Elizabeth Dole Attacks Opponent as “Godless”

posted by swaldman | 8:19am Thursday October 30, 2008

Wow. Apparently the voice at the end saying “there is no God” is someone attempting to impersonate Dole’s opponent, Kay Hagen.I have to say, as a political matter, if you’re running for Senate in North Carolina, you might want to think twice about attending a Godless Americans PAC fundraiser. (Who knew there were such things?) Seems to me that if candidates are allowed to ask “what did you promise in return” for contributions from the insurance industry or labor unions or anything else, that it’s fair game to ask what views you took that so pleased the Godless Americans. But by then having the Hagan impersonator say “there is no God,” Dole took a basically legitimate ad and drove miles over the line.UPDATE: Dang, I fell for it! Turns out the money wasn’t from the PAC but from a fundraiser organized by a women who had helped create that PAC. Also turns out that Hagan is a Sunday school teacher and an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. By the way, what is “godless money”? Bills with the In God We Trust crossed out? And where can I get myself some of the more God-full greenbacks?

Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Actually, in my dream world, I would like to see a politicians say “my God is no more your business than your God is mine”. Additionally, I want to hear a politicans say that their records stands as evidence for who they are.
Instead we have politicians trying to out-God and out-the-right-kind-of-Christian each other, even if such claims are more superficial than anything, because unfortunately American voters prefer style over substance.

I thought GOD was a Wall Street Acronam for “Greed on Demand” and the GOP stood for “Greed, Oil & Power”.
As the old song says, “You shall know them by their works”, not by their words. Early Christians “Shared the wealth” and did not see it as ungodly. The zealots of the GOP are harlots of money and will use any tactic to scare people to for for them.
It is just another example of the ends justifying the means attitude of politics and has never been right.

Im tired of the GOP and there judgementalistic attitudes.
Im tired of the scare tactics and their self-righteous behavior.
I think it shows the amount of desperateness on their part.
Im seeing Obama signs in the yards of my neighbors when it was
once a Republican neighborhood. I think people are tired and
ready for a new face with a fresh idea.
God Bless our planet and all people-not just America.
We are ready for a new world and someone with a more caring attitude.
It is NOT John McCain!!!!

As a political moderate who has gotten fed up with the Democratic Party, I registered Republican in 2004 (and voted for Kerry, BTW) but the dirty, hate-filled, race and hate and fear based methods of Republican campaigning guarantee that I’m changing to an Independent after I vote for Obama-Biden in this election.
Colin Powell was exactly right. The Republican Party is going to need to change its name, as its base becomes more and more narrow to something more in line with its methods. No need to say what name would suit it best.

I hope that one day it comes that not believing in God would increase the likelihood that one would win political elections. Although I don’t want to get into the issue now, it is very likely that there are no Gods. And, at least for the vast majority of people, not believing in God doesn’t make it harder for one to be a good political leader. Michelle Bachelet and Francois Mitterand are two examples. Nearly everyone in my family is an atheist, and all of them would be good political leaders.

Interesting that not a single commenter actually comments on the fact that this was an Elizabeth Dole ad, someone running fr god’s Own Party. It’s pretty much as hateful, not to mention untruthful, as any of the Obama-is-a-Muslim (or Obama-is-a-terrorist, or Obama-is-a-Marxist) lies.
Isn’t bearing false witness a sin anmore?
“we have politicians trying to out-God and out-the-right-kind-of-Christian each other”
I said months ago, and have repeated ad nuseam, the reminder that there isn’t supposed to be any religious test to hold public office in America.
Maybe next election, we could REQUIRE all candidates to be atheists. We could hardly do any worse than we have under the pastor-in-chief America has now. And, my suggestion has the added bonus that it would disqualify Hucklebee, so the Constitution would stil be safe, too.
