Reid would rather see Blagojevich resign and Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn make the appointment then allow the voters the comfort of knowing that cronyism wasn’t involved in the selection. We all know why he’s doing this, he doesn’t want the Republicans a shot at the seat and with all the scandal going on in that state, it’s a very real possibility. He also threatened that if Blagojevich makes the appointment, the Senate may not seat his choice (I’m sure if Obama let Reid know it was the candidate he wanted, they would seat Blagojevich’s choice). Here’s the letter:
We write to insist that you step down as Governor of Illinois and under no circumstance make an appointment to fill the vacant Illinois Senate seat. In light of your arrest yesterday on alleged federal corruption charges related to that Senate seat, any appointment by you would raise serious questions.
It is within the authority of the Illinois legislature to remove your power to make this appointment by providing for a special election. But a decision by you to resign or to step aside under Article V of the Illinois Constitution would be the most expeditious way for a new Senator to be chosen and seated in a manner that would earn the confidence of the people of Illinois and all Americans. We consider it imperative that a new senator be seated as soon as possible so that Illinois is fully represented in the Senate as the important work of the 111th Congress moves forward.
Please understand that should you decide to ignore the request of the Senate Democratic Caucus and make an appointment we would be forced to exercise our Constitutional authority under Article I, Section 5, to determine whether such a person should be seated.
We do not prejudge the outcome of the criminal charges against you or question your constitutional right to contest those charges. But for the good of the Senate and our nation, we implore you refrain from making an appointment to the Senate.

No – resign so that he can’t taint the selection of a new senator any further !!! Your analysis is pretty bad. Reid never said that special election was out and Obama in fact is behind the idea. Besides, there is nothing that says Blag wouldn’t select a republican. I bet you would be totally on board if that was the case, huh?

Michelle, as matters stand right this very minute, the people of Illinois don’t get to vote anyway. Pick another topic to get flustered about, will ya’?

The State of Illinois would have to spend $50 million on a special election when it is billions in debt due to Blagojevich’s mismanagement now.
Such an election would take months to put together, during which time, Illinois would be underrepresented in the Senate in a time of crisis.
Michele, you are obviously ignorant of the fact that Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn has been totally estranged from Blago. They haven’t even spoken casually since the Summer of 2007! Quinn recently led an effort to reform the Constitution of the state which would have provided for recall of state officials. He was clearly trying to provide a way to eject this corrupt sociopath from office…but the people voted it down. (Probably to their regret, now)
Quinn has a long history of reform and fighting corruption and has been essentially shut out of the Blagojevich Administration, as a result. He is untouched by this scandal. He is not into cronyism.
I suggest you do your homework on this.

I hope they don’t have a special election which will cost even more money. The government can’t do anything cheaply. Why not just follow the law concerning appointing a new senator and be done with it.
However, you can’t convince me that the Lt. Governor won’t appoint exactly who the party wants him to appoint. Reid doesn’t have to come right out and say he doesn’t want a special election. By default, it won’t happen if the current governor resigns and Quinn appoints a new senator.
“BTW, the last governor was a Republican and he is in jail for corruption. So it’s NOT a safe assumption the people would vote in another.” It’s not a safe assumption, until it is and it’s as good a senario as any other. Anything could happen in a special election. The democrats will want to minimize the chances of a republican winning a special election. And the best way for that to happen is not to have one.

Can Michelle explain why she thinks this governor should be allowed to choose the next senator? Of course not. Again Michelle shoots off her uneducated and ill-informed mouth before she knows the facts. Christians always want to judge before they understand don’t they? Michelle you are as pathetic a person as I’ve ever encountered.

Actually Boris, Michelle didn’t express any desire for the governor to be able to appoint Obama’s senate successor. Also, your statement “christians always want to judge before they understand”, has no validity whatsoever. By neccessity you would need to know all Christians and be aware of all their decisions in order to make that claim. I can say with certainty that you know neither.

That’s no surprise. It’s how she blogs.

Marcus,
You said: Actually Boris, Michelle didn’t express any desire for the governor to be able to appoint Obama’s senate successor.
Boris says: By supporting an opposing view by default she certainly did. Your nit-picking is dismissed.
You said: Also, your statement “christians always want to judge before they understand”, has no validity whatsoever.
Boris says: Wrong again. One absolutely cannot call oneself a Christian unless they prejudge other people and other things according to their absurd holy book. Strike two.
You said (and misspelled): By neccessity you would need to know all Christians and be aware of all their decisions in order to make that claim. I can say with certainty that you know neither.
Boris says: Yes, but since neither of us knows or has ever met a Christian who does NOT fit my description you would have to know every Christian in the world to back up YOUR claim. So strike three – you’re out!

I’m sure the Democrats would want another Democrat to replace a Democrat who was elected to that Senate seat. It’s hardly unreasonable of them. And you can;t tell me that if the Republicans were in power it wouldn;t got the other way. In fact, a Republican Governor appointed a Republican to fill the late Everet Dirksen’s seat when he died. Wonder if Michele would have objected to that?
But while Michele was taking shots at Harry Reid, she ignored the fact that Illinois’ remaining Senator and also a Democrat, Dick Durbin, has called for a special election and President-Elect Obama has expressed no opposition to that proposal.

I feel ashamed to read the transcripts that were made in public. I mean I know such conversations would be common is what are usually adult-orientated films, but to see a politician say and do such sleazy stuff is disgraceful.
And as for a special election, my guess that the disgraced Ill. Governor will not resign- because his record shows an selfish purpose for himself and only himself- and his wife.
So if it comes down to the fact that both the state House and Senate has to strip Gov. Blago of his power and then impeach him next year, then it may have to come down to a sorry end. And for the record, Jesse Jackson Jr really has to prove to show that he didn’t send anyone promising millions in return for a Senate seat.
That type of corruption is one of the worst sins God has warned us against. Jesse Jr should know; just ask his father.

Boris…actually I’ve met several Christians who don’t fit your description of individuals that ‘pre-judge’. Since I have already pointed out the flaw in your argument, it is by an act of your will and not logic, that you refuse to acknowledge that it only takes one that doesn’t fit your description to bring your house of cards down around your ears. Again, I will restate it, you have to know them all from the very first christian up to the christians of today, and be aware of all their decisions in order give any serious credibility to your blanket statement. Your argument still stands as illogical and without merit. I, on the other hand, don’t need to know them all, I only need to know one.
“Boris says: Yes, but since neither of us knows or has ever met a Christian who does NOT fit my description you would have to know every Christian in the world to back up YOUR claim. So strike three – you’re out!”
With that statement you are, again, the proverbial dog chasing his own tail. Since you have insufficient information concerning the people I’ve met, again, your statement is illogical. There are no ‘strikes’ in our conversation since you haven’t found the ballpark yet.
I will give you this one, yes, I am guilty of misspelling words.

Marcus,
You could not be more wrong. By definition if one does not prejudge others according to the paper idol Christians worship in because they have no real God, then they cannot be a Christian. Sorry to burst your fundamentalist bubble. Case closed.
