Real Science. Real Faith.

Real Science. Real Faith.Click here for more amazing videos

Does science lead to a loss of faith in God or can a real scientist have real faith? The above video looks at the examples of several renowned scientists who made important scientific contributions and still continued to hold strong to their faith, including Nicolaus Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, Gregor Mendel, Galileo Galilei, Michael Faraday, and George Washington Carver. It also includes some excellent quotes on science and faith from these famous scientists

Ultimately, the video concludes that “modern science as we know it today was founded and has flourished within a Christian worldview. The claim that Christianity is an enemy to science is a mistake or a lie.” Rather than an enemy of faith, science can be used for both the benefit on mankind and the glory of God.

Does science lead to a loss of faith in God or can a real scientist have real faith?
The answer to “can a real scientist have real faith?” is clearly “Yes”, at least if we can trust self-reports of “real faith”. However, if the first of these supposed alternatives, “Does science lead to a loss of faith” is interpreted statistically, the answer also appears to be “Yes”: the proportion of the non-religious rises monotonically with degree of education, particularly education in the sciences, and is highest among the most eminent scientists. It is interesting that the most recent of the scientists listed above died in 1943; and worth noting that Newton appears not to have been a doctrinally orthodox Christian with regard to the divinity of Jesus, and the Trinity, while Faraday was a Sandemanian.

Science has led to a loss of faith for me in in cases where it has falsified some religious traditions, like recent creation, or a global flood.
There are other areas of faith that are not falsifiable and not in danger of being disproven by science, but they can be damaged by other things like non contradiction…

At first I thought this was a pretty good video (except for the annoying ads) until it mentioned Werner Von Braun. That’s when my jaw dropped to the floor….

So Francis Collins is dead?
btw, you’re right that Newton was not an orthodox Christian, although he was extremely religious. The maker of this video was very sloppy.

Astronomy grew out of astrology, and we retain a lot of terminology from that time. But just because astrology was a necessary stop on the way to astronomy doesn’t mean that we need astrology to practice astronomy, or even that they aren’t in conflict, today.

I said “listed above” i.e. in the post: Nicolaus Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, Gregor Mendel, Galileo Galilei, Michael Faraday, and George Washington Carver.

Beaglelady,
No problem, but thanks. I hadn’t watched the video when I posted – hence my confining my remarks to those listed in the post.
I have now though – and what a shoddy and dishonest piece of propaganda! No mention that Faraday, as a Sandemanian, would have thought all the others mentioned were Hell-bound. No mention that others among the Protestants would have thought this of all the Catholics, and vice versa. No mention that Galileo was silenced and threatened with torture by the Church. The fact that non-believers increasingly predominate in science as you move toward modern times, and at least for the 20th and 21st centuries, as you move up the scale of eminence, is simply ignored. It is true that modern science (although not science as a whole) arose in a Christian context, but its growth and progress has coincided with the decline of the hold of Christianity on western culture. Pretending otherwise is futile.

B-L guys,
So far, to date, I am excited to see intelligent design proven through your zealous evolution-based ministry. God used evolution as proof of an Intelligent Designer. Woohoo. But after Adam to Jesus, we are to pursue the Gospel preached. Are we not?
But Charles Darwin? That is incompatible and is inappropriate to promote him as a role model for Christians. He’s no different than Andrew Sullivan or Christopher Hitchens in that department.
I mean, even a child molester can hold down a respectable job.
When, or where, is your outreach to the lost? So far, you go after your fellow Christians with quite the passion, but what about the lost?
