Just hours agothis was the prevailing wisdom:
According to GameBids.com, which tracks the progress of Olympic bids, President Obama’s decision to appear in Copenhagen and give a speech to the IOC was boosted Chicago’s chances for winning.
Evidently, Chicago’s chances of winning must have been way low because not even Obama could improve them, Chicago lost in the first round, receiving the least amount of votes despite the stirring and persuasive oratory skills of Obama.
Before Obama flew to Copenhagen, everyone was assured that the fix was in and Chicago would win their bid for the Olympics because when Putin and Brown put in an appearance, they’re countries won the chance to host the games. Other heads of state realized this as well and put in an appearance:
Other cities also have their country’s leaders attending the meeting to support their bids.
Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and Spanish President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero are planning to push the case for Madrid, according to the Madrid 2016 bid committee.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was expected to be joined by soccer legend and Brazilian native Pele as they advertise the benefits of a Rio Games.

Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, just two weeks into the job, also planned to be at the vote to demonstrate the government’s full backing of the Tokyo bid, the bid committee said.
Not a good year to try and play the head of state card.
Well, all I can say is this: bwahahahahahahahahahahaha! So much for our improved standing in the world. Now, the big question is: how does the left blame this on Bush?
I wonder if the Olympic committee wasn’t too thrilled that Michelle Obama thought it was such a sacrifice to be there.
BTW, can’t say I’m too upset because now the graft will not be flowing in Chicago. What will the slum lords do with their properties now?
Update: This is so funny, the CNN anchor is in shock.
Updated again: Check out the shock on the face of the people of Chicago when they found out that Obama wasn’t the miracle worker they thought he was.

This is awful! the first paragraph makes no sense and it’s just sounds like umm…your a hater. it’s an ugly look. And notice your the first person to try and put a “Blame Bush” theory that you evidently feel this administration has, however theres not need to even say lets blame Bush the record speaks for it’s self evidently those who don’t understand this dont’ read! and by reading your first paragraph I can see how that might apply here.
Try to be a little more Bias this story will only turn the smart people who read things on this site off. ewwww…

I must forward this so people can see how ugly people can be Michelle Obama is gorgous And maybe she felt she would try for her city but knew her chances were slim. But just like standing behind your favorite football team you support them anyways. Again Michelle is gorgous! Oh I just saw your picture..i”m sorry I understand now.

Such a small person you are.
Obama: Major fail!
Let’s see…there was a vote and Chigama got the least amount of votes. The O team must have failed to get Acorn over there to work their magic on the vote process. Oh wait. Acorn is too busy here helping child prostitution and shuttering offices.

you’re coming unglued…
this is absolutely unbelievable, michele. even i am aghast at your hatred on display here. why would anyone try to pin this on bush? it’s not one of the legacy problems that bush left for the next administration to clean up.
you’re increasingly more bitter and wicked than when i first stumbled onto this right-wing political blog. hanging out at hotair isn’t doing you good. you’re transforming into the same vile sludge that comment there. is this why your fellow blabbing chicks no longer post here with you?
i’m not sure what “world standing” has to do with the olympic host. perhaps you don’t really understand the spirit of the games.
it’s an honor to host the olympics and to behave the way you are now, seems unamerican and unpatriotic to say the least.
this was simply a case of the committee choosing a different place to host the games. not everyone, including the committee, is as petty as you and malkin to consider that either the president or the first lady as the reason. that’s a lame assumption on your part.
too bad, it would have brought revenue to our economy and even some jobs, if only for a short term.

Gee, how did I know that Michelle would jump on this and do her happy dance?
Meanwhile, she ignored the fact that an agreement has been struck with the Iranians to ship three quarters of their nuclear materials to Russia and France where they will be processed into fuel rods for a reactor that is used for medical research. The material would not be usable in weapons after it is processed.
If this the whole game? Of course not. But it is already far more than eight years of sabre-rattling got us.
So, while Michele does her little jig out of contempt for Obama and Chicago, some progress has been made on the nuclear weapons front…and we didn’t even bomb anyone. But then. you wouldn’t expect her to celebrate such a victory, when she can chortle over the loss of the Olympics. HJer concern over Iran is trumped by a desire to dis Obama.
BTW…One of the concersn that was raised was that foreigners have found going thru American Customs to be increasingly unpleasant. Stories like this 2007 account are widespread overseas. (But don’t expect Michele to know that because you can’t trust those foreigners)
Officials at JFK detained an Icelandic tourist for days — all because she had overstayed her tourist visa 10 years ago. Erla Osk Arnardottir Lillendahl, 33, is not happy about the treatment she received upon arriving at JFK — she’s even called the experience the most humiliating of her life.
Lillendahl was arrested at JFK and interrogated for two days. During that time, she was held in a cell, had her hands and feet chained, was not permitted to call relatives and was even denied food and drink for a period of time. Now the Government of Iceland has asked US Ambassadors to explain the incident.
According to Iceland’s foreign minister Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, “In a case such as this, there can be no reason to use shackles. If a government makes a mistake, I think it is reasonable for it to apologize, like anyone else.”
Frankly, I would have been surprised if the games hadn’t gone to Rio. Never could understand why people thought Chicago had the inside track. As the Brazilian president noted, the game have never been in South America and it’s about time. I agreed with him, even though I live just a couple hundred miles from Chicago.

No one is blaming Bush for Chicago not getting the Olympics. Chicago is to blame — they didn’t convince the committee that they had the best place. It is what it is. While it would have been great for Chicago to have those billions of dollars, Rio (and Madrid) has much more to offer and did a better job with their presentation.
Monday morning quarter-backing says Obama should have played a lesser role in this, but Chicago is his hometown, it was understandable. But the crazies on right are now claiming “he failed on the world stage” which is nonsense. Although aren’t those on the right always saying they don’t care what the rest of the world thinks about us?? Obama is very much respected on world stage, much more so than Bush was.
Michele, take a deep breath and quit trying to make this into more than what it is.

Way to display your true character. A number of people in my family and where I am a member had expended a great deal of energy trying to get this bid because they believed it would help the city. Despite your uneducated impressions of the city, this would have brought jobs to a city that really needs help. Maybe we do have some bad apples but so does everywhere else as you should know.
As a Chicagoan, I find this all to be terribly offensive in light of recent events. To really understand how horrid a response this is, recall the recent death of high-school honor student Derrion Albert on the south side who got caught in the midst of a fight between rival gangs (if you can stomach it, watch the emotionally wrenching fox news report here: http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/metro/video_derrion_albert ). That happened in a neighborhood on which the Olympics would have had a tremendously positive impact: it would have brought jobs for many of the people who are drawn into gangs, it would have rebuilt desperately needed infrastructure, and it would have helped facilitate more affordable housing.
Perhaps most importantly though, the bid would have helped Chicago rebuild its horribly depleted police force, so depleted that the city isn’t even willing to release their personnel numbers to the public. That depletion is directly related to this student’s death. In the past, at dismissal time, high schools had the assistance of a much larger number of officers. Right now, though, only one or two officers are on hand, not even close to the number needed to intervene in those sorts of situation. Yes, there are other reasons that have nothing to do with the Olympics and yes there probably would have been some hitches over the next eight years, but the reality is that the Olympics would have helped my city at least do something to prevent these sorts of tragedies from happening. Apparently the right, though, sees this as an opportunity to score political points. Congrats!
I would really hope that you would take this hateful post down that essentially applauds the misfortune of someone else, including many people who are your brothers and sisters in Christ and a whole city of people who are just as American as you. We have our problems here in Chicago, but at least we tried to work together toward something positive rather than try and tear others down. Shame on you.

I’m sure Michele would not consider me a conservative, but I do have conservative friends and loved ones. They do not all come across the way you see here. Many do not deal in the facile stereotypes and partisanship that you often find here.
I may not always agree with them…but I don’t always agree with my liberal friends and loved ones, either.
I would implore you not engage in the kind of stereotyping you deplore in the right wing and in people who seem to often assume the Republican = Christian (or, at least Reformed).
Michele may be propelled to maniacal laughter and glee over what she sees as an Obama failure, but I am hoping that some of us can do at least a little better than that. It saddens me that she thinks this sort of stuff somehow represents a helpful or constructive theological stance…but then, I am not a Calvinist. Maybe this kind of gloating and glee has some basis in her theology. If so, perhaps she will actually share it. An actual theological/biblical analysis would be refreshing.
Obviously, we can disagree with her, as I often do. But I would hope we can respond with facts, thoughtful argument, and even theological/biblical reflection. Once again, it would be refreshng change.

pouty, sorry, that was a slip. when you mentioned “vote” you had me thinking back to how the right wing played their shenanigans to interfere with the 2000 presidential election. i was thinking that if you republicans still cared about our country, you might have considered meddling here too. that would still have been a no-no (just like it was in 2000), but i figure either you all just don’t love your country anymore or you don’t have the organizing power that you once did, except for the few followers that glenn beck can herd up. probably the former. after all, the right told us that criticizing the president is tantamount to hating your country.
anyway, thanks for the correction.
also, that’s a good point about the $$$. that would have been nice to bring some money to our country. amazing that so many of you conservatives were wholeheartedly against that. well, i guess you can go pop the cork on that bottle of ODS and celebrate with michele.

It sounds so personal..do you need a hug? Read over you post and try again just because you have a blog does not mean you have the right to place such false judgement on why the the games didn’t make it to Chicago. Even though they didn’t get the bid I am glad they were there, and they looked so cute! lol

From Andrew Sullivan’s “Daily Dish” we have this post from an American in Australia…
I awoke this morning in Sydney, my current home, and put on the morning news to find out that Chicago lost its bid for the Olympics. My immediate reaction, as an American, was disappointment. Obviously, when it comes to sporting events like the Olympics I want my country to win.
I then hopped online and skimmed through the blogosphere and was surprised to see the vast majority of posts on The Corner were in the form of mocking Obama for failing in his attempt to win the Olympics for Chicago. There was even an odd sense of excitement on The Corner about the fact that he lost.
Do they not realize how petty and partisan this makes them look? Its the Olympics! Not exactly a divisive political issue. Why in the world would you a) be excited that the US did not get the Olympics and b) mock Obama for trying?
Imagine if Bush tried to win the Olympics for Dallas and lost and a liberal blog was mocking him. They all would be up in arms.
National Review used to be a publication for grown ups, sad to see it has stooped to such low levels.
Sullivan added this comment:
Criticizing a president is one thing – and important. Hoping he fails – even to the point of celebrating a national loss – is a sign of partisanship that has become pathologically blind to any sense of perspective or patriotism.

As for me, I’ve never been able to understand why we would even care about a bunch of dummies running around and throwing things. Real powers have more important things to concern themselves with, so let the Olympics be important to nothing countries like Brazil.

Anyone who calls Brazil a “nothing” country clearly has no clue what they’re talking about. Brazil is one of the main emerging economic powers in the world, along with Russia, China, and India:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRIC
But go ahead. Keep pretending that other countries don’t matter and that only the US should and will be the center of the world. It will be a heck of a rude awakening when you find out that those other countries have got a lot more clout than you realized.

It has enormous natural resources, a vibrant economy that is self-sufficient in terms of energy, a growing military capability, and even its own space program.
They have nuclear energy and counld become a nuclear power, thought they have eschewed that option.

Michael Medved remarked that women’s beach volleyball is the main Olympic sport which people watch, and why not have it on the beach at Rio? Of course, leering at the beach volleyball girls is not something that Jesus Christ would do, but most of the Olympic committee is probably not Christian, and the beaches at Rio should bring sponsors….
Oak Street Beach in Chicago on Lake Michigan can’t compete with Rio.
Apparently most Chicagoans don’t want the hassle of the Olympics anyway.

If all the players follow through (an admittedly huge “if”), this could well diminish or eliminate the threat Iran poses in the nuclear arena.
