Call to action

posted by Linda G. Howard

After Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne hit Vero Beach, Florida, in 2004, the street signs in Indian River County were all twisted.  Many of the street markers were gone.  Almost all of the ones left standing were turned the wrong way.

These street signs said the right words; but you could not see them because they were down on the ground or they were turned the wrong directions.  Sometimes my life gets twisted and I become a person who doesn’t do what God wants.

James 1:22 (NCV) reads, “Do what God’s teaching says; when you only listen and do nothing, you are fooling yourselves.”  The Apostle Paul wrote about faith and grace in his letters to the church.  Paul said these assets are God’s free gift.  That is true.

But some people said, “If God’s grace is free and we get God’s grace when we sin, we should sin more.”  This is false teaching.  In fact, James was writing to the church to straighten out this incorrect teaching.

James said, “You are not only to listen to God‘s word but you are to do the things you hear in the Bible.”  Many Sundays at Special Gathering, I hear the sermon–because I give it–and I think this is good but I’m not doing what God’s word teaches me.

All Christians are to be action people.  We are to listen to God and we are to do what He says.  We hear, God is love.  Therefore, we should love the people you meet each day.   Too often, we leave the worship service; and then we fight over a piece of cake or who’s going to sit in what chair.

God says, “Feed the poor.”  Therefore, we should help to get food to people who need it.  One of Special Gathering  members gave money to Special Gathering to help with evacuating some of our members from the hurricane area.

Action people don’t sit passively and listen to what is being said.  We are to be loving, caring, giving people.

James said that we are to do the things we hear.  We are not to just listen.  We must become people of action.  What action do you need to implement into your life?  What has the Lord been telling you to do that will make a difference in the life of another person?

Eating fish
We all know that when you eat fish you will usually come across a bone or two no matter how carefully the fish has been filleted.  We also know that the bones aren't digestible and should be spit out.  Fish bones, in fact, can be dangerous; but that fact never kept me from eating and appreciating

A history lesson
Over the past months, I've discovered the classics from Sir Walter Scott, James Fenimore Cooper, St. Augustine to Andrew Murray.  Of course, most of these volumes were written in the early 1800's.  Unlocking the labyrinth of historical fact wrapped around the old English prose of that earlier cent

Wilted
A couple of times a year I must dedicate several days to my garden.  I have a small yard.  Therefore, most of my back and side yards are devoted to my garden.  I’m not consistent enough with my yard work to be considered a true gardener; but I enjoy the fruits of my sporadic labors all year rou
