Colbert offers his very funny take on the Pope's offer to the Anglicans (he even gives us a very succinct history lesson of the original break between the churches). He has as his guest Episcopal priest, Father Randall Balmer, (author of God in the White House and Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts Faith and Threatens America
) to offer him the chance to join the "winning side." Blamer wasn't too interested, too many negatives and not enough positives (like the gospel) coming out of Rome.

BTW, Colbert has a new iPhone/iTouch app of his WORD videos for only a buck.

"I think you're mixing your cults there"
Fr. Balmer is quite a looker in his own right. A younger Michael Crawford ...
How ironic: "I'm very suspicious of any religious group ... that defines itself in negative terms"
That was pretty funny. Colbert is deliciously irreverent.
Rev. Balmer is incorrect to label the pope's move cynical: the Anglican question is not primarily a North American issue.
This priest is not really speaking on topic. He has his own agenda. That's fine but don't take what he says as gospel.
I don't know how Colbert keeps a straight face. Right at the end he slipped in this line: "Elevating gay priests. They should come to the Catholic church where there are no gay priests."
Colbert cracks me up. With Reformation Day coming up on the 31, this is quite timely.
Don't forget the facts! The pope's "initiative" is his RESPONSE to many requests from many Anglicans and very large groups of Anglicans. One of the large Anglican groups that formally requested this of the pope is the "Traditional Anglican Communion" whose membership numbers about 400,000 worldwide.
