Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety.
But mostly deep, deep gratitude.
How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

My Big News
Dear Readers,
This is the most difficult (and surreal) post I've had to write. I'm leaving Beliefnet, the company I co-founded in 1999.
In mid November, I'll be stepping down as President and Editor in Chief to lead a project on the future of the media for the Federal Communications Commission, the

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Cold War Casualties
* Using the strictest criteria 382 deaths caused by hostile acts occurred during the early period of the Cold War . We believe the number should be much higher, and include operational losses such as the crew of 99 lost on the submarine USS Scorpion, lost at sea in May 1968. At numerous times during the Cold War, large losses were taken in ambiguous circumstances, and were often shrouded in secrecy. Combat deaths were classified as “accidents” due to political or security reasons, and thus the public at large (and too often, the next-of-kin) were denied the truth. Source VFW St Pete Times
* DOD list 165 POW/MIA from Cold War Shoot Downs 125 still listed as missing. Source DOD
* The Cold War from September 1945 – December 26, 1991, was global in nature, and many facets and changing strategic considerations. During some parts of the period, actual shooting wars were involved, but always it was a political and military confrontation. Many of the losses in the Cold War were on missions that were under the veil of secrecy.
* Of 382 here are some major losses not included : Berlin Airlift 31 Americans killed in accidents, USS Thresher 125 lost, USS Scorpion 99 Crew Lost, USS Liberty 34 Killed and 173 wounded by Israeli Attack, Mayaguez Incident 18 KIA, 3 MIA and 41 wounded,

The idea that Ronald Reagan won the Cold War has been taken up by the conservative wing of American politics without discretion. This premise ignores ALL the veterans who served before the Berlin Wall was torn down, the Berlin Airlift of 1948, President Kennedy’s reaction to the Cuban Missile Crisis by forcing the Soviets hand and getting them to remove the missiles, and the presence of US troops in post-war Europe and Japan which kept the Soviets from taking over in these places. In post-World War II Europe, US troops kept the Soviets from further advancement, and complemented George F. Kennan’s incubatory containment policy—which was economic and political in spirit. But Kennan could’t have accomplished what he did without US troops stationed beyond the Eastern European perimeter.

Hello,
My name is Mick Stewart and I am the President of the Allied Forces Cold War Association [ AFCWA ] and Post Commander [ Post 1 - Cold War Prisoners of War / Missing in Action POW/MIA ] in Houston, Texas. We are a new Cold War veterans society, formed this month on 1 May 2009 – Cold War Victory Day. Membership in our organization is unique, in that veterans who served in NATO, SEATO, or any nation allied to the United States in the fight against Communism, 1945-1991 is viable for membership. We are the first international Cold War veterans organization, based in the United States that offers membership to allied veterans.
We have just established a new Cold War Veterans Forum. Would you publish our forum on your website or to your members?

I’ve no doubt the USSR sank Scorpion. It has a gash on the rear part of the sail as if something struck it. The USSR would be bold enough to pull it off as they knew we would never go to war over it as we were involved in Vietnam already.
