Obama’s Speech

posted by swaldman | 10:41pm Thursday August 28, 2008

Several surprises:
All week we’d been hearing that surrogates needed to attack McCain because the Obama needed to remain positive. Turns out he’s tougher on McCain that most of the previous speakers
Republicans had tried to make him and his family seem alien and un-American. Obama could have chosen to say we should vote for him in spite of his unusual upbringing. Instead, he made his family upbringing one of his greatest selling points.
He was a bit more specific with policies than he usually is.
I felt sure he wouldnt talk about aboriton. Instead he made a direct appeal toward his advocacy of reducing the number of unintended pregnancies.
Faith and values talk:
“Sacred commitment to our troops”
“Finding strength and grace” to solve problems.
“The fundamental belief that I am my brothers keeper and my sisters keeper”
Referring to MLK as “the preacher”
“In the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.”
All in all, remarkable.

Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Just like Barney Smith, Barack Obama said it like it is. The Democrats are united and they will win. While the Religious Right will stay at home because they don’t like McCain and they will probably hate his V.P. pick, the Democrats will all come out and vote.
The only way the Republicans can win is if they rig the elections. Oh yes, they did that in 2000, didn’t they?

Gosh, right now I’m watching Sarah Palin on TV give her speech and, with all due respect to Barack Obama, I really think your next post, Steve, should be:
“Palin’s Speech”
She’s really hitting it out of the park!!!!
Barack Obama is so …. yesterday!
