Obama spending less on HIV/AIDS than promised

Yet another campaign promise broken:

Leading disease experts said President Barack Obama's 2010 budget proposal for global health falls far short of what is needed to combat the deadly twin epidemics of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Details on global health spending were released by the White House today, and a preliminary analysis indicates the President is proposing only $165 million in additional funding for bilateral AIDS as well as the US contribution to the Global Fund. "This proposal is even worse than we had feared. With this spending request, Obama has broken his campaign promise to provide $1 billion a year in new money for global AIDS, and he has overlooked the growing threat of tuberculosis," said the Center for Global Health.

[...]

This unfolding health crisis could quickly spread, as people who stop treatment become far more infectious. Treatment disruption can also lead to drug-resistance, an extremely expensive and potentially deadly development.

Obama just found ways to cut billions of dollars in wasteful spending (btw, I thought it was funny that he ordered his lapdogs (the WH press) to stress the "significant" nature of the cuts), why not take some of that money and spend it on HIV/AIDS? The AIDS epidemic in Africa is out of control and they need all the help they can get.

Speaking of promises broken, read this inside look at how Obama used the 9/11 and Cole families.

Your Name said, "Who'd have guessed that the Eeeeevil "Bushitler", the supposed racist hick from Texas, would be more caring about AIDS in Africa than than our current half-African American president?"

Michele quoted, "preliminary analysis indicates the President is proposing only $165 million in additional funding for bilateral AIDS as well as the US contribution to the Global Fund."

The above statement says Obama is proposing more than Bush. Obama complimented Bush on several occasions for his AIDS efforts.

I have read several different articles today about the HIV/AIDS funding. None of the articles provided a clear breakdown on what was being reduced and what was still in the budget. There are multiple budget lines under the AIDS section.

One thing to remember, Obama presents a budget, who knows what it will look like when Congress approves it.

I am sure that Obama does not want to cut AIDS spending.

$165 Million in additional funding is not a funding cut. Yes he promised a billion, before the current financial crisis. Thank you congress critters of both parties.

RE: the complaint that Bush was "more caring about AIDS in Africa than than our current half-African American president?" Of course if he tried to spend money overseas, the right wing here would complain that he wasn't doing anything for Americans. You need to get over the fact that your guy lost. At least now he's trying to do something for the health care of Americans unlike Bush who gave money to the pharma guys (Medicare Plan B) and absolved his party of any connection to science

The money will instead go to helping the Catholic Church abort babies around the world; of course, for the cause of serving social justice and helping the poor.

STD cases on the rise! Hope Obama can take some meansures to lower STD rate.
A friend of mine who works for the largest STD dating == Positivefish. com == told me that the new subscribers have increased 30% over 2008. Rising STD rate sparks online dating sites.

"By the time 2012 comes, the national regret and collective ousting of him from office will be so great a DUMMYCRAT won't see the inside of the White House other than by invitation for at least 2 decades."

dream on, sister. weren't you making similar (and wrong) predictions in 2006 and 2008? :D

yesss... republican losses are so sweet and savory... keep them coming!

a large reason that the aids epidemic is out of control is because bush focused too much on abstinence and not on condom use where his appropriated money was to by doled out. http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/articleview/3162/1/161

so bush knew how to spend money, but he didn't know how to spend it effectively. obama is still increasing funding by 2% and trying to better use the funding that is available. that's doing the best with what's currently available.

of course in the mushy minds of conservatives, no matter what he does here they will attack. if he spends less but more effectively, he's breaking a promise. if he spends more, they'll complain that he's spending too much. that's why any criticism of obama from this group is just laughable.
