New Taxes Under ObamaCare

posted by Susan Johnson | 6:25pm Wednesday October 7, 2009

Well, we all knew that ObamaCare wasn’t going to be cheap. We knew that we would be paying more and here it is:

When Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus proposed taxing medical devices to raise $40 billion over the next 10 years for his health care plan, opponents started digging in and looking at what would be taxed. It turned out feminine products, like tampons, were classified as class I medical devices and thus, the “tampon tax” was born.
The backlash was quick and severe enough against the idea that the committee quickly drafted new language that would exempt those necessities from the tax, along with all other class I devices, like tongue depressors, and decided to only tax class II medical devices and higher that cost less than $100.

Here’s a list of all of the various class 2 and above devices like pacemakers, ventilators, breast pumps, mammograms, etc. that will be taxed under ObamaCare.
BTW, it turns out the taxpayers didn’t pay for the lab coats for the doctors who forgot the lab coats. Doctors for America provided the coats.

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

What proof do you have that this is true. You have just re-posted the work of someone else from the Washington Time and a list of Class Two medical devices.
The blog post at the Washington Times doesn’t even include any proof. If you want to be a credible Conservative journalist why don’t you do the work? Find the real source, find some real proof and then write about it.
Still confused about how this fits in with a Reformed perspective. Shouldn’t you be blogging about the Conservative Reformed Plan for health care… something about tort reform etc?

The CBO report on the Baucus plan is very encouraging. Among other things, the plan costs less than originally thought and would reduce the deficit by 81 billion dollars. And, it is far cheaper over the next ten years than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been (only one of which was a “necessary war”).
We’ll need that money to help fund sending 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.

nhk,
Apparently Democratic Senator Al Franken was able to find the source:
“Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., wrote in a letter to Baucus that the tax “will seriously threaten thousands of American jobs and deter innovation.” There are “many other ways to save money in health care,” he said.”

BTW, here is the bill and you can look at the taxes yourself.

And, FYI, this is not legislative language. It is preliminary as they clearly state:
“CBO and JCT’s analysis is preliminary in
large part because the Chairman’s mark, as amended, has not yet been
embodied in legislative language.” http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/CBO_Baucus_letter.pdf?sid=ST2009100704101

Won’t start a long and detracted flame war with you Ed. So, I promise to only post this one follow-up comment on top of my original.
I am not a journalist nor do I maintain a blog. I like to be informed, so thank you for the additional direction.
My point is that, for better or worse, Michele is playing the role of the journalist – a Conservative Reformed Christian journalist.
The comments and information that you and others have posted is of a higher merit than the original posting. Perhaps you should be a conservative blogger for BeliefNet and take over here?
This space should be dedicated to higher caliber of work and the aim of the journalist should be to promote a higher caliber of dialogue.

nhk, thank you for your kind response to me. It may be a first as I have posted here.
I think you may be asking Michele for too much. I have never seen here that she purports to be a journalist. Many blogs are a platform to post articles of interest to the blogger and perhaps an attempt to persuade readers.
I think in this case (this post) the thrust of the post is able to be verified by just a little research by you, me and others if we are interested in it. But to expect Michele and other non-journalist bloggers to link to all sources every time is asking a bit much, IMHO.
But again, thanks for your reply.

“We knew that we would be paying more”
gee… imagine that, healthcare isn’t free! and for it to increase over the next decade?!?! who would have expected it? maybe those who believed that the iraq war would pay for itself.
by the way, this is the baucus bill. But you can call it “obamacare” if it helps fuel your ODS fever.
in his attempts to appease conservatives, baucus has stripped practically all legislation that even looks like obama’s criterion for reform that would do any good. the baucus bill is worthless.

Ed: Actually, let me say that I, too, appreciate your input here. Meant to say it in an earlier post, but was too late. I believe you were saying that the Dems ought to quit complaining and pass the legislation they want. Agreed. While I may not agree with you, I find your comments refreshing on Michele’s blog. Don’t want to leave anyone out, I found all the comments the basis for a good discussion.
Also agree that Obamacare, whatever that means in the end, will cost money. Everything costs money. The question is what do we get out of it…if not personally, then as a county…and is it worth it? We already pay more per capita on health care. But, we don’t cover everyone and we have people going to the emergency room for routine care, which is not cost effective. Fiscal responsibility used to be a conservative value, but that has been corrupted into all taxes are evil. I don’t find that insurance companies add much to this equation. There is no real competition, which is why I would favor a public option….or much stricter regulation of the insurance companies, such as limiting profits and requiring them to drop preexisting conditions as a grounds for denial.

Whenever a new president or any other politician is selected by any hook/crook means they want to rise money from the citizen of their country…And to fulfil their tricky ideas they impose various different taxes. Similar kind of thing Obama is doing…as such health care is so expensive and after all these taxes God only knows what’s gone to happen….
