The American Patriot’s Bible

OMH! This is so wrong on so many levels. There is nothing about America in the Bible and this is clearly a confusion of the kingdom of this world with the kingdom of God. Save your money, rightwing Christians!

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Didn’t you read the verse about Jesus instructing us to go kill the Indians and the Immigrants? This is so sad and messed up.

Oh, dear! I MUST agree. There is more I’d love to say about this, but I’ll bite my tongue – or I guess it is “hold back my fingers”.
Hi Michelle! It’s been a long time since I’ve connected with you, and I just wanted you to know that you are in my prayers.

Yeah I can’t wait for Thomas Nelson to come out with the Southern Pride Bible this fall. Confderate flag design in tri-tone imitation leather!

I can’t believe this, you’ve made two posts with which I completely agree. I guess you’re becoming a liberal. Good for you.

I agree, too. This must be about the tenth time. I’m not sure which one of is changing, Michelle.

Hey! I remember you! Thanks for the prayers, I’m really in need of prayer now that I’m trying to get through the last two treatments of chemo and my final final :-)

Sorry but I’m long way from liberal (my position on this is the same as it’s been for years — long before I started blogging). You have to be the one that’s changing — maybe you’re becoming a free-thinking Christian ;-)

“Patriotism” is often the most pernicious form of idolatry.
I’m with you on this one Michelle.
I dearly love my country, but I only worship my God.

Please, don’t encourage them!
“‘Patriotism’ is often the most pernicious form of idolatry.”
Amen! Though, I can think of a few more that are as pernicious.

I’d go for picking one up in a bookstore (I mean literally, not buying, ‘picking one up’ from the shelf) and flipping through it, to see what they mean. If its about the decoration (flag on the front or something), do they single out specific verses? Is this about the idea of America becoming some kind of ‘chosen’ country? Which some groups do seem to support.

Karen,
“‘picking one up’ from the shelf) and flipping through it,”
Sounds like a good idea. Neither Michele nor anyone else explained what they find objectionable.
The description indicates the subject is how the Bible influenced US history.

Heres the youtube video promoting it:

I commented on it on my blog and would love to hear what other people think about my response. My blog is:

This seriously scares me, its one thing to love your country but this is going way too far. This odes nothing but confuse the issue. Suddenly American war heroes are placed on the same level as Bible characters (they mix in stories of american heroes with biblical stories). I just think that it’s extremely dangerous and am discouraged that a well known publisher like Thomas Nelson would put this out.

I don’t see the acclaimed ESV Study Bible on bookstore shelves so, unless this edition becomes inexplicably, wildly popular, one ain’t gonna be able to waltz into a store and check it out before buying. Not in this economy.
I suspect the edition might be along the lines of this one which I have but don’t really use.

I am a first time visitor to this blog. This is a very well written edition of the bible that outlines how Christianity has been a centerpiece in our country’s 230+ years.
From my reading it does not claim a superiority but a majority in thought and framework.
Some of the thoughts on this blog have been very narrow and intollerant.

Alright, my local bookstore has three ESV Study Bibles, all shrink-wrapped so I can’t peruse. Anyway, I wouldn’t feel right removing the cellophane without being certain of buying.
Didn’t see any editions of this Bible there … yet. I’ll keep checking …
that its military victories were evidence of divine favor. This has been a staple of pagan religion from the start.
The what, now, of pagan religion?!
Y’all realize how violent American culture (I didn’t say “society”) is? Part & parcel.

Here is follow-up posting from Greg Boyd detailing just a few of the outrageous and idolatrous commentaries in this bible.
http://www.gregboyd.org/blog/the-patriots-bible-really/
GSJ- have you really read this bible? And you honestly think Christianity has been a center piece of our country’s history? If it has, then it has only served to further desecrate the name of Christ.
I will quote Fredrick Douglas (as boyd did in his posting):
“Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference – so wide, that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt and wicked…I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity.”
