Richard John Neuhaus has received last rites

posted by Susan Johnson | 7:47am Thursday January 8, 2009

Sad news from the friends and family of Neuhaus:

His friends and family are keeping vigil and he was administered last rites shortly after midnight. Fr. George Rutler, who gave him the Catholic Sacrament, says that “he is not expected to live long” and suggests “that it is appropriate that prayers be offered for a holy death.”
Fr. Neuhaus has come close to this moment before and been back. If it’s his time: Go in peace.

The world is losing a brilliant and prolific writer. Please join me in praying that the Lord might yet give him more time on earth and if not, that he might find peace and rest for his soul in communion with his Lord and Savior.

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Wonderful man, and an intellect that is all too rare today.
Two men who reinvigorated my Catholic faith in the last ten years: Pope John Paul II and Fr. Neuhaus.

Oh, that’s very sad. I do love his writing. “The Public Square” is the first thing I read each month in First Things.

I have delighted in Richard John Neuhaus’s writing since First Things began. His book “The Naked Public Square” was engaging and spot on. his stance on Right to Life issues will be sorely missed.

From a NCR article:
President George W. Bush cited Neuhaus more often than any other living authority. “Father Richard,” the president said then, “helps me articulate these [religious] things.”
It’s my own shortcoming that I wasn’t a fan but requiem in pace.

Neuhaus seemed like a wonderful man, but his embracing Roman Catholicism troubles me.

his embracing Roman Catholicism troubles me.
If you makes you feel any better, I’m not convinced he really did. :-)
I’m kinda with Boris, in a way: relieved for now, yet knowing I’ll see him again.
