Matt Chandler on his "personal walk"

Monday October 12, 2009

Here's some words of wisdom for those of us who are struggling, I found it encouraging, maybe you will as well: I agree with Matt Chandler that getting up early is the best time to focus on the Lord and...

That was interesting.

I'm a night person ... always have been. Even prefer evening liturgies to morning or daytime ones. Just more relaxed and focused at night, with the cares of the day ... done.

I was a night person and will revert to it sometimes. But I had to switch to being a morning person when my daughters were small. I was usually exhausted by 10:00. If I stay up now, I'm too tired to concentrate on the Bible and would just watch TV.

I have never understood this. Doing Bible study early in the morning never did anything more for me than doing it at other times of the day. I have discovered, in fact, that I am less focused early in the morning. I think it's fine to try it, but I see no distinct advantage to a 6 am study time vs. an 11 pm study time.

When I was in high school--and now that I am a youth minister--I heard/continue to hear speakers tell youth to get up at 5:30 am and do their quiet time because that's the ONLY way to do it. The implication is that you should somehow feel guilty if you don't get up at the crack of dawn for your Bible study.

We now know that teens do better when they get more sleep in the morning: http://sleepdisorders.about.com/b/2009/03/30/when-school-starts-late-teens-sleep-great.htm. Schools are in fact looking at later start times in order to accommodate this.

So why are youth leaders still pushing them to get up at 5:30 am???

Michelle, I hope your early morning venture works for you. Do what you feel that you need to do. But I won't be getting up with you!

Good for you!

But I won't be getting up with you, either.

Well, I sure hope not, because that's ridiculous. I wouldn't spend two minutes with a group that insinuated such nonsense.

But another thing I've found about a morning quiet time: it's insatiable. If I give it its head, I'd be there at least 'til after lunch. And, as much as I'd like to, I can't, cuz it's self-indulgent.

Heard it at a youth conference four or five years ago. Paraphrasing the speaker: "If you aren't getting up and doing your quiet time first thing in the morning, then you aren't doing quiet time."

Would that be like a "first fruits" thing, Tom? That's the only possible justification for it that I can come up with.

Hey y'all-
I'm late on this but I wanted to comment a bit. I was a youth pastor for two years and am now serving as a short-term (5 month) missionary in Taiwan. My quiet time is first thing in the morning. Why? That's when I'm at my best. So, I see that as a prime time to spend with the Lord. It is not the only way, but I like to pray, think, listen before the distractions of the day get going.
I think the firstfruits idea should be followed, but it is when you are at our best. Give God your best....whenever that is. I don't think we can mandate a particular time for quiet time. It doesn't make sense.
Anyway. My thoughts.
Jeff
