One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Hey Michelle, it’s your planet too. Go outside and enjoy the day, the planet, and all the little critters that fill it. Warm or cold, it the only home we have.

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.” – Genesis 1:31
A bit later on in the story, humans really screwed things up. Is it such a bad idea to try to remedy that?

I’m celebrating Earth Day as I always do when the weather permits. I’m firing up the charcoal grill and throwing a couple of steaks on it.

Perhaps the snark indicates an agreement on Michelle’s part with James Watt, who thought the world wouldn’t be around that much longer, anyway? For the rest of us proud lefties, Crunchy Conservatives, and all who think that taking care of our planet might not be such a bad thing, a very Happy Earth Day!

I agree with John, That God made heaven and earth just as he describes this process in Genesis. God has also made us stewards of this Earth. Just like he make Adam responsible for naming the animals of the Earth. He has also, required that we do our part to maintain and preserve this World and Earth as God has given it to us. God gave us dominion over the fish of the sea and the fowl of the air and every living creature that creepeth upon the Earth. Green technology should be some of the most important legislation that we pass and promote today in our World and Society. Contemplate this day and revistit the thought of a pollution free World. At least we can each start doing something each and every day. Conservation and Resource Management should be an imperative concern for all of us that live on Mother Earth. Remember its not nice to fool Mother Nature.. God Bless.

Why do some people (like Michele and anyone else who celebrated Human Achievement Hour) put taking care of their planet–their home–on the back burner? As far as we know, this is the only planet that can support life.
Come on, people–let’s show our planet some love!!!! Let’s thank Her for all that She has given us! Is that really such a bad thing? Should it be limited to those on the political left?
Happy Earth Day EVERYONE!!

I do so every day. I don’t need a special day to do so. I appreciate the earth and it’s Creator:
ESV Psalm 24:1 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, 2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

I wasn’t being snarky about wishing you guys a Happy Earth Day, I actually meant it. Though, I was being snarky about the propaganda, you guys are accomplishing your goals, scaring children into accepting your premise that the world will be destroyed in their lifetime if we don’t do something about it. I don’t the world is coming to an end or will be destroyed (so in response to your comment about James Watt, I don’t hold his view).

Um…I think this is a perfect example why I’m not celebrating Earth Day, if I thank anyone for this planet, it’s God.
But please, enjoy your day.

You know, I grew up watching the crying American Indian … and learned not to litter which, in NJ, seems to be a virtue.
This afternoon, on Monmouth St. in Red Bank, my six-year-old saw three flattened plastic soda bottles on the side of the road. He asked if he could pick them up and put them in the garbage. I didn’t see any recycling cans so I let him put them in the garbage.
Red Bank is lovely and filthy-dirty at the same time.
It’s Administrative Assistants’ day too! Go hug your church secretary.

Mother Earth has been good to us…and too many of us haven’t appreciated her like we should have. All of us need to remember that this is the only Mother we all share on this planet…and she needs all the help we can give her.
Earth Day should be every day….

Earth Day should be everyday, it is good that there is at least one day to spread awareness. Here are some suggestions on what you can do to help the Earth: http://www.toptentopten.com/topten/things+to+do+on+earth+day, you can add your own suggestions.

congratulations on your education efforts.
I remember as a kid listening to radio reports of Three Mile Island. I had a vague sense of Love Canal. I remember being fearful for the environment and the world.
There’s always some apocalyptic scenario to latch onto in American culture.
As far as propaganda goes, I’m grateful that it kept me from smoking cigarettes or drinking & driving.

Michelle: And how does celebrating Earth Day do that? [taking care of the planet]
How does celebrating the 4th of July make us more patriotic? How does celebrating Mother’s Day or Father’s Day make us love our parents more? How does celebrating Christmas make us more appreciative of Christ’s Incarnation, or celebrating Easter make us more appreciative of his Resurrection? How does celebrating anything help us do anything?
Some would say that an occasional celebration helps remind us of things we should always be doing and be aware of. Some of us would even be bold to say this might apply to Earth Day, too.
I wasn’t being snarky about wishing you guys a Happy Earth Day, I actually meant it. Though, I was being snarky about the propaganda
Well, what the sincerity giveth, the snark taketh away. It would be as if an atheist wished a Christian a Merry Christmas, and immediately followed that by saying, “Hey, good job you guys have done convincing people to be cowed by an imaginary Sky God!” Do you see the analogy?
you guys are accomplishing your goals, scaring children into accepting your premise that the world will be destroyed in their lifetime if we don’t do something about it.
I don’t think the goal of anyone is necessarily to scare kids or anyone else. I do remember that as a kid in the 70′s I was afraid that nuclear war would destroy us, though, and I don’t doubt that many kids after 9/11 fear terrorist attacks. In a mass-media society, kids are probably always going to be scared of something or other. I do think it is important for people to be aware that there are many serious environmental issues. Moreover, I don’t necessarily believe the world is coming to an end soon as a result of the human race’s bad stewardship.
However, there are a lot of things we simply don’t know, and it is just as blind to assume that the environment will go on and be just dandy no matter what we do as it is to assume imminent apocalypse. There are plenty of people across the ideological spectrum who are concerned that we are not doing all we can to improve our stewardship of the earth, and it is in my mind unfair to implicitly label all such people as hippie-dippie tree-hugger types who are easily dismissed.
You might check this out over at the Crunchy Conservative blog here at Beliefnet.

I have made frequent visits to a nation that was full of folks you would slap the label “lefties” on…the former USSR.
Ironically, because the Communist Party valued industrial production over environmental concenrs, they jailed all those “tree-huggers” Michele disdains and dismisses.
The place is an appalling mess of toxic waste, polluted water, nxious air, and in the area where I did humanitarian work…radioactive contamination thanks to Chernobyl.
Even my brother, who is so right wing he makes Limbaugh look like a Leninist gurdgingly admitted that, “They could have used a lot more tree huggers.”

Chuckles at the news story…
as Michele is chided for burning light bulbs for an extra hour…
President Obama burned more that 9,000 gallons of fuel on…earth day. Save the planet, fly more miles?

very well stated, turmarion!
robert morwell, i salute you on the car choice! i look forward to reading more on what you’ve found.
ellen, true to form, attack obama and not some idiotic republican (who isn’t the president) for dumping even more carbon into the atmosphere. i certainly never faulted bush for flying air force one (except for the time when he did the “fly over” of the hurricane katrina aftermath).
myself? i left the lights off, and the radio and television unplugged and went outside and planted trees and worked in my garden.
“congratulations on your education efforts”
why, thank you. despite conservatives’ efforts to poison the well of information from the scientific community, and despite conservatives’ constant obstructionism to protect this only earth that we have, our children seem capable of understanding what you refuse to.

I did not attack President Obama, I merely noted the double standard of liberals who comment here.
an hour of lights vs 9,000 gallons of jet fuel. Of course you all believe that Michele is the bad guy for using an hour of electricity and of course you all believe that noting the fuel usage of our president must be an “attack”.
Do you think that the fuel usage of President Obama on “earth day” is a good example?
