Herman Cain and transparency

posted by Ruth Graham

Politics is on everyone’s mind. By November 2012 we will be sick of it. The election process seems to drag on from election to election with no break.

I don’t know about you, but Herman Cain seemed to be an authentic sort of guy. Refreshing in  a sea of “spin”. Of course we still don’t know the true story but it was refreshing while it lasted to have someone on the scene who seemed to be “the real deal”. He seemed to speak plainly and connected with the American people.  I think he made the right choice to protect his family. It is a crime what the press does to someone – no longer is it “innocent ’til proven guilty”. We may have sacrificed a good man to the media gods.

Is that what we do with people who seem to be authentic and real? Is this why we fear authenticity? Afraid we will be marginalized? Penalized? It is scary to put yourself out there and try to be transparent. I know after I wrote In Every Pew There Sits a Broken Heart I got a lot of email. Some positive but some blisteringly negative. It was very hard to read what some people wrote. But I knew God had called me to be transparent regardless of the consequences. I have found over the years that people appreciate transparency. It just isn’t easy. But I find that if I tell on myself then no one can scare me by telling on me. I take the wind out of their sails!

And we are only as sick as our secrets. No secrets here. There is freedom in transparency. Try it.

I made a trip out to New Mexico last week to speak for the Lincoln County National Day of Prayer event. It is the largest per capita in the country. They had 1400 people in attendance at 6:30 in the morning! Wonderful, warm people - it was a privilege to be a small part of their observance. It never

Media Reporting vs. God's Reporting
Charles Colson died yesterday. I have been interested in reading and hearing the media report on it. The media has reported his death. In a 10 inch column 3/4s of it recounts his transgressions during the Watergate scandal. And there were many. Then they mention his conversion to Christ. Ho

I had the privilege this week of speaking in Fort Worth for Lifeline Chaplaincy based out of Houston. They place good and godly chaplains in hospitals in Texas. A great group! While there I had breakfast with a special friend. I hadn't seen her for some years but she is the kind of friend that yo

and those with can have a great life
