What’s a “sea kitten” you might ask? It’s the new cute and cuddly name that PETA wants us to call fish so that we can propagandize our children into not eating them:
People don’t seem to like fish. They’re slithery and slimy, and they have eyes on either side of their pointy little heads–which is weird, to say the least. Plus, the small ones nibble at your feet when you’re swimming, and the big ones–well, the big ones will bite your face off if Jaws is anything to go by.
Of course, if you look at it another way, what all this really means is that fish need to fire their PR guy–stat. Whoever was in charge of creating a positive image for fish needs to go right back to working on the Britney Spears account and leave our scaly little friends alone. You’ve done enough damage, buddy. We’ve got it from here. And we’re going to start by retiring the old name for good. When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it’s time for a serious image makeover. And who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?
This is so stupid that if it wasn’t on PETA’s website I would have thought it was a spoof.

Ooh, fishy snuggums, oo are just wike a wittle kitty?
PETA would be a much more effective organization if it weren’t for its main liability, the fact that it’s PETA.

NPR has been reporting for years that we could see the end of fish and seafood in 50 years’ time.

More recently, Atlantic bluefin tuna seems to be on the verge of extinction:

I’m not a PETA supporter … but I like eating fish – yeah, I’m a fish-eater, what’s it to ya?! – so, let’s conserve.

Talking rationally about the no-so-slow destruction of fisheries and the oceans’ health in general has spectacularly failed: we continue to do these things with minimal pause to consider the continuing consequences.
We have already destroyed several fisheries, including the North Atlantic cod fishery.
Maybe a change like PETA recommends will do more than the dry accounts. It certainly won’t hurt any more than doing nothing and continuing to be ignorant of what our species is doing to the oceans.

Mackerel is good food and used to be 99 cents a can, but the price has gone up and it’s harder to find in stores lately. Years ago I enjoyed swordfish, but then it disappeared, but now it’s back to a lesser degree. And what would we do without tuna and sardines?
What a variety of creatures God has made for our enjoyment!

Isn’t most commercial fishing not for human consumption? I thought most of it went for animal feed or other uses. Maybe we could cut back on that. I DO love fish.

Tom if God made all the creatures then how come 99 per cent of all animal species that have lived on the planet are now extinct. That doesn’t sound like ‘intelligent design’ to me.

I vomited just a little in the back of my throat reading that.
Thanks, I suppose.

Yes, and we all know how ‘Chicken of the sea’ has cut down on tuna consumption

I don’t eat anything that comes out of the water. Never have, never will. I also don’t eat Beef, haven’t since I was 13. I also have not consumed fast-food in years. Never felt better.
It’s not that hard to embrace a modified diet that does not leave gaping wounds in… your pocket book. Ha, bet you thought I was going to say ‘Mother Earth,’ did you? Well, maybe that is true, too.
Whatever your reason for turning away from processed foods and chemical filled crap, I believe it is the way humanity must go if we want to survive. Sustainability, Affordability and Health can go hand-in-hand. It really isn’t difficult.
I disagree with a lot of what PETA has to say, and this is no exception. Extremists of any variety leave a bad taste in my mouth. However, their messages about diet and nutrition are not completely insane.
