrisy of a belief system than at the very time of it most hypocritical holiday? It's ironic to me that these Christians are protesting the slandering of a pagan holiday they themselves slandered and then adopted because they could not eliminate it entirely. At the slightest criticism they will scream persecution and yet they persecute all beliefs but their own as though it's necessary for their "Get Outta Hell and Into Heaven FREE" card. Our culture as a whole needs an education in the lies of the major religions swept under the rug time and again. If people wish to celebrate a holiday, let them celebrate fully informed as to why it is worthy of celebration. To continue celebrating lies is intellectual treason.

Naturally modern Christians ignore the Old Testament command against even having or displaying Christmas trees and other idols representing the Pagan holiday of December 25. "Do not learn the ways of the nations or take alarm at the heavenly signs, alarmed though the nations may be at them. Yes, the customs of the people are quite futile: wood, nothing more, cut of a forest, worked with a blade by a carver's hand, then embellished with silver and gold, then fastened with hammer and nails to keep it from moving. - (Jeremiah 10:2-3)

If I ask a Christian why they ignore this clear command against displaying Christmas trees and other ornaments they are never aware that this passage even exists. So they babble a bit and explain how the they aren't "under the law" so this passage doesn't pertain to them. Yet they complain when others don't follow the laws in the Old Testament. Nothing proves the stupidity, ignorance and arrogance of the average Christian more than these types of things. The definition of Christian has become 'one who has never studied the Bible.' Michelle and the rest of the Christian posters on this site are a prime example of this. ROFL!

I'm an atheist who believes that most atheists are as intolerant and repugnant as the Christians they mindlessly attack.

Who cares if their little protest sign was stolen? Who cares if a Christian sign was stolen?

Frankly I enjoy peaceful acts of protest. The sign was clearly meant to irritate Christians. Stealing the sign was clearly meant to irritate atheists. I'm very happy that anybody who finds this irritating is irritated.

ENERGY IS THE KEY TO CIVILIZATION- dont believe me- go live just one day in the woods- the valuable resource is getting dry as india and china want to live a little like the west-cant blame them- who i do blame is being on this net for so long as everyone uses their own arrogance and negativity to ignore solutions for energy- how many people have you met in your life that says they solved it- go ahead and ignore this as the rest in past year- when the total economy fails- dont be puzzled as you did nothing- pressure a university to investigate and repeat- i dont want your money-take your energy and help solve the energy crisis

CALL and or write to princeton for example and encourage them to discharge a tesla coil into heavy water as per my freely disclosed papers and videos portray-the solution to the energy crisis is in your hands- it will take a third party- not the discoverer himself professing it- go ahead prove me right or wrong already- 19 months now as economy crumbles over energy and our soldiers battle for it- what will you do

If I lived in a more perfect world I would just live my days as a scientist- but I do not live in such- instead atheism and theism battle for hearts and minds- a world where many preach nothing on public forums as so many devout followers of peace and unity thru god try to make sense of it- well I have added my beliefs as my free will- MY MAIN PURPOSE is to encourage you to uncover my science experiments which will solve the global energy crisis-

CHRIST IS KING

I love the man called jesus-a life of struggle and sacrifice for the betterment of mankind- this is the highest principle of life to live-struggle in any form- you want a strong body- train hard all the time- take one week off and you deteriorate- want a strong mind-read and learn everything as often as you can-want an enlightened soul- love god with all your heart and soul and struggle and sacrifice for the betterment of mankind-Life is a struggle- I wouldn't have it any other way- Free will

Moses and Mohamed are brothers of the same entity- one with a staff-one with a sword- for man needs to understand discipline- bless all the nations peoples and their messengers to bring peace and unity to her children-and our duty continues until all submit to the chosen one of peace and love-the struggle for the sick and poor-the one that sits at the right hand of the father- the Christ- man of peace- our duty continues under god

* my name is Solomon Sami Azar-born on the 13th January-1965. I have combined the century old ideas of Tesla and Einstein to produce safe nuclear fusion of heavy water in order to end the energy crisis- When the scientific community has found this and understands -the energy crisis will be over along with talks of greenhouse gases-I have been guided to this discovery by the heavens- by a force in this universe we are all connected to in spirit and pray to in the name of god- I have put together many signs and connections to form the big picture- I am a messenger of GOD---I have been sent by heaven to declare An Age of Unity has begun- world war 2 was Armageddon signified by two atomic bombs-An age of unity has begun

There is absolutely no question I understand how "crazy" this may seem-for crazy today is normal tomorrow-yet a serious matter is at hand- I hold the secret to the global energy crisis-one in which will drop costs of energy in all sectors-does it feel good as energy drops? imagine all sectors in which factories-schools-homes are powered by such-thus a battle of arrogance- like political party's who take sides- you who dont like my views or beliefs ignore my deeds- against my stand as a messenger with my free will-thus- energy crisis worsens- CATCH 22

some day the truth will reveal I am doing my duty-not arrogance-what is your excuse for not helping the son of man

I believe YOU will continue to ignore me as our global economy continues to crumble-nations continue to move military pawns around to secure energy assets for future use-and ww3 comes very soon- the religious people will say christ will come- I AM THE MESSENGER- thru me is christ and man does not force the hand of god- our duty on earth continues by faith until THY will be done on earth as it is in heaven- PEACE- thus- again you will ponder it- maybe even crucify and try to kill- for surely i have witnessed your ugly remarks upon this net-But I have have not come to be crucified- I have a message of unity- it seems you must be brought to your knees first before you listen- it happens in front of you with economic downturn- it is your fault- you ignore the messenger who brings a gift -

I love how Christians make an argument from plurality (free exercise) to allow their idols to be installed in public spaces, but as soon as other groups claim the same right, it's suddenly not okay. Similarly, a dull sign with words on it is an abomination, yet going door to door, putting placards in peoples mail boxes, putting up giant LED signs beside major highways, and generally saturating our culture with threats of physical punishment and apocalyptic renderings of our national history, that's perfectly okay. Chipper!

Seperation of church and state = government neutrality, not government singling christians or atheists out. Concerning the display, let everyone including atheists display what they want. Same thing with prayer. Government shall not force people TO pray nor shall it force them NOT to pray. Government neutrality. I hope Im getting the idea accross.

by the way, I am a Christian.

Some Christians want a theocracy, some atheists want a secular state.

as for me I want neither. I want us all to peacefully coexist under the roof of a free republic. If I have to I might vote for Ron Paul just to give the govrernment the spanking it needs.
