Draft Democratic Platform Plank on Abortion

Tuesday August 12, 2008

The proposed 2008 abortion plank: The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken...

Looks like the Democrats are getting even more radical on abortion. They've even dropped the "safe, legal and rare" rhetoric that was supposed to provide them with some sort of moral fig leaf on the issue. And they still want the taxpayer to be paying for abortions (that's the part about "regardless of ability to pay").

Regardless of how much I might agree with them about other issues, for this one reason I could never be a Democrat. I might be persuaded to vote for specific pro-life Democratic candidates, as long as I felt comfortable they would vote their principles and not the party line once elected.

sounds like a commitment to a very realistic approach to wanted and unwanted pregnancies. havent seen too many republicans and pro-lifers standing up to adopt babies "saved from abortion"

In countries where abortions are outlawed, rich women can still fly to another country to have an abortion. But poor women cannot pay for a flight, and thus cannot have abortions. "Regardless of ability to pay" means that we need to keep it legal here, because if we outlaw it in the USA, it's only going to stop poor people who can't afford to travel to Canada.

It's not about taxpayers funding abortions.

And whose platform do you think will actually reduce the number of aborted pregnancies? The Democratic platform, who want to teach teens about contraception so they don't get pregnant in the first place, or the Republicans whose plan is to just point their fingers and tell everyone not to have sex?

Actually, the Democratic Party has done everything it can to promote abortion on demand. There are over 1.2 million abortions a year. Approximately half are repeat abortions and less than two percent of all abortions are for life of the mother, rape or incest. Less than ten percent of all abortions are for fetal disability.

The fact is the people who are helping women and their children are the pro-life/pro-family groups, who with help from their Republican allies in Congress, are able to run the over-3000 volunteer-staffed crisis pregnancy centers nationwide.

And yes, Republicans do adopt. Just ask the McCains. They adopted their daughter Bridget from India when she was a deathly ill infant in Mother Teresa's orphanage. They also brought home another severely ill infant girl who was adopted by a McCain aide. The McCains paid for the medical care of both girls and the aide and his family have never seen a medical bill.

Unfortunately, due the the number of abortions in this country and the large number of children tied up in the welfare system, it is difficult to pursue a domestic adoption. I personally know several families that pursued adoption outside the U.S. because of the difficulties surrounding domestic adoptions.

The Democrats could show their commitment to this issue by pursuing and promoting real solutions to abortion-- not just pregnancy prevention.

I'm so tired of hearing people say the pro-life people don't do anything after the baby is born. In 1992 a young lady we barely knew knocked on our door after her boyfriend kicked her out. She had one baby by him )she was almost two), and was pregnant with another. We took her into our home, took care of them, and after the baby was born we took them with us when we moved from Biloxi, MS to Hannibal, MO. I never dreamed that she would hit it off with my brother, and she is now my sister-in-law. My niece, who just turned 18, is currently living with us prior to starting college. Strangely enough, it was several years after I got involved with the pro-life movement that it even dawned on me just what we had done. Without ever analyzing our reasons and emotions, we just knew that it was the right thing to do. What have you pro-aborts done to help save babies?

I fail to understand why birth control fails so often - or are many women simply relying on abortion as a birth control method? It is so easy to prevent pregnacy and yet millions of babies have been aborted/killed. What is wrong with the liberal values that allow this to continue year after year.

I am responding to the comment listed below.

You need to look harder, besides, how can we adopt babies who survive an abortion when Obama voted to kill them?

"haven't seen too many Republicans and Pro-lifers standing up to adopt babies 'saved from abortion"

Really? There are two million couples waiting to adopt, according to this site:
