Dan Barker to James White: Don’t quote me

posted by Susan Johnson | 3:58pm Sunday September 27, 2009

Pretty funny that Dan Barker didn’t want his book, Godless, quoted during the debate. So much for his confidence in the veracity of his own book which was on sale at the debate :-) (via)

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

White is obnoxious. His approach is ad hominem. Maybe Barker should have opened to give White something to rebut instead of Barker’s book.

Anyone familiar with debate will realize that Barker is completely off his rocker to suggest that White can’t quote him. Why on earth wouldn’t Barker want his arguments addressed? Outrageous.
White’s approach is not ad hominem, sorry. White is doing what scholars do in debate, and that is examining the arguments.

I accept your apology, Brian.
Barker is clearly off his rocker for being an atheist, so White ought not pour salt in his wounds but ought to honor Barker’s request not to debate Barker’s book. The problem is White can’t think on his feet. Very sad.

I hadn’t heard of James White so I Googled his name and there are a bunch of people with that name. Is he the James Emery White who has the blog? He’s definitely not the basketball player.
The theism versus atheism debate now sinks to a video of a debate about the debate. It seems even more pointless than before.
Moonshadow, in what way do you feel Barker clearly of his rocker for being an atheist?

“White is obnoxious. His approach is ad hominem.”
If this doesn’t make you laugh, then you need a lesson in irony.

@ jigawatt: Are you quoting someone else or are you saying that James White’s approach is an ad hominem fallacy? If its the latter, could you please explain where he made this error?
Thanks

William,
I was quoting from Moonshadow’s first comment. If you can’t see it, click on the orange “Comments” above.

Thanks jigawatt. And you are right that is funny.
@ Moonshadow: For your information Dan Barker did open the debate, so obviously you haven’t actually heard it. And judging from your other comments (“The problem is James White can’t think on his feet.”) you probably haven’t heard ANY of James White’s debates. Regardless of what your opinion might be about his demeanor or his position on the topic, James White is absolutely without question one of the best scholarly debaters in the business. He always does thorough, competent research on the subject matter and his oponent.
Mr. Barker, on the other hand, often proves himself to be completely inadequate as a debater, incompetent as a researcher, and ineffectual as a speaker. His debate record proves that he has no real interest in his topics. After listening to many of his debates I am left with the impression that he does this simply for the publicity. The real difference between the two is that Mr. White actually has an interest (and an education) in the subject matter being debated. Whereas Mr. Barker just wants to be a celebrity and the only way that he can attract attention to himself is by playing this “preacher-turned-atheist” role.

That is well known that cash can make people autonomous. But how to act if one doesn’t have cash? The only one way is to try to get the home loans or just collateral loan.
