Dishonest Obama Ad

posted by swaldman | 11:02am Thursday September 18, 2008

I want to say at the outset that a) I believe the McCain’s ads have been much more dishonest than Obama’s, b) that the lying does matter (!) and c) conservative religious leaders ought to be smacking him but good for his violation of the 9th Commandment (8th if your Catholic or Lutheran).Having said that, if Obama is making an issue of McCain’s dishonesty, he needs be scrupulously accurate in his ads — and those on the religious left should chastise him when he isn’t. So far, they haven’t.The claim in this one that McCain wants to cut Social Security benefits in half strikes me as indefensible.

Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

“The claim in this one that McCain wants to cut Social Security benefits in half strikes me as indefensible.”
Its a half truth based on speculation in the current market. Some believe that if you needed to retire in 3-5 years you would have lost half your retirement money if it was in the stock market.
Its a typical policitcal add. its not nearly as bad as McCain’s.
imo as long as the 8th commandment(I’m lutheran) is out the window.
Fortunately you agree. Until others do I’m afraid its the only way to fight pure fabrication.

I totally agree about it being wrong to make false statements in ads. But it works.
I think the media has done a great disservice to voters for not pressing the issue or even mentioning that McCain wants to cut Social Security and Medicare. Since McCain continually changes his answers, sometimes within hours, it is impossible to know what he would support.
McCain has been extremely evasive when answering any questions. I have never seen an amount. At one time McCain supported totally eliminating social security
His balance the budget farce has a short sentence about cutting benefits for Social Security and Medicare.
