The Obama administration's war on coal
It is absolutely amazing that anyone could be surprised that Obama's admin would try to do all in it's power to curtail the production of coal: [T]he Environmental Protection Agency has put the brakes on 79 surface mining permits in...

Do you have anything that remotely relates all this to faith and belief? Or do you simply add the "Reformed" title to your blog to get religious people to read your stereotypical right-wing perspective?
I agree with Tom above - this post has NOTHING to do with faith OR religion - OF ANY KIND whatsoever. It's just typical Obama-bashing.
Michele, this sentence shows how hollow your arguments are (well, would be if you bothered making any): "it will be much worse."
Yeah, breathing clean air - that will be so much 'worse' for Americans.
What a dolt! And pretty mean-spirited for one who calls herself a 'Christian'. Where's charity in this (or any) post of yours? Where's truth?
A comment for Tom and "another opinion",
Regardless of whether or not her post has anything to do with faith or religion, why don't both of you pick up an elementary science book to learn about global warming? (oh, I forgot. It was called global warming, now it is called "climate change". The original name was re-branded when scientist realized the globe wasn't warming after all).
The climate has been changing for thousands of years. The moon has a tremendous impact on our climate and it is steadily getting further and further away from the earth. The earth's magnetic field is in the process of reversing. Gee, would this have any impact on global warming? There I go again....Gee, would this have any impact on "climate change"? Did either of you know at one time, the Sahara Desert was not a desert? "Where's the truth"?
Do some research for yourself ("where's the truth" - another opinion), instead of lapping up all the garbage put out by left-wingers.
Well said, Your Name. How about looking back a scant 34 years ago to the coming global cooling and widespread food shortages. The "experts" were very concerned if the guvment didn't act it would be too late. Oh, inconvenient facts got in the way.
http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/cooling1.pdf
I wasn't referring to climate change (OR global warming). I spoke about breathing clean air.
also, please take a look at the top of the page. You know, the part that says this blog is about "politics and current events from a Reformed perspective".
Then point out where in Michele's post there's anything that is a Reformed OR Christian perspective on what coal does to the air we breathe. Please.
Hello Michele,
I live in one of those states (West Virginia) affected by the politics of stupidity. Because of these liberal policies my brother-in-law lost his job and my sister could lose her job if these policies are not reversed. I work for the telecommunication industry in West Virgiania and we are affected because of these attacks on the coal industry.
West Virginia's economy depends on coal. Reformed Christianity stresses the virtue of labor and the importance of property and by deliberate forcing of coal companies out of business is a moral outrage.

Your "moral outrage" would be better directed to the actual industry that is destroying the air we (and our children) will breathe.
Maybe your relatives could actually join an industry that doesn't pollute the world you purport to care about so badly.
Something about being stewards of the earth. Some kinda crazy "Christian" thing I'm told.
"The original name was re-branded when scientist realized the globe wasn't warming after all"
the majority of independent, reputable scientists (and there exists supporting evidence from different fields of science) agree that the earth is warming. so, i don't know who you're talking about.

i'm guessing that you were pretty young at the time when you heard the stories and didn't understand science. your problem is that you were duped by the stories in the press regarding cooling (which was not the broad consensus among the science community) 30 years ago and have refused to listen to scientists since then.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling has some history of the science versus media hysteria that you should be able to follow. so, yes, look back 34 years ago, but pay attention to the experts. even then, there were many who believed that the world was warming, and in 30 years, there has been better science and more evidence to support them.
Would this be something that Reformed Christianity would support? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_Fossil_Plant_coal_fly_ash_slurry_spill
the majority of independent, reputable scientists (and there exists supporting evidence from different fields of science) agree that the earth is warming. so, i don't know who you're talking about.
You "man-made global warming" devotees would be humorous if the wacky pseudo science believers were not in charge. If these nuts like the major polluter Algore get their way our economy will be ruined to try and solve a problem we don't have.
Yes I was old enough in 1975 to know that this global garbage and coming famines were being taught in schools and was a major focus. Those idiots didn't know then and these idiots don't know now. I wasn't duped at all. But you libs are being duped in a major way.
I kinda miss the Arctic ice - there's not much left of it, and within 10 years, there will be year-round sea passage through what used to be locked icefields.
You on the right are, as usual, delusional about this very real threat to the earth.
Still haven't seen one iota of something approximating a "Reformed perspective" on this. What DOES the Reformed Church teach about being good stewards of the earth AND about climate change?
Rather than posting your suppositions on the topic, let's get what we've been 'promised' - this Reformed perspective. Please.
Your Name, here's a good place to start. http://www.cornwallalliance.org/
"this global garbage and coming famines were being taught in schools and was a major focus"
"global cooling" wasn't even mentioned in science in the public school that i attended. can you produce a text book from the day that was used in your school that covered cooling? how about any peer-reviewed scientific study, with broad consensus in the scientific community that supported the theory of cooling? yes, there were theories at the time that claimed a cooling planet, just as there are theories outside of the mainstream today that make the same claim. but they're not the broadly supported scientific theories by a majority of scientists. this is just ginned up bunk by righties and the coal and oil industries as a strawman.
"You 'man-made global warming' devotees would be humorous if the wacky pseudo science believers were not in charge."
i suppose that you consider yourself a true scientist, then, if you can so easily dismiss the scientific data and those in the field as pseudo scientists. yeah, you're better at it than all those career scientists.
as the true scientist, maybe you can prove all of those pseudo scientists wrong once and for all. and please, share your scientific knowledge with the rest of us!
"...scientist realized the globe wasn't warming after all"
again, who are they?
hmmm, the cornwall alliance of theologians (for the stewardship of creation) on science, versus scientists on science... i commend the alliance for wanting to do something about malaria and unsafe drinking water, but they need to leave the science debate to scientists. when they drop names like right-wing conservative politicians james dobson, james inhofe and tom coburn, their agenda clear and it has nothing to do about science except to politicize it and oppose it.
this isn't obama's war on coal, this is the right-wing war on science. pollute science with your moronic bunk for your political agenda (save the corporations, in god's name).
"West Virginia's economy depends on coal"
timothy, i empathize with your situation, but you only have local industry and yourself to blame. what happened to the belief in making your own fortunes, of making your own life better? it has devolved to blame everyone else for your problems. i don't see how you can blame your problems on liberal policies since your state politicians, even though some are democrats, are far from liberal and your state didn't fare any better during the 8 years when bush was in office.
here in colorado, we have a progressive governor who has taken the initiative on clean energy industry. new jobs are coming to this state because we see the benefits of inviting those companies here. solar, hydro, wind, and even natural gas are growing industries. it's a huge mistake to tie the state's entire economy on a single (and limited) resource. however, west virginia's unemployment is not as bad as the nation's and there are prospects out there for you and your family. petition your local government to look for other job creators (http://www.coalriverwind.org/) and income.
One piece at a time. I'm as much a scientist as Nobel winner Algore. You a climate scientist?
so you are a scientist! i'm sorry, lea, my impression of you was that you were a bible-thumping, creationist and right-wing fundamentalist. my sincere apologies.
am i a climatologist? no. i'm a scientist in a different field. however, as a graduate of the university of colorado, i stay informed of the scientific research done at NCAR (they're just down the road, you know) and NOAA and NASA since CU does so much work and research in conjunction with them. it's like local news here.
i'll tell you this: for scientists, this is about the science and not any political agenda of either party. as science continues to improve and more data is collected, more and more of the greatest scientific minds agree that the planet is on a warming trend that will continue to get worse because of co2 in the atmosphere that we are contributing to.
the science goes beyond just climatology and our political and geographic boundaries. the evidence is found in various sciences, and it's global, as is the consensus of scientists who understand that we are adding to the problem through the burning of oil and coal.
to them, the question isn't "is the earth warming?", it's "what do we do about it?"

but enough about these "wacky pseudo science believers"... tell us your scientific theory and how it refutes these groups of career scientists.
oops, my apologies again. you said you're not a scientist, just as al gore is not a scientist.
well, i don't know why you mention al gore and his nobel prize. maybe you could elaborate on that as well.
Algore, global warming, "Inconvenient Truth" all in the same sentence. Nuf said.
But let me rephrase: Idiot (or former VP), global alarming and Inconvenient Lies (see an actual court has shown them to be lies).
Here's an idea: All who think man is causing too much co2 to be in the atmosphere...hold your breath...go ahead...do your part.
Idiocy run amok on the left.
i see... you have nothing.
lies? really, where's your proof? political, a bit alarmist possibly. after all, he is a politician and not a scientist. but again, scientists agree that gore got nearly all of the science correct. is that why you go after gore and not the science?
sure, it's easy for you to call gore names, but you're not qualified to dispute the evidence and the majority of scientists. typical.
let me rephrase: ignoramus (lea), reality denier, flat-earther and fundie, you need a real education before opening your mouth on such matters that are beyond your limited understanding.
Oh I got plenty. I'm not going to wast much time on you. You have your head stuck in the sand of HuffPo and Algore types for info. Until you are willing to make an honest inquiry into the science I'd just be wasting time I can better spend lobbying people who matter in the climate debate.
So I'm not going to do your homework for you. But, as a teaser here is one place. Ease on over there and get in a debate with then. That would be fun to watch. As I said earlier, I'm not a scientist. This guy is and has the bona fides. So jump on in and let us know how that turns out.
http://landshape.org/enm/discredited-agw/
lea,
Wrong again, I see. No, ai did not rely on "HuffPo" NOR on "Al Gore [corrected spelling] types". ai actually cited scientific sources, to whit ...
www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/upsDownsGlobalWarming.html
www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/globalwarming/home.html
www.ncar.ucar.edu/research/climate/now.php
www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/science_and_impacts/science/global-warming-faq.html
Whereas you cited nothing but one researcher with whom you happen to agree.
Hence, you lose.
Do better!
Even as the people rejoiced at this good news, coal barons trembled in their temples of black gold. There are many ways to mine coal besides blowing up the environment. But the question is whether Mr.Obama will turn his back on the mountains, the people and his own integrity.
