FDA says to avoid pistachios

posted by Susan Johnson | 7:36am Tuesday March 31, 2009

More salmonella! As someone with a compromised immune system, it’s now pretty scary to get these warnings.

Federal food safety officials warned Monday that consumers should stop eating all foods containing pistachios while they figure out the source of a possible salmonella contamination.

Though, the evidence that it’s salmonella seems pretty thin:

Two people called the FDA complaining of gastrointestinal illness that could be associated with the nuts, but the link hasn’t been confirmed, Acheson said. Still, the plant decided to shut down late last week, officials said.

If they’re not sure it’s the nuts, why start a recall?

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

I just read in the Sunday paper pistachios are good for you! The “thin” nut, not fattening.
Well, they are expensive so we’ve already sworn off them ’round here.
Tell me, what about pistachio ice cream?! :-)

The FDA did not “start a recall”. The company has done a voluntary recall. The FDA suggested people stop eating the nuts until their investigation is complete. Not the same thing as a recall.

I assume you will be ignoring this warning anyway, regardless of your compromised immune system, as you made it quite clear in your Earth Hour post that you have no intention of letting the Government tell you what to do.

Michelle, pray to Lucifer for protection. Your “god” has let you down. That’s because you have been following the wrong one. Pray to the Divine Lucifer for protection and you shall be made whole.

I just heard that stores are taking pistachios off the shelve, but keeping them until it has been confirmed.
Two people are not very many. I had gastrointestinal illness from eating chocolate covered pistachios from Hawaii, but that was from eating too many at one time. Doubt I will ever eat another pistachios.

So now you suddenly believe in science? Hmmm…how convenient.
And, moonshadow, when you refer to a ‘thinning nut,’ are you talking about pistachios or our formally hefty blog author?

I’ve never known michele to be hefty. In fact, even before her illness, I told her (last summer) that I thought she was all skin & bones. I was simply paraphrasing the article in the Sunday paper.
