Was It Ethical For Bernard Madoff’s Kids To Turn Him In?

posted by swaldman | 2:10pm Friday December 19, 2008

Bernard Madoff, alleged master of the $50 billion ponzi scheme, was turned in by his own sons, according to the Wall Street Journal.
As Madoff is a major Jewish philanthropist, I wondered what Jewish tradition says about turning in papa, especially given the commandment to honor your parents.
Rabbi David Wolpe of Temple Sinai in L.A., author of Why Faith Matters, explained:

“In Jewish law you are NOT obligated to honor parents above God. If your parents ask you to violate God’s law, you are to refuse. While there are community sensitivities about being a ‘moser’ — an informer– that is when the government is tyrannical and/or anti-semitic, which obviously does not apply here.”

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act
