I got bad news from my surgeon today…

posted by Susan Johnson | 2:14pm Wednesday April 22, 2009

He’s going to recommend that my oncologist give me 9 chemo treatments instead of 6. He wants me to have a negative CA-125 for a couple chemo treatments before they stop giving me chemo. Bummer! This means that I’m not doing as well as I thought I was.
I was so happy to be half done with the treatments and was scheduled to be done before summer break but now I’ll be going into July and won’t be able to do as much as I wanted to do this summer and may have a hard time scheduling our vacation.
But it wasn’t all bad news, the surgeon said that everything looked good after my examine and I could start working out again. I might go to the gym tonight and start lifting weights again. I bet I’ll be starting with 10 lbs on all the stations :-) and 5 minutes on the treadmill.

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Sorry to hear things aren’t going as you hoped. However you did say the surgeon said everything looked good after your examine and you could start working out once again. Good news …and you did well on the education front! 2 positives to counter the not so good news about the chemo. Hang in there, Michele. You’ve come this far…

I’d start with 5 pounds…
Keep with it…you could look at it as good news – they’re keeping up with it!
With Art, they just gave up.

I am sorry you have to have extended treatments however it sounds as though the doctor has a positive outlook. I hope the best for you and those close to you . You will be in my prayers. Thank you for your work Pappy

Michele, they haven’t given up…they just want to get it all the first time around. This is good.

It probably means they expect a complete removal of the cancer. If so, that is a good thing.

I know it’s frustrating and disappointing to have to slog through what amounts to more “therapeutic poisoning” but hang in there.
It does sound like they’re just trying to be as thorough as possible and that is a wise course.

Having been through cancer myself, I can tell you sometimes it isn’t about you, it’s about the doctor’s “comfort zone” about the outcome of your treatment. It’s about their success more than your health–but I always have the consarned treatments anyway. So I hope you hang in there and get past it all, if a little later.
