Gibbs insults April Ryan of American Urban Radio

posted by Susan Johnson | 7:28pm Friday December 4, 2009

He compares her to a child:How insulting and degrading. Her question was pretty silly but he didn’t have to be insulting. He really is the worst! I liked her response: “Don’t play with me.”

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Sorry, I have to say she had it coming. He tried to answer her question and she felt the need to run roughshod over him with innuendos and hearsay and he had to place her stupid question and snippy attitude in context. American Urban Radio probably just began getting close to meaningful journalism since Obama’s election (never even heard of them before today) and she showed that she can’t tell the difference between discussions/attitudes meant for a book club meeting versus a White House Briefing.

Right on Kyle. The only insult was that he insulted his child by comparing Ryan. Ryan was rude, needlessly confrontational, and wouldn’t shut up long enough for him to respond. Her behavior belied her years of experience, implying that she’s learned nothing during that time about how to be respectful. Instead she acted like a tabloid ‘reporter’, relentlessly trying to make her moronic ‘point.’

She was extremely disrespectful to Gibbs & and the entire room. It was petty, most importantly, she felt like just because it was her question, he had to have it answered NO matter what.
If you seriously think about it, it was pretty childish… That’s just my opinion.

I personally wanted to reach through my tv and smack her. She was acting like a high school reporter, which if she is at the White House briefings she most certainly is not. She could have at the very least stopped talking over him as he tried to answer her questions, which by the way were stupid! Who cares if the social secretary attended the state dinner!?

get over it april, your questions were ridiculous. Gibbs did not want to insult, she gave him no choice. He answered what he could the other innuendos and assertions could not be answered. She would not stop. Not sure if she was jealous of Ms. Rogers or attempting to assert that someone or somepeople were conspiring to hurt the President. Not a good showing by her.

Sorry Michele but as you can see, she gets very little symphaty from the readership here.
That 23 year old veteran “reporter” went on and on trying hard as she could to continue fueling the whole party crasher story. Miss Ryan thinks that tired old tabloid-esque issue is more important than any of the multiple issues this country is suffering from at present. The fact that she thinks that makes her totally irrelevant in my eyes.
Miss Ryan acted like a spoiled child. And she deserved to be treated as such.

I have to agree with most of the respondents here. I too wanted to reach out and dope slap the disrespectful and motor mouth April. Just who did she think she was bringing her ‘Ghetto’ style to the White House. Were I Gibbs and had the authority I’d give April some ‘time out’ to think about her actions.

I heard something about this yesterday afternoon on “Tell Me More:”
“At the end of the day, the Secret Service is responsible for who gets into the White House.”

April Ryan is a joke. I had some respect for the White House staff before today. The idea that they would let idiots like her anywhere close asking questions of the President shows how bad off things are in this country. If the folks in charge of the Urban League had an ounce of sense, they would fire her for incompetency immediately. She is a disgrace to journalism. Honestly, a fourth grader would have done a better job.

Gibbs didn’t do anything wrong. She was rude and disrespectful from the beginning, and Gibbs has every right to put her in her place. If she doesn’t want to be compared to a child, she shouldn’t behave like one!
Gibbs was clearly frustrated, and trying to explain to this genius that the investigation is on-going! How many times does he have to explain that to her, before she gets it?
She’s got it out for Rogers, and made herself look unprofessional and ingorant in her attempt to bring Rogers down!

I think she went too far but to call her a ho, ghetto, and the reference to dope slap is just as overboard…she got caught up in the moment maybe these are the questions her audience wanted to know…whatever the case she indeed went overboard as have most of you.
And you wonder why African American’s take everything “racially”; look how easy it is for you to ‘go there’; on a “christian” website…please…I see why cross burning was not a problem!

She was rude and obnoxious and had it coming to her. I am sure her Mother taught her better. The question was baseless and silly and had nothing to do with anything. She obviously has a personal issue with Ms. Rogers. She was acting like a child so she was treated like one. Mr. Gibbs is a better person than most: I would have sent her out of the room. Between rude and obnoxious reporters and government officials screaming at the President that he is a liar, I wonder what it is about this administration that people feel they can be disrespectful. I am appauled at April Ryan’s attitude and manner – in the White House no less. No polish at all. I for one am putting Urban Radio to the far back burner. Hopefully she will move on and I can bring it back to the front.

I’m black American and I don’t take everything from a racial aspect. This woman was wrong, rude, obnoxious and disrespectful irrespective of her race. Period.
Oh — and crossburning has and always will be a problem Let’s not go there. Let’s not make this racial. The woman was wrong — white\black\pink\green. Color does not make you right or wrong. Behavior is that determining factor.

She acted like a child so she was treated as such. Obviously some things about that dinner were mishandled, but it shouldn’t become a tabloid story. The story is that there were security risks, not that the Social Secretary (or whatever her title is) may or may not have upstaged the First Lady. Ask questions that are relevant and you won’t get such a negative response.
As for the video comment – insulting and degrading? If you insult and degrade, you should most definitely expect some negative response. Gibbs did his best to answer what she was asking, but his being attacked made that difficult apparently.

I have to agree with what Gibbs did….it was unfortunately demeaning. But what a ridiculous line of questioning she was following and she found herself asking sillier and sillier questions. I know nothing of her qualifications or lack of for that post, but she was not up to the job in that exchange.

I had heard about this exchange–and thought from the coverage that this might be a rare moment of Gibbs losing his cool–but no, he fielded a frivolous question as best he could. This woman should try for a job on TMZ–her coverage of White House briefings makes no sense to me if all she is interested in is imaginary rivalries between Michelle Obama and a member of the White House staff. Maybe FoxNews needs a look at her resume…

Ms. Ryan kept talking. This continuous speech conveys the message that she thinks that nothing Mr. Gibbs could say could possibly be more important than what she has to say. Thus she demeans Mr. Gibbs. She should apologize to him. She should have had the grace to terminate her speech, to allow Mr. Gibbs to respond, and to listen to the answer. Her comment of “Don’t play with me” was appropriate, in response to Mr. Gibbs’s insult.
Mr. Gibbs should not have insinuated (which he obviously did) that Ms. Ryan was like a child. Ms. Ryan is clearly an adult, and so her behavior is that of an adult. To call her a child is insulting, and he should apologize for that.

It’s amazing to see the number of comments backing April Ryan on this matter. This is a textbook example of how people observe the same comments completely differently from one another.
If you want to be truly objective on this matter, take off your Democrat/Republican filter, your gender filter, your race filter and then watch it again. You’ll come to the following conclusions:
1) April Ryan acted inappropriately
2) Robert Gibbs was frustrated
3) Robert Gibbs used inappropriate humor
It doesn’t matter that Robert Gibbs was in the right. In today’s society, it is indirectly defined that he simply can’t operate in that manner.
It will be interesting to see how they react together next time. Hopefully, she’ll down tone the attitude a bit and a mutual respect will be developed.
