Jeremiah Cummings Accuses Religulous of Deception

posted by swaldman | 10:35am Monday October 20, 2008

Those of you who have seen Religulous know that one of the most mocked characters is Rev. Jeremiah Cummings, who is depicted as a greedy huckster who ignores Christ’s teaching about poverty, and enriches himself at the expense of his congregation. I got a few emails from Cummings recently, and he claims that Bill Maher and the Religuous producers took things grotesquely out of context and even edited the interview to make it seem like he said things he never actually said.
First, he said that, as with others we’ve contacted, Maher concealed the real purpose of the film, implying it was a documentary for public TV:

“It was the co-producer a woman( at least she said she was) who called from California who had told me that someone from their staff had seen me on TBN and they wanted me to be in a documentary about my faith and it was to be seen on PBS. There was no mentioning of Bill Maher at all nor a movie. I did not know who he was but had seen him while flipping the TV remote. But I never watched his program.”

Cummings said he scheduled the interview in Raleigh, N.C. “Once I was miked I looked to my right and there sat Bill Maher.”
Bill Maher, on Larry King live, denied that they claimed it was a PBS documentary (“that’s a flat out lie”) but conceded that he didn’t inform interviewees of his role. “What we didn’t tell people is that it was me doing the Interview. They didn’t ask. We didn’t feel an obligation to tell them. 60 minutes does the same kind of thing. Nobody ever makes anything about that. And they could have gotten up and left. What they hate is that it’s doing well.”)
The Religulous segment begins with Cummings telling Maher to call him doctor, and then flashing on the screen “He’s not a doctor.” Cummings states to me:

“I would have never told Bill Maher to call me Doctor, I would have said you can call me Jeremiah or Pastor Cummings.”

Cummings believes the film was edited to make it sound like he said “doctor.”
Larry Charles, the film’s director responds to this charge in an email to Beliefnet:

“Jeremiah Cummings is a blatant charlatan. He calls himself a doctor repeatedly including clearly on his website but as we point out in the movie not only isn’t he a doctor but he possesses no degree of any kind! He preaches a gospel of prosperity but the only one seeming to prosper is him.”

In the film, Maher speaks about Cummings’ expensive suit and lizard shoes. Cummings says the suit cost him $200 and the shoes $175, three years ago.
Cummings says that the filmmakers inserted some of Maher’s comments and jokes after the fact to make it look like they were part of the original discussion:

“Many of the responses to what I said were not done on the set but place din the conversation later. Like when I said, ‘the people like for their leaders to live well.’ And Bill responds ‘that’s what pimps say about their women.’ He never said that in front of me. I am made to appear to be some money hungry preacher which is the typical stereotype of black preachers.”

Larry Charles did not offer a response on that point.
The film depicts Cummings as unfamiliar with or embarrassed by the passage in which Jesus says “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”(Matthew 19) Cummings says,

“The scripture and the stuttering of the scripture was totally edited and manipulated because in reality I never quoted that scripture. It would have not gone with the conversation that Jesus was against being rich. Somehow my voice was cloned and edited to make me look stupid.”

The film’s director denied editing Cummings words to impugn him. Charles wrote:

“He stumbled and stammered when he voluntarily tried to quote the famous biblical verse, ‘it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven’. We didn’t make him screw that up. He did it all himself. And he was offering the quote to prove that god blesses the rich which is precisely the opposite of what the quote means! Why are we even countenancing his feeble complaints.”

On Larry King, Maher responded to the general charge that the movie was deceptive:
“Religion accusing me of deception? Religion–the greatest scam in the history of world, selling the invisible product for thousands of years accusing us of deception? That takes the cake. I’ve always been upfront about how we did this movie.”

B’net is almost singlehandedly promoting “Religulous” with articles like this one. If people really wanted the film to go away they would ignore it – this works for many of the other Hollywood releases. But by constantly commenting and critiquing Maher and Charles and the film, you are granting it the sort of cache they so richly want. I like the film simply because it does skewer some of the more outragous, inconsistent, and outright foolish notions of religion. So I guess I offer you my blessing and encouragment, you are providing more and better advertsining than Maher et. al. could ever hope to afford.

Maher is certainly a muckraker, and I can see why some of the people he interviewed felt they were trapped into looking foolish. But, if they didn’t want the publicity, perhaps they shouldn’t have agreed to be interviewed on camera. It’s not a great film by any means, but I think Maher is performing an important public service by embarrassing the hucksters who say they are doing God’s work. Cummings appears to fall into this category.

I have been a fan of Bill Maher for a long time. I admire his brilliance as a comedian and as a commentator on social/political issues. I also share some of his distaste for literalism re: the Bible and doctrine.
Problem: Though I haven’t seen his film “Religilous” I have watched trailers and have been really disappointed by his approach to religion. I do intend to see the film, however, and try to give it a fair analysis. And, if the following comments are proven wrong, I’ll apologize. But for now…
He seems to be posing as a seeker, perhaps even getting his way into gaining interviews with people who purport to be religious. But, alas, his main purpose seems to be to ridicule religion itself by concentrating on those who may misrepresent religion.
This may make for hilarity, but does not fairly explore what it is that religion has affected society. There are many religionists who (if Bill has an open mind) that might not convert him, but give him a more comprehensive picture of what the Bible and Faith might mean to a Christian.
I would hope– naively, I suppose–that Bill would make a film that is fair and balanced. (It could be funny!) Otherwise, he seems like a fundamentalist, using only partial evidence to represent his whole point of view. Or maybe that’s all a fun guy can do. But I can’t see any integrity in muckraking for mere effect. Too much danger of being accused of high egotism.

Here we have Bill Maher and Larry Charles admit on CNN that they lied to get people into their movie. How can we believe anything they say. If Charles would not respond to Cummings saying that they inserted things into the movie that was not said in front of him on the set. Then who can say what else they did to make folks look the way they want them to look. And who is the real Charlatan if they (Charles and Maher) are making millions of dollars off of people who are in their movie and they are not paying the ones they lied to, to make their movie.

The only people I can see objecting to this movie are those who cannot back up their own religious beliefs. If you know what you believe and why you believe it is based on facts and not what someone else has told you, then why would you object to Bill Maher’s questions about it? I grew up christian and so I understand how frightening it is to defend a point I don’t fully understand myself. Now I realize that ignorance of the masses does not equal truth. Anyone who’s been in a religon knows that the way these people hemmed and hawed around their answers and talked in circles is the way you’re taught to deal with non-believers. There are certain standard texts you quote and certain answers you give but beyond that we’re not taught to think about religion. I think Maher is right in exposing this fact with his film. I wouldn’t say religion is “bad” like he does, but I do think we’ve gotten lazy in our religous worship. We don’t question our own beliefs, put our facts on the table for closer examination and learn what it is exactly we believe and why. If we did I think we’d find that we all have a lot more in common than we thought.

I have the DVD playing as I am typing. Mahr is a good comedian. I understand that people were never told that he will interview them but I also understand that most religious people would not interview him as they are not happy about any interviewer that they know is smart and can get them tongue-tied.
The part about Dr. or Not. The edit on the movie and the shooting is done very poorly. While he is walking toward Cummings his back is to us and we cannot see Cummings’ mouth. It is very simple to believe that he did not say that he should be doctor. But when I read in the above article “Like when I said, ‘the people like for their leaders to live well.’ And Bill responds ‘that’s what pimps say about their women.’ He never said that in front of me.” I slowed down the DVD to frame rate and clearly his face gets a reaction as the word pimp is passing. Is it possible that Mahr is cut and pasted into this? Sure it is as the background is a curtain so easy to splice but the reaction is not that easy to edit in.
However, Cummings says, “”The scripture and the stuttering of the scripture was totally edited and manipulated because in reality I never quoted that scripture.” That part you can see his mouth correctly moving and saying those words. That makes him a liar.
Cummings also says above “Somehow my voice was cloned and edited to make me look stupid.” I seriously do not see anything that makes me to believe Mahr and his producers hired ILM or someone in those calibers to create a cloned 3D model of Cummings talking and so seamlessly inserting in a background as well as creating the words in his voice.
All that said no religion is able to call him deceiving in interviewing them. If they have such faith and strong believe then they should be able to clearly say it. As a few of them said very firmly that they just believe and one man said it firmly he is not staying to hear question.
Bill Mahr never promoted people to read the religious books or ask them if they have read it. It seems he is assuming people have read their books. Most people are only aware of the scripture as they are told. Most people have never read ALL of their religious books. I am not sure why puts the demographics of blacks in US at 12.2 because as of 2006 census it is 13.4%.
I would say that the movie is a bit too MTV style cut up clips into each other. Mahr and the producers should have seen it coming that when you cut up a person’s interview then it creates doubts.
He also did laugh too much at people whom do not share his ideas. Clearly, he could have kept it less comedy and more showing the facts about religion, its connection to extraction of wealth from people, and its use for manipulation of people in the name of religion to kill others. Some of his questions were very not thought through. Asking someone why not kill himself or herself to get close to god looks like he has never heard that in that person’s belief suicide is forbidden. He got lucky the person was less intelligent and aware of his own religion to answer him.

Of course this show was edited in some ways, it’s a movie that was made to appeal to a certain group of people. Almost everything has been produced or changed to appeal to different groups of people, why do you think there are so many different versions of the Bible? The purpose of the movie is to question, just like the Matrix and others like the sort. You should always be asking questions, especially if you’re willing to serve something. Where Cummings is accused of asking to be called Dr. was most likely edited / planted / inserted. I base this on the way the footage is assembled (you cannot see Cummings face at the instant he is accused of saying call me Dr.), and Larry Charles doesn’t seem to refute this. Maybe Charles and Maher thought it was okay because of the Dr.s website. But what do you critics think about how Bill Maher handled the Scientology thing in London? “Get an e-Meter”, “Audit yourself”….and what about the footage where Cummings says that guy should turn his passion for suicide over a failed romantic relationship toward God, and then a speeding van/truck is shown exploding presumably by some suicidal religious fanatic. That was appropriate. What about the wacky Mormons? I don’t much like Maher’s politics and his hatred of the political right, but he and Larry Charles did a good flick here.

It’s not as easy to match tone and ambient sound to ‘insert’ the doctor quote as you might think. A cursory listen might fool most people but it doesn’t take much to expose a fake. I’ve watched and listened to that bit several times and it’s completly smooth. It’s unfortunate that Maher was in front of the camera at the time, but I can’t see them spending the time and effort when Cummings gave them as much other ammunition as he did. He clearly takes Maher’s point about Jesus preaching against the rich and begins to turn it around…’the bible does not preach against being poor.’ This man speaks in front of hundreds of people, but we’re supposed to believe he just got confused?
According to this ABC article he had the opportunity to set the record straight on Real Time but he chose to pursue things finacially. (his words)http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/evangelist-jeremiah-cummings-blames-bill-mahers-religulous-misfortunes/Story?id=8653902&page=1
He also claims that Maher never said the pimp quote while he was there but they’re both clearly in the same shot when that happens. Like most things, Maher takes things too far, but the bottom line is that every religious storyline sounds insane…whether it’s Joseph Smith, L. Ron Hubbard, the Raelians or the Gospels.

While the film is a satirical view on religion; it does make good points as far as some things the religious people said that does not make sense or the original story of Jesus actually being compiled of several other “gods” from ancient civilizations.
Cummings claims he did not tell Maher to call him doctor, yet if you look on youtube videos of his preaching of his own ministries he refers to himself as doctor, and his own books he signs it as Dr Jeremiah Cummings. What I find most, hm, entertaining is that the Christians who comment continue to focus on the wrong thing. It is not about whether or not he asked Maher to call him doctor, since at the time his face was covered and so who knows. But the FACT that he refers to himself as doctor and has not gotten any degrees or any honorary doctorates.
I see one person said why should he prove to anyone who he is? it is not just him, any one who claims to be a “Dr.” Especially when you are in the public eye should be ready to prove what they claim to be true otherwise they are simply liars and in his case a charlatan.
He claims Bill Maher did not say the pimp statement in front of him, but like the typical charlatan he does not follow the words in which he preaches. He says that Jesus did not hate rich people, Jesus was quite clear of his distrust of the rich man. But even without the pimp statement Cummings hung himself by saying people want their leaders to prosper, as well as his fine suits, as well as saying how much he love his gold etc.,
Okay final thought, Bill Maher is NOT AN ATHEIST, he does not claim to KNOW a god does not exist, he takes the claim of not knowing either way. Even in the film he said he is pushing “skepticism” and that the other guys are pushing certainty, that he is pushing doubt.
I also see people commenting saying, picking on the black man, as a black man I saw nothing picking at him on. If anything or anyone on there made a bigger mockery of himself it was that preacher who claimed to be Jesus himself…. That is a lot worst than saying you like gold, asking to be called doctor and misquoting the bible.
Other people commenting speaks of him being against Christianity, and the movie is anti-christian. If any one seem the film they would see if anything he is against the hypocrisy of the church, but when it came to the common man, he said thanks for being “Christ like and not just Christians”. I found this line quite honest in the sense of there being a ton of hypocrisy in the church and religion in general.
While I am an Atheist, and do not believe in a god, I also have many religious friends who can see the many hypocrisy in churches, if we look at Catholicism, you are suppose to live humbly and yet your leaders live in an giant castle, gets millions and millions in donations, wear jewels worth more than many peoples salary etc. If we look at Christianity, the same can be said, though both have a high intolerance for other beliefs, lifestyles and things of that nature, even though Jesus never said one word about homosexuality. Leviticus weren’t the words of Christ. Islam and Judaism have many common things in common yet as with most faiths they are based on the words of man.
So many faiths they all cannot be correct since they all teach different things.
As I have said while I am an Atheist, I have no problem with religious people as long as they do not preach hypocrisy. Do not preach mercy then condemn, do not preach forgiveness and then punish. Do not say love thy neighbor and then demonize any who does not agree with your relative subjective views on life. Do not preach the accepting of different views, and then call those views lost because they do not believe what you do.
It is all hypocrisy; while as I said there are some religious people whom are quite accepting of others. As with many things in life, it is a subjective conundrum, it is only true as the words are followed, but when the words are followed it can no longer be true.

He and his “wife” arrived in Raleigh with furs, houses and cars—brand new Mercedes Benz.He stated he didn’t want any money from the church but he collected those offerings and handled the “deposits” himself.
He also claimed a young woman to be his wife, meanwhile his real wife and children were in Florida. When all of that came to light he then put out a statement saying that the woman he claimed was his wife was a “prophetess” who had “tricked” him by telling him to leave his wife and chldren. Now,God has restored his marriage.
Meanwhile, the woman he claimed to be his wife, the “prophetess” was left with her life in ruins: broke, busted, mentally distraught and humiliated. I pray that she is doing well.
In reference to the Bill Maher interview, he made announcements at his “church” by bragging that his good friend, Bill Maher, was coming to interview him. He also asked the congregation to come out support him.
All of the material he printed at that time carried the title of “Dr.” Back then he would never identify what his doctorate was in or what school he attended—red flag. A person that holds an earned doctorate degree never has an issue with identifying his or her credentials. People of faith must make sure that their faith and allegiance is in God and not the leadership—that is the only preventive tool against blindness.

I remember Cummings from Southwestern Christian College. He went under the name Jerry Cummings. It amazes me that Black Folks work to destroy their own. I know Bill Maher is a lunatic and hates religion and so do I. But Cummings has done a lot to win former terroists to the church. To be characterized as a husler is totally not him. Women were always after him even if he was married. I spell a rat and its not Cummings some upset woman in the background.

This guy (cummings) is a nutball, preying on people who are looking for guidance, and using their prayers as a form for profit. Want to talk about the snake in the garden of eden, come on people, read your bibles, and don’t just be educated in the religious realm. I am masters educated in the environmental science realm, would I go around preaching that I am a Priest, no, I don’t have the skills, education or experience to claim that, and anybody who publicly states that they are one thing but there not and lie to mass public should be ashamed and locked up. I am a confirmed catholic, and am not an atheist, but give me a brake, maher exposes the truth, and people don’t want to hear the truth, anybody who objects to this film needs to get a reality check, get educated, and open your mind.

This film had nothing to do with Cummings reputation. Cummings sued Sony Music in 2004 and won. And this film with him in it was their payback for him taking their money from them. Sony Music and Lions Gate are all the same family with Bill Maer and Larry Charles, Thats what ruining him was all about. The Truth will Free Anybody

Well?? I regards to Bill Mahers claim, that Min. Cummings refers himself to a “Doctor”..
..is incorrect! It was the interviewing host who does this repeatedly,(which Min. Cummings should’ve corrected the host, it would have been a good idea too do so!).

Mr. Bill doesn’t exactly have the best reputation either! It is clear too that this attack whether or not believes this … he is allowing himself to be used by Satan to deceive, mislead attack a man of GOD; simply because of his past road of which was travel to arrive at the place GOD has him!

Concealing, and not making clear one’s intent is still lying and thus deception!
God said, “all liers shall have their place in the lake of fire which burneth-(meaning a continual burn!) with brimstone!”

You’re not God and neither are you, GODs assistant! “What God has called clean; callest not thou it; unclean!”

Reconsider how you go about your affairs Mr Maher! Approach you work ethics more honestly! God warns against putting your hands or your mouth falsely on his people!

Mankind really needs too open their eyes, -because the hand writing is on the wall!!
You can clearly see it in the weather (seaons).

Jeremiah Cummings keep preaching the Word of GOD; in season, out of season!

I have a lot more too say, but I’m cutting it short! People in positions of commentatorship, Hosting, interviewing etc.- should revisit their work ethics cause, America … is not dumb!

You’re only fooling yourselves!
(not everyone in the media!). You don’t have control over our minds, as you suppose!

Satan’s roll is too falsely accuse Gods elect sake! How? Deception, lying, killing or maiming! Judist ( one of the twelve!)- allowed Satan to enter into him and use him too betray Jesus! Thus he burst asunder (he emploded from within! His intestines burst).

“He found his portion in hell!”
Jeremiah didn’t even know Mr. Bill, why set out too attack someone??” God said, “a viper bites without enchantment!”

Clearly this is a mindless non-provoking attack against a man trying too share with the world what thus saith, the Lord!

People of the media! Whom will you allow too use you? “Will it be satan, or Will it be GOD!???”

Sincerely, D Carter
