For the apostle Paul and for anyone truly united to Christ by faith death means not only the end of suffering on earth but eternal bliss in the presence of our blessed Lord!

This rap on Philippians is exquisite; I'll pass it on to my friends.

Win/win, Robert, as Calvin says, "He declares that it is indifferent to him, and is all one, whether he lives or dies, because, having Christ, he reckons both to be gain."

Peace.

So Calvin is superior to St. Paul?

Not to me. :-)

But I admit that, in this instance, I understand St. Paul's meaning as Calvin does - St. Paul uses synonymous parallelism to express his faithful indifference.
