The Gift of Thought

“The heavens speak of the Creator’s glory and the sky proclaims God’s handiwork.”
-Psalms 19:2
“How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.”
-Psalms 104:24

According to a traditional Jewish tale, God once said to Abraham, “But for me, you would not be here.” “I know that, Lord,” he responded, “but were I not here, there would be no one to think about you.”

God has given us a mind to consider the beauty and vastness of the world he has created. Let us use this gift to its fullest as we seek to understand this world that God has created. For as Galileo once said, “I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.”

Not to quibble with “Abraham,” but one of the beauties of Trinitarian doctrine is the idea that God can contemplate Himself and needs no one else!

Mind is the mirror that reflects and experiences the unfolding of existence. The less grime obscures, the truer is the reflected image. Eliminating bias while not possible is accomplished most effectively by honest, open and direct engagement. When I experience awe and wonder, my mind is free of the usual constraints of word and belief. Instead, I am as though attuned to the most fundamental base, without the need to reduce it to a derivative form. I groan and smile, and whether that supports a worldview or not is immaterial. I am in a state and that state is potent and immediate. This is key. In ecstasy, there is no dogma, there is no disagreement; there is only a delicate and potent flow of states which like a Bach fugue draws many distinct themes into a unified whole.
