“The Two Calvins”

posted by Susan Johnson | 8:26am Sunday July 12, 2009

Here’s a article on Calvin by Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary. He’s the author of “Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport: Making Connections in Today’s World” which is an excellent book about trying to make Calvinism (and Calvinists :-) understandable to society. I think his article on Calvin reflects what he wrote in the book.
He also wrote “When the Kings Come Marching in: Isaiah and the New Jerusalem” which is also an excellent book that really gets you thinking about the age to come and its impact on today.
He wrote a third book which I have but haven’t read yet but looks like its along the same vein as the other two: “He Shines in All That’s Fair: Culture and Common Grace.”

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Wow. Three books about Calvin and Hobbes written by a seminary president? Who knew. I’ll have to check them out sometime.

Wow! How do you find time to read all these books, Michelle?
I come home, get into a funk, and generally watch television, although TV viewing is not recommended by Paul Tripp or the other Calvinists at Tenth Presbyterian, of which I am a member by God’s grace, but I am trying to twist away from it. So I experience Las Vegas from “CSI;” I’m glad someone is trying to bridge the gap…
Paul Tripp is an excellent preacher, especially on I Peter. Come and join us for evening worship this coming Sunday night at 6:15!
