President Barack Obama is now confirming what many have long suspected: He will miss his January deadline to close the Guantanamo prison -- partly because he cannot persuade other nations to take the detainees.
Prisoners like Walid Abu Hijazi. The 29-year-old Palestinian is nearing his eighth year at Guantanamo even though the U.S. approved his release in February 2008. No one else has been willing to allow him, or dozens of others, into their territory.
Well, duh! If we don't want them, why would they?
That anyone is surprised by this is pretty laughable:
The slow pace of transfers has surprised many lawyers and Guantanamo critics who expected a warmer diplomatic response to Obama's announced intent to overhaul the Bush detention policy, which drew much criticism around the globe.
So, the nations didn't bow down to Obama and jump to take on the risk and expense of these prisoners even though he's not Bush? You mean it wasn't about torture after all? Shocking!
I guess it's time the left learn that you can't always get what you want even though you elected a politician who said he could get it done. Evidently, he didn't know what the heck he was talking about.
Ed Pound, director of communications for the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board which oversees the site, said his organization is accurately reporting the information that recipients provide. He said in some cases it appears recipients are entering the wrong congressional districts in their reports.
"People make errors, and we've found people are making errors in these reports," Pound said.
Evidently, getting the data correct isn't the director's job:
"Our job is data integrity, not data quality," he said.
Oh and don't expect them to change the data until January. For this quality of service we are paying $84 million.
And you guys wonder why we don't want these people in charge of our health care.
In a statement late Monday, Rep. David Obey of Wisconsin, chairman of the House committee, called the inaccuracies "outrageous" and said the administration owes the American public "a commitment to work night and day to correct the ludicrous mistakes."
"Credibility counts in government and stupid mistakes like this undermine it," Obey said. "We designed the Recovery Act to be open and transparent and I expect the the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, who oversees the recovery act Web site and data to have information that is accurate, reliable and understandable to the American public."
The restrictions were introduced as an amendment by Rep. Bart Stupak, a Michigan Democrat who opposes abortion. They aim to ensure that no taxpayer dollars fund abortion. To that end, the government-run public insurance plan set up by the House bill wouldn't cover abortion, except in the rare cases of rape or incest, or when the pregnancy endangers the woman's life.
Individuals getting federal subsidies to buy insurance on a new health-care exchange -- a potentially large group, reaching from the working poor well into the middle class -- also would be barred from buying policies that cover abortion, unless they do so with their own money. Supporters of legal abortion fear that insurers will stop offering abortion coverage for all their customers to streamline their plans, meaning millions of women could lose benefits they currently have.

Just 13% of abortions nationwide are billed to private insurance, according to a 2001 study by the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights but is cited as a reliable source of data by both sides in the abortion debate. An unknown number of people might seek reimbursement from their insurance company after the procedure. Applying the 13% figure to the most recent abortion data available suggests that fewer than 160,000 women a year rely on insurance to cover the cost of an abortion upfront.
More than 90% of abortions take place in the first trimester, at an average cost of $413.
Those who don't have insurance now will not be losing something they have, they will just have to figure out a way to pay for it just as they have been doing.
Since only 160,000 will be impacted, why doesn't the compassionate left raise funds to pay for the abortions of those who will now have to pay for their own abortions. If feminist organizations like NOW want women to have free access to abortions, why don't they pay for them?
