Video: SNL finally nails Obama

Absolutely amazing that they have finally seen that there is comedy gold in the terrible job Obama is doing as president. The skit is of a joint press conference between Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao (content warning, it is risque):

One of their funniest skits to date. Next they need to do a skit on the jobs summit, they could mention the various summits he has had that didn't produce any results, they could also do a skit on his inability to make decisions.

Penn Jillette: "I don't respect people who don't proselytize"

Great quote from Jillette (who is an atheist, though evidently, not a New Atheist :-):

He's right, if we really believed our message, we would certainly be warning those we loved that they are headed for destruction if they do not turn to God and follow Jesus Christ:

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Vatican researcher: Burial certificate of Jesus found on the Shroud of Turin

She says that Jesus' burial certificate was glued to the cloth covering him and then the ink was transferred to the cloth:

Dr Barbara Frale, a researcher in the Vatican secret archives, said "I think I have managed to read the burial certificate of Jesus the Nazarene, or Jesus of Nazareth." She said that she had reconstructed it from fragments of Greek, Hebrew and Latin writing imprinted on the cloth together with the image of the crucified man.

[...]

Dr Frale said that many of the letters were missing, with Jesus for example referred to as "(I)esou(s) Nnazarennos" and only the "iber" of "Tiberiou" surviving. Her reconstruction, however, suggested that the certificate read: "In the year 16 of the reign of the Emperor Tiberius Jesus the Nazarene, taken down in the early evening after having been condemned to death by a Roman judge because he was found guilty by a Hebrew authority, is hereby sent for burial with the obligation of being consigned to his family only after one full year". It ends "signed by" but the signature has not survived.

The Times Online article states that the Roman authorities would hold the body for a year in a common grave placing a death certificate on the burial cloth for later retrieval. I find it hard to believe that was the custom when dealing with those who had been crucified. I'd read that they either left them to rot on the cross as a deterrent to others or throw their body in their body in the trash. From Antonio Lombatti, a church historian:
He also rejected the idea that authorities would officially return the body of a crucified man to relatives after filling out some paperwork. Victims of that form of execution used by the Romans would usually be left on the cross or were disposed of in a dump to add to its deterrent.
And though she claims that her account is consistent with the Gospels, I don't think it fits with this:
John19:38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
Why would they need a certificate to identify the body when they took it right after his death?

No one wants the Gitmo detainess

Obama learns the obvious: no one wants to take the Gitmo detainees.

President Barack Obama is now confirming what many have long suspected: He will miss his January deadline to close the Guantanamo prison -- partly because he cannot persuade other nations to take the detainees.

Prisoners like Walid Abu Hijazi. The 29-year-old Palestinian is nearing his eighth year at Guantanamo even though the U.S. approved his release in February 2008. No one else has been willing to allow him, or dozens of others, into their territory.

Well, duh! If we don't want them, why would they?

That anyone is surprised by this is pretty laughable:

The slow pace of transfers has surprised many lawyers and Guantanamo critics who expected a warmer diplomatic response to Obama's announced intent to overhaul the Bush detention policy, which drew much criticism around the globe.
So, the nations didn't bow down to Obama and jump to take on the risk and expense of these prisoners even though he's not Bush? You mean it wasn't about torture after all? Shocking!

I guess it's time the left learn that you can't always get what you want even though you elected a politician who said he could get it done. Evidently, he didn't know what the heck he was talking about.

New UK atheist ad campaign: Don't label the kids

Here's the newest ad campaign that will be hitting billboards in the UK starting November 20:

label kids.jpg

The atheists believe that kids should be allowed to choose their own belief system and not have it decided for them:

As Richard Dawkins states, "Nobody would seriously describe a tiny child as a 'Marxist child' or an 'Anarchist child' or a 'Post-modernist child'. Yet children are routinely labelled with the religion of their parents. We need to encourage people to think carefully before labelling any child too young to know their own opinions, and our adverts will help to do that."

We have scheduled the launch of the billboards to take place during the same week as Universal Children's Day (20 November), which is the United Nations' "day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children". We hope the advert's message will encourage the government, media and general public to see children as individuals, free to make their own choices as soon as they are old enough to fully understand what these choices mean, and that they will think twice before describing children in terms of their parents' religion in the future.

Of course our children identify themselves with our religion, that's the family dynamic. Atheists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. all share the values of their belief system with their children. And like Christians, atheists label their children with their religion.

Does anyone think that atheists would fairly present the religions of the world to their children and then let them decide which belief system is true?Their children will follow in the path of their parents, just as our children do until they either believe it or reject it. Christians understand that their children might not be believers because faith is personal, children have to make their own commitment to Christianity.

Christian children aren't considered believers just because their parents are Christians, as many pastors have said: God doesn't have grandchildren. They become Christians when they believe that Jesus is Lord and God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9), until then they are part of the community of faith and if we really believe the word of God, we have to make sure we don't hamper their access to Jesus:

Mark 10:13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.
We have been commanded to teach our kids:
Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Adhering to the word of God means teaching them what we believe and why we believe it. A Christian can do no less.

Sorry, atheists! But I think it's pretty dangerous for us to abandon our kids to their own devices when it comes to a belief system. They are part of the church, it would by impossible to treat them as outsiders, not to mention unbiblical and cruel (as anyone who has taught their child they can't take communion until they are older knows).
