As to Sister’s vote for Obama? She may be a nun,but she is a free thinking one, who seems to know that there is more than one issue when voting for a candidate. Abortion is a personal issue. Obama understands that. He feels women are in charge of their own bodies, not the government. All women are entitled to medical care if they choose to carry to term or if they choose to terminate a pregnancy.

According to the Florida Catholic newspaper it is a sin to vote for a pro-abortion candidate IF that is the PRIMARY reason you are voting for them. The Catholic church is also very concerned about the poor in this society, they are opposed to the Iraq war, they are opposed to people suffering because of lack of health care. They support working class people, they urge us to take into consideration the candidates position on all of the issues. I compared the candidates and their positions on health care, worker rights, energy, climate change, Iraq War and the loss of lives of our young men and women, the economy and their ideas for rebuilding this country and restoring it’s position of respect among our allies.
I agree with the 106 year old nun. Obama gets my vote.

There is no equality of all issues. Some issues are more important than others. Abortion, or any destruction of innocent human live, is always an INTRINSIC evil and should not be supported by any believing Catholic.
The issues of Iraq war, economy, climate change are all important issues, but combined they still do not match the evil that is done when one innocent human being is killed. Plus, the difference between Obama’s and McCain’s approach to these “extra-issues” will not add up to much. However their approach to abortion will be very consquential.
Obama has promised that his first act in office will be to sign the “Freedom of Choice Act”, which will virtually nullify all pro-life progress in the past 40 years by offering abortion on demand to little girls, without parental notification.
I will be greatly disheartened if he is elected.

Where were you pro-Obama, abortion-excusing, cafeteria “catholics” catechized? Wherever you picked up your “catholic” conscience you should ask for a refund. You seem to think that the Catholic Church’s teaching on abortion is somehow tied to the Republican party. Or optional to those who are “informed”. You claim to be Catholic, but you profess teachings that are directly contrary to those of the Church. And you attempt to justify your opposition to Catholic teaching by pointing to other social issues which, while admittedly important, even combined come nowhere near the moral gravity of abortion.
This isn’t about voting Republican or Democrat. It’s about voting CATHOLIC. If you’re not Catholic, then you probably won’t understand our total opposition to abortion. If you are a Catholic, then for Heaven’s sake take the time to learn what the Church teaches and then exercise the teachings of Christ in your everyday life INCLUDING YOUR VOTE. And YES, Sarah, abortion IS a political issue. It is also a moral issue. Would you have claimed that slavery wasn’t a political issue in the 1860s? Or that the pograms against the Jews in Eastern Europe in the 1930s and 1940s weren’t political issues? Were they “religious” issues that should have been kept out of the political debate? Nonsense. And we Catholics have an obligation AND A RIGHT to vote in accordance with a conscience formed in Catholic teachings.
If you want to vote for Obama because you hate the Republicans, then nothing anyone says will sway you. But don’t try to claim that such a vote is supported by Catholic teaching.

The article you read was almost certainly referring to a 2004 letter written by then-Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, which stated,
“Catholics would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present themselves for Holy Communion, if they were to
deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stance on abortion or euthanasia.”
Many Catholics have misinterpreted (as do you) that statement to mean that they can vote for a pro-abortion candidate as long as the candidate’s support of abortion is not the primary reason they vote for him or her. But those same Catholics disregard the next sentence in that same letter from Cardinal Ratzinger which stated,
“When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.”
And the U.S. Bishops have stated clearly that they can see no issues facing the electorate that are, either individually or in total, proportional to the evil of abortion.
Most recently, the Texas Bishops clarified this teaching by stating,
“To vote for a candidate who supports the intrinsic evil of abortion or ‘abortion rights’ when there is a morally acceptable alternative would be to cooperate in the evil – and, therefore, morally impermissible”.
So, there you have it, Informed Catholic. The question is, do you cast your vote against the supporter of abortion, or do you cooperate in the evil?

For those who think about the last 8 years of the Bush administration as being those of unemployment and crashing stock markets, and financial woes, you should research a little better. First, if that was the case, Bush wouldn’t have been re-elected. Second, it has only been since a DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS has been elected that we went down the tubes financially- which goes along with their platform. The President did not make the financial decisions which influenced the country’s problems today, Congress did, and Congress got us into the mess we are in right now~ A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS.
Recently at Mass, a very wise priest said that if your beliefs are that government should take care of the poor, then government should take care of the poorest of the poor. Who are they? They are the unborn, those who have absolutely nothing- including life. Those are the ones that we should be most concerned about. If you don’t have life, you can’t have anything else- no education, no housing, no insurance, no medical, no food etc. . I can’t believe that anyone who is a Catholic can vote for someone who so adamantly believes in leaving a dying baby, delivered after a botched abortion, to suffer for up to hours after their live birth until they die. That is not pro choice- that is murder and that is Obama’s position.
