Climbing Her Way Back to Irrelevancy

Thursday October 2, 2008

In the weeks after the debate, Sarah Palin was helping McCain, which is very unusual for a vice presidential pick. In the last week, she's been a drag on the ticket, which is equally unusual. With this solid performance she merely goes back to being a normal vice presidential candidate - largely irrelevant to the outcome.

Both hit the central themes: Biden: McCain represents Bush III, Obama cares about the middle class. Palin: No, McCain represents real change because he's a maverick. Come to think of it, the most important part of the debate may have been when Biden frontally assaulted the idea that McCain's a maverick. Not sure if Biden made an impact but it was smart to go there. Without that, McCain has nothing.

Here's what I don't get, and what I was really, really hoping Biden would bring up: She spent a large part of the beginning of the debate insisting that John McCain was pro-regulation, and wanted the government to hold "predator lenders," and "greedy Wall Street" responsible with tougher, watchdog laws. But then, at the close of the debate, she rambled on about how government has to be "on the side of the people" (whatever that means), and that the individual needs government to get out of his/her business and stop regulating everything. Why won't someone call her - and McCain - on this ridiculous waffle.

It's unfathomable how gullible our country is. If these two just keep repeating the word "maverick" enough times, somehow people will start seeing them in those terms, despite all facts to the contrary.

yes, climbing back to irrelevancy, and I heartily hope to Wasilla (to be unheard of ever again, except in Trivial Pursuit questions).

The fact that this woman has been foisted by any political party as a serious contender for VP is terrifying. It says a great deal about how debased politics has become in the US. No wonder government isn't working.

The VP moderator never pushed Palin to answer the many questions she never answered, which is why some people think Palin did much better than in her interview with Katie Couric.

My greatest regret in this campaign is that the word "Maverick" has been neutered. I think Bret Maverick would change his name after this election.

Sarah Palin is great. She injects some life into an oh-hum campaign. But is she ready to be VP? I don't think so., and I say that as one who will probably vote for McCain. She is a fast learner, however, and if McCain should win, I expect she'll catch up. What I don't care for, though, is her light-hearted tone when talking about serious subjects. That is disappointing.
