Win a cash prize for attending church

posted by Susan Johnson | 11:47am Monday November 9, 2009

You can win up to $500 for going to church. OK, this is all kinds of wrong on so many levels:Of course they packed the church, why wouldn’t people want to win money for just an hour of sitting through a service. But their attendance is no doubt fleeting and will stop when there is no longer an opportunity to win cash. Jesus faced something very similar during his ministry and this was his response:

26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (Joh 6:1 ESV)

Church is for the worship of God not mammon.

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

This gives new meaning to Pascals wager. So do you put money in the collection plate and take number out? Do they spin a wheel of fortune at the end of the service?
His rhetoric on faith versus debt makes it sounds like he’s preaching the prosperity gospel.

MH is right about the prosperity gospel … I grow tired of calling it out.
Why the footage of St. Pat’s (NYC) in this report, FOXNews?
Maybe the blog owner will eventually approve one of the numerous comments I’ve left on this post but the gist is this:
In visiting churches, I’m almost always offered some kind of freebie. Never cash, that’s true. But short of that, I think it’s considered a form of hospitality … that could as easily be seen as an appeal to narcissism.
So, the Baptist church in town offers free books – even those “Joshua” ones by Father Joseph Girzone – and, this past summer, the Presbyterian one where I sent my kids for VBS gave me a token welcome gift bag with trendy religious trinkets.
