What does the left have against Down Syndrome babies?

posted by Susan Johnson | 8:11pm Friday July 3, 2009

I think this really tells you how much the left hates Sarah Palin (here’s a screen shot before it was taken down). HuffPo took it down, which is commendable but you have question why anyone would think it was appropriate to knock her because she has a child with special needs. I didn’t know that the left had taken to calling them “retards.” How very un-PC!

Update: You can find the HuffPo statement here.
Updated again to link to the apology of the writer who didn’t realize until he got an email that calling Down Syndrome children retards was offensive.

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

I’m sure Trig will have more brainpower than his mother ever will.
God save this country if something like her ever becomes president.

Yes, based upon this article, and perhaps a few others, we can safely assume and confidently prolaim that the entire “Left” (whomever that may be) “hates Downs children.”
I think the article Michele has pointed to is tacky, crass and tasteless. The “retard” remark is utterly despicable.
Though I think Palin would be an unmitigated disaster as President or Vice-President, I believe she will be a good mother to this young child and I applaud her for giving him birth.
I also think the claim that the left hates Downs chldren is self-rigtheous and stereotypical.

So, Michelle, in your response to Brent above, Sarah Palin is a victim? Assuming that, of what is she a victim?

I asked my mother who is a special education teacher and the cousin of a Down’s Syndrome person and she says Down’s Syndrome individuals do have mental retardation. However, in this culture, many words like “moron”, “retarded” have been taken from their original language and are used as insults…which does seem to be the idea and usage in that screen capture…it is tasteless and crass.
What’s also tasteless and crass is Michele’s assumption that all on the “left” think insulting special needs populations is okay.

“Though I think Palin would be an unmitigated disaster as President or Vice-President”
We never have to worry about this after yesterday’s resignation. The Daily Beast is reporting about a MAJOR upcoming investigation involving SBS, the company that Palin awarded a $13M contract to build a hockey arena, and the possibility that the company provided the materials for Sarah and Todd Palin’s luxury home around the same time. The same house that Todd Palin said he built with the “help of a few buddies.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

It’s worth noting that the offending article was quickly removed from the Huffington Post. (Something Michele neglcted to point out.) Since most of its readership is comprised on people Michele describes as “lefties” one can only assume that so many of them found it disgusting that they forced its removal.

Whoops! My bad. I see now that Michele did add to her original article. I apologize for missing the newly added lines. I caught them just after posting.
Mea culpa.
But it does prove the point that “lefties” didn’t approve of the article.

It should be pointed out that it was “lefties,” myself included, who got it taken down so quickly. I would also point out that trying to score points against “the left” dishonestly is a crass exploitation of the very people you claim offense for.

I personally don’t get what this has to do with liberals or conservatives. The way I see it the author is a mean spirited cruel person who really must think this way about people with special needs.
Nothing more. As the mom of a great kid with special needs, I find this kind of junk daily. Ben Stiller is a bigger offender but I don’t know or care about his politics, just like I don’t know or care about his religion. I just put him in the loser category, nothing more.
