Provision in ObamaCare to protect seniors in three blue districts in Florida

posted by Susan Johnson | 1:42pm Saturday December 12, 2009

Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho points out that Senator Ben Nelson has made sure that three counties in Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach) would be exempt from any changes to Medicare advantage: John McCain offered an amendment that would have extended the exemption to every county in the US but it was defeated by the Dems. Evidently, the blatant politicization of our health care system doesn’t bother them.I think this proves beyond a reasonable doubt that ObamaCare will lead (and has lead) to the politicization of our health care system. If senior citizens live in a blue district and their Senator or House member has clout, they can keep their Medicare advantage. And of course this begs the question: if the cuts to Medicare aren’t that bad and wouldn’t impact care, why did Nelson make sure some of his constituents (in the districts he needs to win to be re-elected) are exempt?Did the other Senators know that Nelson made a deal for some of his constituents (wonder how the rest of Florida is going to react to the Senator’s deal)? Probably not, even the number two in the Senate has no idea what’s in the bill:

“I would say to the senator from Arizona that I’m in the dark almost as much as he is. And I’m in the leadership,” Durbin said on the Senate floor.

BTW, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services health care is going to cost us $234 billion more over the next ten years (and I bet that turns out to be too low). Thanks Democrats for making health care more affordable.Update: And even though Sen. Ben Nelson got the goodies for some of his constituents, he won’t vote cloture if there isn’t a ban on federal funding of abortion:

Even if all other issues on the health bill are resolved, abortion remains the hardest for Nelson. Regardless of the wording, he demands one result: no federal abortion funds.”If I don’t get it, I can’t support cloture [ending the filibuster] on the next round,” he said.

Well, good for him!

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

You’ve confused Ben Nelson (D,NE) with Bill Nelson (D,FL). Ben Nelson has threatened a filibuster vote over abortion which he’s since rescinded. Bill Nelson hasn’t. Glad to see you take the time to get all of your facts straight.

LOL !!! Michele rarely has her facts straight LOL !!!
“John McCain offered an amendment that would have extended the exemption to every county in the US but it was defeated by the Dems. Evidently the blatant politicization of our health care system doesn’t bother them”
Oh, woe is Michele !! McCain’s amendment is a political maneuver to not allow any medicare cuts at all. Which is totally bogus since McCain and the Republicans have spent decades trying to cut Medicare. Talk about politicization.
One thing I can say for sure – Democrats foresaw the problems of our healthcare industry and Democrats have always tried to fix them.
Thanks Republicans for doing nothing about healthcare—for years.
