Obama's Supposed Messiah Complex: The Distortions Mount

Friday August 8, 2008

Putting aside for a moment the question of whether the McCain campaign intended to imply that Obama is the anti-Christ. They clearly did intend to imply that he has a Messianic complex and is breathtakingly arrogant. Rush Limbaugh calls him...

It's politics. All quotations are taken out of context.

Um, you have showed nothing that really refutes much. Even when you put them in "context" there is still extreme megalomania. The republicans should stop with the messiah talk because it makes them look(rightfully) unwilling(or unable) to engage on policy. The snark moved Obama down a few pegs but nobodies moving towards the Republicans.

Here is some new politics "community-organizer-speak"...

"It's politics. All quotations are taken out of context to appeal to the ignorant."

Thanks for an objective look at this. Not all republicans like this slanderous style of campaigning, particularly since it borders on outright lying. McCain doesn't need to do this. He is a war hero and a man of honor.

I'm so relieved to see others recognize slander and vilification for what it is. I'm going to email the McCain campaign with a polite suggestion that they: 1)grow up. 2)Study up on the 8th Commandment
3) Read and meditate on Mattew 12: "For every idle word a man speaketh, he will render an account on the day of judgement; for by your words will you be justified and by your words condemned."

In-context quote from BO (6-03-08): "I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal ...."

So in the 232+ years of our nation's history before BO showed up, no sick were cared for and no good jobs were created? And somehow, his presence will effect change in our very planet? I don't see how you can accuse Republicans of overstating BO's arrogance (and lack of historical knowledge.)

In-context quote from BO (8-07-08): "America is, is no longer, uh, what it could be, what it, it once was. And I say to myself, I don't want that future for my children."

In-context quote from BO (4-06-08): "... it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.")

Sorry, folks, but BO's combination of inexperience, negativity toward America and Americans, and super-elevated opinion of himself make him a blatantly unacceptable leader for this great nation.

As I read your article, I began to picture Jesus speaking to the multitudes and telling them that they did not need an intermediary to pray directly to "Our Father who art in Heaven." This radical idea was a threat to the old establishment of priests. The change Jesus spoke of threatened their power - their control over people. I pictured the priests slandering and ridiculing him - calling for his crucifixion. "What arrogance! He thinks he is the King of the Jews!"

Isn't it always the same? People fear change. The old power hangs on and fights against the change. They play on the people's fears. "Don't change! Don't change! You'll be sorry! Unhappy as you are, your life will be worse if you embrace change."

According to this post, Obama claims that he is not important in and of himself. Rather, he is important because he serves as a living symbol (an older word would have been "embodiment") of the hopes and dreams of a people. So Obama's not saying that he is a messiah, merely claiming that he fulfills the key functions of one. I suppose the important question here is, how many of those functions can one claim to fulfill while not actually claiming one is a messiah? (Or to put it another way: If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, eats, swims and quacks like a duck, at what point may it be considered a duck?)

Perhaps to the author's discomfort, a few of the comments on this post tend to reinforce the messianic meme -- especially CowboyDenver's, which seems to follow the syllogism: "Jesus represented change and the authorities feared him; Obama represents change and the authorities fear him; therefore, the Obama campaign is akin to Jesus's ministry on earth." On the whole, it's a fascinating trivialization of Christianity, and as a neutral but curious observer, I am deeply impressed at the achievement.

MochaLite, are you not aware that the United States, unlike other developed nations, does not have universal health care, and that poor children go without medical care? Are you also not aware that the Democratic party seeks to change that situation?

Are you also not aware that the current administration has for the most part denied the threat of global climate change and has refused to take any steps to limit or reduce the production of greenhouse gases, and that the opposition seeks to change that situation as well?

Perhaps you consider it anti-American to think that this country could do better. That, to me, suggests that you think progress is impossible. Most Americans would disagree.

"Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors. And so we had to act and act now. Let me explain why. First, without a strong inspection system, Iraq would be free to retain and begin to rebuild its chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs in months, not years."
--Pres. Clinton, December 16, 1998

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." --President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." --President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"The community of nations may see more and more of the very kind of threat Iraq poses now: a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction, ready to use them or provide them to terrorists. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow." --Bill Clinton in 1998

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." --Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

"Saddam's goal ... is to achieve the lifting of U.N. sanctions while retaining and enhancing Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs. We cannot, we must not and we will not let him succeed." --Madeline Albright, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." -- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." --Sandy (is that a top secret document down your pants or are you just glad to see me?) Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." Letter to President Clinton, signed by: -- Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." --Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Iraq made commitments after the Gulf War to completely dismantle all weapons of mass destruction, and unfortunately, Iraq has not lived up to its agreement." --Barbara Boxer, November 8, 2002

"There's no question that Saddam Hussein is a threat... Yes, he has chemical and biological weapons. He's had those for a long time. But the United States right now is on a very much different defensive posture than we were before September 11th of 2001... He is, as far as we know, actively pursuing nuclear capabilities, though he doesn't have nuclear warheads yet. If he were to acquire nuclear weapons, I think our friends in the region would face greatly increased risks as would we." --Wesley Clark on September 26, 2002

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." Letter to President Bush, Signed by: --Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), and others, Dec 5, 2001

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the! e means of delivering them." --Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." --Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." --Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." --Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." --Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do" --Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." --Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..." --Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." --Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years. And that may happen sooner if he can obtain access to enriched uranium from foreign sources -- something that is not that difficult in the current world. We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." --John Rockefeller, Oct 10, 2002

"Saddam’s existing biological and chemical weapons capabilities pose a very real threat to America, now. Saddam has used chemical weapons before, both against Iraq’s enemies and against his own people. He is working to develop delivery systems like missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles that could bring these deadly weapons against U.S. forces and U.S. facilities in the Middle East." --John Rockefeller, Oct 10, 2002

"Whether one agrees or disagrees with the Administration’s policy towards Iraq, I don’t think there can be any question about Saddam’s conduct. He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do. He lies and cheats; he snubs the mandate and authority of international weapons inspectors; and he games the system to keep buying time against enforcement of the just and legitimate demands of the United Nations, the Security Council, the United States and our allies. Those are simply the facts." --Henry Waxman, Oct 10, 2002

Arrogance is just like pornography......I may not be able to define it but I know it when I see it and I see it daily in Obama.

Often though, one's ability to spot arrogance in others is directly related to one's own level of insecurity.

If the GOP statements are so off base, what are you worried about? Jokes and parody are only effective if they have a basis in truth - right?

Wrong. Not since the dawn of civilization has this been remotely true. Besides, do you know anyone with a modicum of intelligence who completely lacks arrogance at all times? I bet you've acted arrogantly before; ergo, if I were to parody your arrogance and try to make it your defining characteristic, there would be basis in truth, right?

This assertion is simply ridiculous. Anyone with a brain will recognize this as propaganda. Obama - Change WE can believe in McCain - A Leader Americans can believe in. Obama always talks about "We," while McCain always talks about "I." McCain is a profiteer...whether it's using the Iraq war to try to get elected. Leaving his first wife after returning from from Vietnam, entering an adulterous relationship with his present wife, who is rich. There's more to honor than ones conduct in war. But, also your conduct as a husband and a father.

Thank you for this. I am so sick of hearing people tell lies about Obama. I ,and most of his supporters, never thought of him as a Messiah. Just a intelligent, well educated, well spoken man who tries to work with people even when he disagrees with them. This is just what this country needs after 8 years of 'my way or the highway' foreign policy.

The right has gotten away with lying and distortions for too long. It's about time people called them on their nonsense.

Are republicans Christians? I know of no place in the Bible that states I will see or expect another Messiah. The VP referred to the citizens of W.Va. as in-breds, and he laughed, said he could say anythng, not running for re-election. Are the republicans "The Shepherd" knowing every Christian on site. You have to accept the faith that one proclaims, God and self are the only one wo knows ones beleifs. Stay on the issues that affect Americans, keep your stupid jokes out of the media.

Bad Jim, are you aware that many of the "developed nations" that have universal health coverage routinely ration that coverage, and often deny or delay life-saving or life-extending treatment? So perhaps the panacea of universal health care is not the utopian solution people hope for.

Are you aware not aware that, according to climate experts the average global temperature has not increased for the past 11 years, and is not expected to increase until 2015 at the earliest? Even NPR has reported that we seem to be in a "global warming hiatus". This is despite the fact that there has been no change in the rate of increase of CO2 being produced. So there may be a sound scientific reason to doubt the global climate change hysteria.

Selective use of your opponent's statements is common to all campaigns, even Obama's. If you doubt that, just recall Obama's repeated distortion of McCain's "100 years" statement about Iraq. McCain clearly stated his position that we might have to stay in Iraq for a long time to help with the transition to democracy, just as we did in Japan, Korea and Germany. The Obama campaign took the comment out of context to imply that McCain was willing to be in combat operations in Iraq for the next 100 years. It was dishonest, but it was politics. Just because it is your ox being gored doesn't make it any better or worse.

Jim Cummings

I was under the impression that the Messiah comments was more about supporters. The way his supporters wear their plastered smiles, nodding at everything he says. Seems to be a psychological disorder. It's easy to believe Bush is the cause for ALL your problems and Obama will save you. Sorry to burst your bubble. Your life will still be the same--only your taxes will be higher. And if he gets his wish, Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi will have a say in your medical care. Enjoy!
