Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety.
But mostly deep, deep gratitude.
How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

My Big News
Dear Readers,
This is the most difficult (and surreal) post I've had to write. I'm leaving Beliefnet, the company I co-founded in 1999.
In mid November, I'll be stepping down as President and Editor in Chief to lead a project on the future of the media for the Federal Communications Commission, the

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Any hate crime is a terrible thing. Nobody should be verbally or physically attacked for being who they are.
The fact that Americans are attacked twice as often for being gay as are people for their Christianity is scary.
Perhaps it is time for the conservative Christians to rethink their position towards us.
Scientific progress has shown clearly that homosexuality is not a choice; every serious medical and psychiatric body rejected the concept of mental or physical illness many decades ago.
Surely, there are passages in the Bible which can be read to reject homosexuality. There are also passages, in the New Testament, which argue that judgment is the Lord’s purview, to his children is left justice.
Christianity has been perverted to discriminate against black people, women, the poor, the mentally ill…a long list. Today, in America, we are past (mostly past) such perversions of the Bible.
It’s time for conservative Christians to accept that they have not been able to, nor ever will they be able to stop some people from loving others of their own sex. Refusing us the stability of government sanction, turning us out of our own homes as youth, casting us out of our families, and, sadly, physical attacks on us have not won one soul Just the opposite.
Conservative Christians have a right to their own beliefs, certainly. But the hatred and spite behind the position of many has done neither our religion nor the country any good.

Wouldn’t it be nice if indeed some folks HAVE to “hate” someone because of their faith, couldn’t they pick another religion besides Judaism? For centuries if things went wrong in a country, the blame was put on the Jews. Time for another group to be wrongly blamed. Actually, it would really be nice if there was no crimes, committed against people because of their faith or lack of faith. I can dream.
In a totally ideal and unrealistic world … there would be no hate, wars or crimes …
