Recently I heard a politician tell his audience that he would make sure a certain bill was put forward because of the emotional wear and tear on victims of violence. He got applause. I thought about what he had said. Is that how laws are made...because events stir up emotions so we grab something that will soothe us at the moment? Violence!

The news is full of reports of violence. Homemade bombs explode killing and wounding. We are outraged and angry. Sad and bewildered. Understandably. We are so blessed to live in a country where these things are the exception rather than the rule. There are places where this is almost a daily occurrence - like Israel. Do we give it much thought as we watch the news each day and hear of a bomb going off in some other land? I don't think so. Our concern lasts only as long as it remains in the news....

Suicide

I didn't wake up today thinking my life would change. But it has. Suicide. The word is so cold and ugly. It is so stark and final. And yet it leaves so much behind. Unanswered questions. Unfinished business. Unspeakable grief. The word means "the intentional taking of one's own life". Intentional destruction. I hate it. Today a dear friend of mine died at his own hand. I am heart broken for his dear wife and family, our community. Why? Why? Why? There are no words...and even if...

Guns, My Mother and Easter

The news is full of the gun control issue. Everyone seems to be concerned...I am beginning to wonder if I should go out and buy one just because I can and perhaps one day I will not be allowed to or so the pundits would make us think. Members of my family - even the women - have armed themselves. I am quite sure that if I had one, I would not know where to store it so that I might have easy access in case of an emergency. The last post I wrote about silence in Heaven. Perhaps you are wondering - or not - why I have been silent. I have been traveling! My creativity does not travel well and my focus is on the task at hand. And to be honest I have not yet figured out to use my technological gadgets to write and post while away from home. I do not have a laptop...writing in a hotel business office on a PC makes me crazy. I have an iMac at home which talks a different language - not altogther but different enough....

Silence in Heaven

The 8th chapter of Revelation, verse 1 says, "And when He broke the seventh seal there was silence in heaven for about half and hour." Think about that. All through Revelation up to this point we have been told that the sound of heaven is like "many waters", peals of thunder, trumpets, horns, loud voices worshipping and praising God - it's been noisy to say the least! Now there is silence. Why? What caused the abrupt change? And can you imagine the effect it had on the heavenly residents....
