Twittering in Church

posted by Susan Johnson | 8:37am Monday May 4, 2009

I would find this so distracting and I’m not sure how edifying it would be to read what other people are saying while I’m trying to listen to the sermon. Can’t we just sit and listen for a change and not have to comment on everything?

ESV James 1:19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;

Speaking of Twitter, I now have an account on Twitter. Here’s my…um…handle?…whatever: MicheleMcGinty. I haven’t done much with it yet but I plan to (mostly I’ve been posting links to interesting things I’ve found on the Internet and occasionally I’ll remember to post what I’m doing). I was surprised when I started it that I had a follower right away and now I have two. I’m really popular, huh? :-)

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

The Catholic Church is the only thing which saves a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age. (GK. Chesterton)

I visited Mars Hill Church (Seattle) and folks had their laptops out before the service – they put them away once the service started, but even that was distracting. Now, text messages are invited during the service for the Q&A afterward. I think I’d find that very distracting.

I’m glad that theft isn’t a concern. My kids are enough of a distraction, and I feel strange bringing in my own prayer book.
I read your, what is it, conversion story, Chesterton. Long, but very touching. God bless.
