Rick Warren has just released this statement about being invited to give the invocation at the inauguration:
"I commend President-elect Obama for his courage to willingly take enormous heat from his base by inviting someone like me, with whom he doesn't agree on every issue, to offer the Invocation at his historic Inaugural ceremony.Hopefully individuals passionately expressing opinions from the left and the right will recognize that both of us have shown a commitment to model civility in America.
The Bible admonishes us to pray for our leaders. I am honored by this opportunity to pray God's blessing on the office of the President and its current and future inhabitant, asking the Lord to provide wisdom to America's leaders during this critical time in our nation's history."

Years ago in a place called America the difference of religious opinions would have politely been in the background and Rick Warren would have just thanked the President Elect for being invited. This country is so different than the country I was raised in. I wish Obama all the best he'll need God's help for sure to get past all the bitterness, cruelty that has been spred by the Far Right, and their religious superiority over everyone's religion or no religion, and everyone's personal business.
Civil rights for LGBT people and our equality in God's eyes are not "not issues," not in the sense of, say, reproductive choice, where people of good faith may disagree. We are past that. We know the science of sexual orientation. We know that homosexuality is neither a moral failing nor a behavioral choice. We know that religious tradition and Biblical interpretation are subject to change, as they did, ultimately, on the question of slavery. The only remaining question is whether people choose to embrace an inclusive gospel, or an exclusive one. The only remaining "issue" is bigotry, and on this issue there are indeed two sides -- right and wrong. Rev. Warren, and President-elect Obama, have chosen the wrong side.
Civility"??? That's a joke right?
Since when is lieing and casting false aspersions against some people 'civil' let alone "Christian"?
